TEACHING EXPERIENCE (Teaching Portfolio)

Dr. Stewart's experience in teaching has been in a variety of settings within and apart from the School of Public Health. Most of his experience has occurred in the process of training and supervising a large number of students of biostatistics who have worked with Dr. Stewart on collaborative bio-medical research projects as graduate research assistants (GRAs). This activity has involved thousands of hours of direct, practical training and instruction in statistical methods, research database management, statistical computing, consulting skills, and scientific writing. In addition, Dr. Stewart has directed the thesis research of seven students of biostatistics (BIOS 393 and BIOS 394) and has served as an active member of more that 30 other thesis committees. Dr. Stewart has also supervised the required practical consulting experiences (BIOS 242) of 15 students. In addition to these one-to-one teaching experiences, Dr. Stewart has also provided approximately 355 credit hours of instruction in the classroom setting. (credit hours per student × number of students.) Dr. Stewart has also provided tutorials and seminars to groups and clients in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Public Health and to other groups apart from the UNC system. Dr. Stewart maintains a teaching portfolio that is available upon request. It addresses the following three components of his experience in teaching. 1) The Process: How, When, and Where One Teaches 2) The Content: Peer Review of What One Teaches 3) The Outcomes: The Effects of Teaching on the Student

COMPUTER SOFTWARE

1980 LINMOD/GCMPACK: a module for analysis of Dose-Response Curves and Growth Curves: The current version of the LINMOD software system for the analysis of univariate and multivariate data by general linear models was provided by Keith Muller and was initially developed by R.W. Helms, J.D. Hosking, and D.H. Christiansen with later assistance by K. E. Muller and P. W. Stewart. LINMOD is a software system for the analysis of univariate data by general linear models., The LINMOD system originally included 4,500 statements in the SAS / PROC MATRIX language. In 1996 and again in 1997 K.E.Muller translated the code to SAS / PROC IML language and made needed revisions. Drs. Stewart and Muller have used LINMOD in BIOS263 and BIOS163 for instruction and discovery. The GCMPACK module includes approximately 3000 SAS statements. The LINMOD system (including GCMPACK) is in use in several of the National Institutes of Health, at several pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, and universities in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, and Chile. Documentation is in the following: -- Stewart and Helms (1979-a) (Given above) -- Stewart and Helms (1979-b) (Given above) -- Christiansen, Hosking, Helms, and Bourassa (1979)

September 18, 2009 Page 30

-- Christiansen, Hosking, Helms, and Muller (1979) -- Helms, Christiansen (1979) -- Hosking, Christiansen, Helms (1979)

1990 CPUSERVER: system software allowing users on a local area network to share remote batch processors. SAS programs and other programs enter a queue and run in batch mode. SAS programs are placed in the queue by simply copying the program file into the network directory named “q:\”. All results appear with the program file in directory “r:\” when the results are ready for review.

1992 TRACKING.IML: a set of modules for analysis of tracking via mixed-model analysis of growth curves (dose- response) curves. The modules include approximately 1000 statements in the SAS PROC IML language; about half are internal documentation.

1996 LM_MACRO.SAS: a set of modules for longitudinal analysis of multi-dimensional responses. Comprises over 12,000 lines of code.

2000 BIV_EM.SAS: a set of modules for longitudinal analysis of bivariate or trivariate outcomes that are subject to left- censoring; e.g., censored below a lower limit of detection.

2005 IML_CENSAD.SAS: a translation of the CENSAD FORTRAN algorithm for fitting linear mixed-effects models to left censoring longitudinal data. The new code uses SAS / PROC IML.
