Hemmis (University of Southern Mississippi) Published on H-War (March, 2016) Commissioned by Margaret Sankey A Chance at Freedom In The Slaves’ Gamble, Gene Allen Smith tackles a seemingly simple question in early American history: “why did some free blacks and slaves side with the United States during the War of 1812, and why did others join the British, the Spanish, the Native American tribes, or maroon communities?” (p. xi). Smith discovers a complex and multifaceted answer. Tracing the service of many African American men from colonial times through the War of 1812, the author finds that moments of international conflict gave free and enslaved black men a chance at freedom if they chose wisely. Smith opens the book with the story of HMS Leopard stopping USS Chesapeake in 1807. He explains that three of the four sailors whom the British captured were black men claiming to be Americans. The Chesapeake-Leopard affair seemingly had little to do with race, but Smith argues that race was “central ... to the history of the subsequent War of 1812” (p. 2). War gave African American men an opportunity to choose their own futures; during several flash points in history, Smith demonstrates, free and enslaved blacks had a brief chance to determine their own destiny. -

Benedict Department of History Graduate Program Professor Kevin Boyle ABSTRACT This work explores how German immigrants influenced the reshaping of American citizenship following the Civil War and emancipation. It takes a new approach to old questions: How did African American men achieve citizenship rights under the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments? Why were those rights only inconsistently protected for over a century? German Americans had a distinctive effect on the outcome of Reconstruction because they contributed a significant number of votes to the ruling Republican Party, they remained sensitive to European events, and most of all, they were acutely conscious of their own status as new American citizens. Drawing on the rich yet largely untapped supply of German-language periodicals and correspondence in Missouri, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., I recover the debate over citizenship within the German-American public sphere and evaluate its national ramifications. Partisan, religious, and class differences colored how immigrants approached African American rights. Yet for all the divisions among German Americans, their collective response to the Revolutions of 1848 and the Franco-Prussian War and German unification in 1870 and 1871 left its mark on the opportunities and disappointments of Reconstruction. -

Among the acquisitions is the 25th United States Colored Infantry Regiment, Company H Descriptive Book, Mss. 5374, which contains lists and registers of commissioned officers, non- commissioned officers, men transferred, men discharged, deaths, and deserters and a descriptive roll of Company H. The roll lists names, physical characteristics (including complexion), birthplace, occupation, enlistment information, and general remarks about company soldiers. Going through the book, one can see where soldiers mustered in as they traveled from Pennsylvania through the Deep South, gaining recruits primarily in Alabama. The 25th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment was organized and trained near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in January 1864 under the command of colonel Gustavus A. Scroggs. The regiment served mainly in Louisiana and Florida and was mustered out of service in December 1865. This book will be of great use for families performing genealogical research and those studying African American regiments during the war. -

Cannon, Ph.D. 1st Break 9:55 – 10:10 nd 2 Break 11:00 -11:05 Course Title: Faith and Justice in Freedom Narratives: Lessons in Ethics from the Slave Quarters Course Description: This course is an interdisciplinary inquiry into the moral issues related to enslaved Africans who worked as chattel property in the economies of North America. We will examine theological expressions of faith and ethical issues of justice confronting the church community from the time of slavocracy to the present, especially how religion both empowered and disenfranchised African Americans in the struggle to actualize sacred embodiment. Objectives: a) to examine theological themes and contemporary ethical issues in the freedom narratives of enslaved African Americans; b) to interrogate moral agency in a variety of antebellum contexts regarding “how are we to live and for what;” c) to think creatively about the ways people of faith understand character, consequences, and obligations in relations to “a moral universe encompassing the whole community of life;” d) to become knowledgeable of literature in the field; e) to demonstrate facility in the skills of argumentation in order to become conversant with theological language so that members of contemporary confessing communities can live as authentic disciples in relation to the church’s mission and the meaning of the Gospel. Recent works include Sven Beckert’s Empire of Cotton , Walter Johnson’s River of Dark Dreams , and Edward Baptist’s The Half Has Never Been Told . All three authors mishandle historical evidence and mis-characterize important events in ways that affect their major interpretations on the nature of slavery, the workings of plantations, the importance of cotton and slavery in the broader economy, and the sources of the Industrial Revolution and world development. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction Slavery remains a topic of keen interest, for good reasons. In the United States, slavery left a legacy of misery, inequality, and troubled race relations. Slavery and the war that ended it led to an impoverished American South. 1 It was in this backward, largely rural setting, that freed men and women, lacking education and capital, and often surrounded by hostile whites, had to start new lives. For too long there was a general acquiescence to a southern revisionist version of slavery, the causes of the Civil War, and the subsequent southern white supremacy governments and policies. -

Objective Students will learn what happened during the War of 1812 and its impact on the United States. Students will understand the role Ohio played in the War of 1812. Research The War of 1812 was fought between the United States, Great Britain, Statement and their respective allies, from June 1812 to February 1815. Neither side ever gained a significant advantage and the war resulted in a return to the status quo. Trail of Souls at Middleham and St. Peters: Uncovering the History of Slavery in Southern Calvert County About the Trail of Souls Project The 2009 General Convention of the Episcopal Church called on each diocese to gather information about the history of slavery, segregation and discrimination. Diocese of Maryland Bishop Eugene Taylor Sutton invited all of the parishes in the Diocese to engage in a study of their history of slavery and its legacies, in particular those with a history going back to the period of slavery (and parishes with predominantly black congregations). Participating parishes were to be involved with the Bishop and Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts Schori in a Day of Repentance and Reconciliation: Remembering the Past, Celebrating Accomplishments, Visioning the Future, scheduled for November 1, 2014. Together with over twenty other parishes, the Middleham and St. Peter's vestry responded positively to the Bishop's invitation. A committee was formed in January 2014 which has been working on the project ever since. The committee includes the following parishioners: Hugh Davies Diane Davies Rev. David Showers Louise Smith Dale Yoe Our intent in sharing this history is to: More fully inform ourselves and the broader community about the extent and nature of slavery in Calvert County and at Middleham Chapel, Acknowledge the contributions of those slaves, and Express our contrition for the impact of slavery on our fellow human beings. When the parish celebrated its 325th anniversary in 2009, a comprehensive history of the chapels was written, including a focus on how the parish related to the African American population in our area, so the committee had some basis to build on.
