Message from AABDC I wish to extend my congratulations to the recipients of the 2008 "Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business" award and the "Pinnacle Award" for their accomplishments and contributions to help power the engine of the economy. I also want to express my grati- tude to our corporate sponsors and many individuals for their unfailing support to make this event possible. Especially in this uncertain economic climate,Asian American entrepreneurship has become synonymous with resource for community development and economic revitaliza- tion in our neighborhoods.Through ingenuity, entrepreneur drive and sheer hard work, Asian Americans have not only successfully created numerous ethnically based economies throughout the country, but also have established themselves in a number of important John Wang industries. President On the global scale,Asian American executives with their multicultural background and entrepreneurial talents are key to helping American corporations stay competitive in the AABDC world market. Global corporations can leverage their Asian American professionals within their ranks to enhance business in Asia and broaden its own appeal as global leader. Since the inception of this project in 2001,AABDC has dedicated its efforts to promote and strengthen the voice and role of Asian Americans in the mainstream marketplace, and to highlight their achievements and contributions to the general economy.Tonight's hon- orees represent a microcosm of the best of Asian American entrepreneurship with a pool of diverse and multi-talented individuals engaged in a wide range of business interests.The depth and breadth of their business undertakings clearly demonstrate that Asian Americans are an integral part of the larger economy. I am grateful for the participation and presence of this group of outstanding individuals in tonight's event. Sincerely yours John Wang President,AABDC Keynote Speaker Son of a public school teacher, born and raised in Brooklyn, and now a Queens resident,Anthony Weiner knows the challenges most families face, and has worked hard to make sure that all New Yorkers get their chance at a better life. In his years in the City Council,Weiner has gained a reputation as a thoughtful fighter for New York's neighborhoods. He initiated programs to tackle quality of life concerns, and spearheaded development plans for his- toric Sheepshead Bay that led to a revival of the area.And when super- Anthony D. Weiner markets began leaving the neighborhood,Weiner worked night and day to Congressman reverse the trend. He also won much recognition for his efforts as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Public Housing, where on behalf of New York's most underserved and underrepresented citizens, he fought to increase federal funding for Public Housing, and on numerous occasions succeeded on a city-wide level in making public housing safer. Elected to congress in 1998,Weiner became a congressman for the dis- trict that includes Brooklyn and Queens. He currently sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has the largest jurisdiction in the U.S. House; overseeing telecommunications, public health, air quality and envi- ronmental protection, the nation’s energy policy, and interstate and foreign commerce. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee and as a part of the Democratic leadership team. Weiner's efforts have brought millions of dollars home to New York City to restore our city's parks and beaches, to improve the collection of DNA to solve crimes against women, to fund programs for the developmentally disabled, to fund for additional police officers, to improve pedestrian safe- ty, to bring ferry transportation to more New Yorkers, and to even clean graffiti. Mistress of Ceremonies Cindy Hsu is an Emmy Award winning anchor and reporter who has been at CBS 2 News in New York City since 1993. Ms. Hsu's work at CBS 2 has been recognized with numerous awards. Most recently, her personal adoption story, "Bringing Rosie Home," was nominated for an Emmy Award and won the New York AP Broadcasters Award for Best Feature. She received Emmy Awards for Outstanding Single Hard News Story for "Smuggled from China," which exposed the horrific plights of Chinese refugees from the Golden Venture ship, and for Cindy Hsu her live coverage of the snowstorm of 1994.American Women in Radio News Anchor and Television honored her with the Golden Apple Award, and she also received the Friends of Adoption Award from the Adoptive Parents WCBS-TV Committee. Prior to joining WCBS-TV, Ms. Hsu worked as a reporter and anchor at WFRV-TV in Green Bay,Wisconsin, and for WTOV-TV in Steubenville, Ohio. She began her broadcasting career as an associate producer for WTVR-TV in Richmond,Virginia. Ms. Hsu spends much of her off-duty time performing community work and is strongly involved with the Asian-American community. She was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Coast Guard family that moved every two to four years. She graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in communi- cation studies and lives in New York City with her daughter. Pinnacle Award Michael Chen is the President and CEO of Media, Communications, and Entertainment, GE Commercial Finance and is a Vice President and Officer of GE. Mr. Chen has primary responsibility for overseeing GE's debt and equity financing activities to the media, communications and entertainment sectors and the technologies that enable them. In addition, he heads up GE's Asian-Pacific American Forum, a group that has close to 10,000 peo- ple in the US. Mr. Chen was named as one of the nation's top sales and customer relationship individuals in the book 'Secrets of Great Rainmakers' by best-selling author Jeffrey Fox. Michael Chen President and CEO of Mr. Chen started his career in 1985 as a financial analyst for IBM.After Media, several management positions in sales, finance, and marketing for IBM, he Communications, and was promoted in 1992 to head up Risk Management for IBM Credit Entertainment Corporation's mid-market leasing business. In 1994, he left IBM to join GE as Vice President of Risk Management for GE Capital Aviation Services GE Commercial Finance (GECAS).After three years he was named Senior Vice President, Marketing Operations for GECAS. In 1999, he was named Senior Vice President and Regional Mgr, North America for GECAS. In 2002, he was named a Vice President and Officer of GE Capital Corporation, and in 2005, he assumed the position of general manager for Global Airports and U.S.Aviation, GECAS. Mr. Chen was named to his current position in December 2006. Mr. Chen received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Rochester University in 1983 and an MBA in finance from the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University in 1985. Mr. Chen also serves on the Board of Directors for Norwalk Community College and Give Me an Answer, a local community organization focused on helping young adults answer the tough questions in life. Patricia Berberabe and her sisters, along with their husbands, established the Phil-Am Food Mart, Inc. in 1973 to cater to the growing Filipino popu- lation in Jersey City, NJ. Eventually the store was divided into Phil-Am Merchandising, Casa Victoria,and Phil-Am Trading, Inc. - the wholesale and import division owned by Ms. Berberabe and her sister, Florence. Phil-Am Trading distribute to more than 200 retail stores and restaurants up and down the east coast, with gross annual sales of about $5 million. Ms. Berberabe is an author of two books, actively participates in and sup- ports community activities, and has received numerous awards, the most recent being the 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the Pan American Concerned Citizen Action League, the 2005 Volunteer Award Pat Berberabe for the Year from the State of NJ General Assembly, the 2005 President Entrepreneur Award from the Knights of Rizal and the 2005 Entrepreneur Award for the Year. Phil-Am Trading, Inc. Ms. Berberabe received her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Santo Tomas,the Philippines. Neeta Bhasin is the President/CEO of ASB Communications, a full service multicultural communications agency dedicated to the ethnic markets, especially the South Asian (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) and Middle Eastern markets, in North America. Ms. Bhasin not only knows the areas of community concentration but also possesses insight on the psychology of this vibrant, affluent, evolved and phenomenally growing ethnic group in the USA.ASB has more than 100 consultants and executives nationwide. Ms. Bhasin hosts a live show on ITV, a New York/New Jersey channel dedi- cated to the South Asian diasporas. She has been invited as a guest lectur- Neeta Bhasin er at NYU, St. John's University and many other prestigious public forums CEO/President to share her insights of the South Asian market in the US. She was also recognized and awarded by the Census Board for her contribution in ASB Communications making Census 2000 a success. Ms. Bhasin was commended by New York City for her outstanding service to the South Asian community. Michelle L. Bunting is the President of Horizon Pediatric Systems, Inc., the largest pediatric medical daycare in New Jersey, which she co-formed in 2003. Mrs. Bunting manages the operations and administration of a team of over 50 healthcare staff and consultants who operate Mercer County Children's Medical Daycare, which is not only the first, but also the largest pediatric medical daycare facility in the State of New Jersey, providing comprehensive health care, early childhood education, and social services under one roof.
