Introduction “A real translation is transparent; it does not cover the original, does not block its light, but allows the pure language, as though reinforced by its own medium, to shine upon the original all the more fully. […] It is the task of the translator to release in his own language that pure language which is under the spell of another, to liberate the language imprisoned in a work in his re-creation of that work.” (Walter Benjamin, 1923, 260-1) The essential aspiration of the literary translator is to make a written work of art from a source culture accessible to a target culture, while recognising and remaining true to the work’s semantic and formal implications. This mediation may have various objectives, but generally serves to nurture or enrich the latter culture. Stated like this, literary translation may appear as a highly ambitious and challenging operation, so it should not come as a surprise that several scholars have argued for its impossibility. However, as translation has continually been practised since the Romans, let us assume it is not necessary to abandon the discipline altogether; it is mainly a matter of finding creative solutions to some particular sites of indeterminacy, which will be identified as ‘translation strategies’. For the dramatic genre, which is central to the present study, the discipline may become somewhat more complicated. The medium is charged with a performative aspect, which means that, besides being read, the text is meant to be conveyed orally, and thus transcends the audience of remote, delayed readers to that of immediate, present onlookers. This inevitably bears far- reaching consequences for the adopted translation strategies. One specific

Avelghem (1946) staat hierbij centraal. Het is het relaas van Streuvels' jaren in Avelgem, waar hij in het ouderlijke huis woont tot hij in 1905 zijn intrek neemt in het Lijsternest. Als vertrekpunt geven we een facsimile van enkele fragmenten uit het boek. Paul Thiers stelt de bibliografie van Avelghem samen. Het openingsartikel is van Peter Theunynck, die het ‘Rijke Roomse leven’ beschrijft zoals dat in Avelghem nadrukkelijk aanwezig is. Eind negentiende eeuw had de religie een enorme impact op het persoonlijke leven. Taboe op seksualiteit leidde bovendien tot scrupuleus zondebesef. Terugblikkend schrikt Streuvels er ook niet voor terug stevige kritiek te leveren op de pedagogische kwaliteiten van de collegeleraren uit zijn studietijd. Paul Thiers behandelt in zijn bijdrage over Avelghem Frank Lateur/Stijn Streuvels als schooljongen, als bakker in Avelgem, vooral ook als debuterend auteur. Heel wat van de Avelgemse ervaringen hebben trouwens de verhalen van de schrijver gestoffeerd. In zijn bijdrage over Stille avonden (1905) ziet Toon Breës de vijf stukken in het boek als creatieve mijmerteksten met een autobiografisch karakter, gekoppeld aan een zelfbewuste bezinning van de auteur over de opdracht van de schrijver. Johan van Iseghem staat stil bij de ‘hebbelijkheden en onhebbelijkheden’ van de familie Gezelle zoals de bijna negentigjarige Streuvels die beschrijft in zijn Kroniek van de familie Gezelle uit 1960.

Yet three generations have grown up with De Coene furniture and their interiors. Few design-lovers know that over the course of the twentieth century, the Kunstwerkstede De Coene won countless prizes at national and international fairs and world exhibitions. Only fans of Art Deco will know that Kortrijk was the largest interbellum production center of Art Deco furni- ture in Belgium – and that its reputation and market were interna- tional in scope. After the Second World War, De Coene was one of the most important distributors of modern furniture in Belgium for people from all walks of life, as well as the Benelux producer of the exclusive Knoll furniture line. The firm collaborated with such well-known figures as Marcel Breuer, Charlotte Perriand and Jean Prouvé.

Deze notities, die ik in de eerste skript ook niet had verwerkt, heb ik nu in het nieuwe stuk opgenomen. Verder heb ik de nieuwe tekst nog vergeleken met de tekst van de geluidsband van de film en al wat interessant was en in de tekst van het voorbereidend gesprek niet voorkwam, heb ik eveneens overgenomen. Alleen zal de lezer merken dat in de meer recente skripts de manier van behandeling wel eens werd gewijzigd. Zo werd daar meer aandacht besteed aan de beschrijving van het interieur en de levenssfeer van de bezochte prominent. In de televisieuitzending wordt deze beschrijving gesteund door het beeld en ik meende aanvankelijk deze delen te schrappen.

    Literary translation from Flemish into German during the Nazi regime Ine Van linthout (Ghent University / Free University of Brussels) Abstract. During the Nazi regime and, more specifically, the Second World War, literary translation was eyed with suspicion by the controlling instances as it inevitably involved the import of foreign thought as well as economic exchange with foreign states. Against this backdrop, Flanders represents an interesting case. On the one hand, since it was considered a ‘kindred’ source-language nation, the translation of Flemish literature into German was encouraged within the constraints of the totalitarian system. On the other hand, persisting literary traditions, the private market logic, the agency of mediators, and the prevailing Catholic tone and idyllic nature of much Flemish literature caused significant disparities between translation policy and practice. Starting from the publishing figures of translated Flemish literature in Nazi Germany and their evolution during the twelve-year period, this article confronts official attitudes and discourses regarding Flemish translated fiction with the actual situation within the translated fiction market.
