Learning to Be a Guest in the Home of Another: Perceptions, Purpose and Positioning in Short Term Volunteerism Learning to be a Guest in the Home of Another: Perceptions, Purpose and Positioning in Short Term Volunteerism by Tammy Ruth Smith Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Education (with coursework component) June 2012 Graduate School of Education The University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper Abstract This study analyses the expectations and reflections of participants in the ‘Thailand Mission Awareness Tours’ program as they prepare for, take part in and return from their intercultural experience. Sending organizations do not have the ability to influence how short term missions (STM) or volunteer tourists (VT) are received or viewed by long-term workers or nationals, but they are able to prepare them in how to better position themselves for the experience. Unfortunately volunteer travelers are often more focused on what they can accomplish at a location than on the relationships they could encounter, develop and build while being there. They build houses rather than relationships (Reese, 2009, p. xviii) for the locals rather than with them (Armstrong, 2006; Schwartz, 2003). To work with someone there must be equality, togetherness, a two way relationship. Being Guest and Host, as part of the hospitality suggested by Derrida (2000), is a relationship that is reliant upon one and the Other. It requires a disposition which is significantly different. Literature from within VT and STM, whilst philosophically different, is strikingly similar in content and emphasis. Most of this literature focuses on the positive profiling and experience of the travel participant and largely overlooks the experience of the host and host community. This focus has been criticised in the literature, but little has as yet been done to amend the situation (Gray & Campbell, 2007). In this ethnographic study positionality, as experienced by participants in the Thailand Mission Awareness Tour (TMAT) program, is examined. The emphasis is on how they position themselves in relation to each other, their hosts and the host community. Some findings were surprising and unexpected, particularly in relation to the participants’ responses to, and interaction with, expatriate hosts. Participants tended to compare themselves and their life situations with those of the expatriates, and often judged themselves quite harshly as a result. The author concludes that pre-travel education for those going on a volunteer experience should situate them in a receptive frame in preparation for positioning themselves as Guest, thereby supporting mutuality, relationality and positive experience for all involved. i It is suggested that further research be undertaken into the efficacy of the type of education proposed in this thesis and how, or if, that education influences the positionality of participants. It is also suggested that research be undertaken into how this education and the resultant positionality is responded to by hosts and their communities. There is much work that remains to be done in this space relating to improving intercultural communication.     A New Method of Classification for Tai Textiles Patricia Cheesman Textiles, as part of Southeast Asian traditional clothing and material culture, feature as ethnic identification markers in anthropological studies. Textile scholars struggle with the extremely complex variety of textiles of the Tai peoples and presume that each Tai ethnic group has its own unique dress and textile style. This method of classification assumes what Leach calls “an academic fiction … that in a normal ethnographic situation one ordinarily finds distinct tribes distributed about the map in an orderly fashion with clear-cut boundaries between them” (Leach 1964: 290). Instead, we find different ethnic Tai groups living in the same region wearing the same clothing and the same ethnic group in different regions wearing different clothing. For example: the textiles of the Tai Phuan peoples in Vientiane are different to those of the Tai Phuan in Xiang Khoang or Nam Nguem or Sukhothai. At the same time, the Lao and Tai Lue living in the same region in northern Vietnam weave and wear the same textiles. Some may try to explain the phenomena by calling it “stylistic influence”, but the reality is much more profound. The complete repertoire of a people’s style of dress can be exchanged for another and the common element is geography, not ethnicity. The subject of this paper is to bring to light forty years of in-depth research on Tai textiles and clothing in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos), Thailand and Vietnam to demonstrate that clothing and the historical transformation of practices of social production of textiles are best classified not by ethnicity, but by geographical provenance.

Family background and personal life Born on 11 January 1903 in Berea, Durban, Natal, Siedle was the youngest son of Otto Siedle, who was born in Woolwich, London of southern German stock and who trained as a watchmaker, subsequently emigrating to Durban where he became prominent in the shipping business and public affairs. Otto Siedle's wife Mary became deputy mayor of Durban. Jack's older brother Karl Siedle played first-class cricket for Natal before the First World War, in which he was killed; his sister Perla Siedle Gibson became a well-known singer and a symbol of her country during the Second World War. Siedle married Lesley Maud McPherson on 14 March 1931, with his cricket colleague Eric Dalton as best man. Their son, John Siedle (1932–2008), played a few first-class cricket matches for Natal and Western Province in the mid- 1950s. Early cricket career A right-hander who played for Natal for 15 seasons from 1922–23 to 1936–37, Jack Siedle bowled occasionally and kept wicket just as infrequently, but his chief value to South Africa was as an opening batsman. Photo: UNDP PREFACE The tragedy of the tsunami that struck Thailand’s Andaman coast on 26 December 2004, and the devastation and misery it left in its wake, is unprecedented in recent history. This disaster also brought forth an extraordinary response. Thailand, under the strong leadership of the Royal Thai Government (RTG), provided effective, efficient and comprehensive relief and humanitarian assistance to the Thai people, as well as to the large number of foreigners affected by the disaster. The scale of the disaster was matched by the generosity of the Thai people, who came forward to assist the victims of the tragedy in an extraordinary display of humanity. The Thai private sector and local NGOs also played a major role in the relief and recovery effort. Organizations and individuals from around the world contributed money and resources in support of Thailand’s response to the tsunami, and the world gratefully acknowledged the role of the RTG in dealing with the tragedy and its aftermath. Given its capacity and resources, Thailand did not appeal for international financial assistance. The international community has therefore played a relatively small but strategic role in Thailand’s tsunami recovery. The United Nations Country Team (UNCT), bilateral development agencies, and international NGOs have contributed structured support to the Royal Thai Government’s recovery efforts in areas where the RTG welcomed support from international partners: providing technical support, equipment, and direct support to the affected communities.
