Chanelfall 2011 ST. PETER Fall 2011 CHANELEXCELSA iSeek Blazing the new frontier with Apple’s iPad2 2010-2011 Annual Fund GREETINGS A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Recently I underwent major surgery. While I would not wish this for anyone, it turned out to be a wonder- ful blessing for me. The entire Chanel family rallied round in so many different ways to show their heartfelt concern and support. It would take volumes to tell all the touching stories. I always knew that Chanel’s mission handed down from the Class of 61 for 54 years was pure, noble, and vibrant, but now I have what you could call “documented” proof! I think that is my main message to you in this letter – the current students at St. Peter Chanel High School have learned and are living out Gospel values and Chanel’s mission in a beautiful way. Yes, the cover of this magazine is sporting the iPad 2 which the kids are currently using in class. It is a testament to their academic prowess and tech savvy. But the DVDs that they made for me and for Bishop Lennon as we recuperate could have only carried the thoughts and prayers that they expressed because they were born of an unbelievably wonderful Catholic education – an education that teaches the way of Jesus Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints. You, the extended Chanel family, participate in this Gospel work. You are making an incredible difference in all of our lives. Much literature is out there researching the “digital generation”. But I sleep peacefully at night because I know that our students have learned the most important lessons in life. St. Peter Chanel High School is moving forward with courage, confidence, and hope. As one author put it: The table of God is for everyone. God goes right into the middle of life to look for all people. God wants our yes. This is what Chanel does so very well. We all say yes to God. That is the Firebird spirit. May you always accompany us in this most remarkable journey. God bless Sister Maria SEEK WHAT IS ABOVE ST. • Folk Song in Cumbria: a Distinctive Regional
FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one.

And for Laura Ingram Ellis: as much as I wanted this dissertation to spring forth from my head fully formed, like Athena from Zeus’s forehead, it did not happen that way. It happened one sentence at a time, some more excruciatingly wrought than others, and you were there for every single sentence. So these sentences I have written especially for you, Laura, with my deepest and most profound gratitude. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Although it sometimes felt like a solitary process, I wrote this dissertation with the help and support of several different people, all of whom I deeply appreciate. First and foremost on this list is Prof. Charles Hiroshi Garrett, whom I learned so much from and whose patience and wisdom helped shape this project. The Clissold Arms has always been well known to the fans as the home of the Kinks, as it was the site of the first ever live performance by Ray and Dave Davies, so that was the obvious place to meet up. About a dozen of us had a very pleasant evening in the saloon (now the main restaurant - the layout of the pub in those days was somewhat different) discussing all matters Kinks and examining the small area of wall that contained a few pieces of Kinks memorabilia and photos, and it became a regular feature of the Konvention weekend for those who had travelled to London on the Saturday to gather at the Clissold. The Clissold Arms Kinks wall 1998 The numbers meeting gradually increased over the years and in 2002, Henny Stahli and the late Herman Gombert (“The Kinky Two”) were among our number. Herman got his guitar out and started strumming and the rest of us happily sang along to a few Kinks classics.
