Suman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU, HAWAII Abstract: This paper contains a systematic list of species, and the literature references, of the spiders occurring in the Hawaiian Islands. The species total 149 of which 17 are record ed here for the first time. This paper lists the records and literature of the spiders in the Hawaiian Islands. The islands included are Kure, Midway, Laysan, French Frigate Shoal, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii. The only major work dealing with the spiders in the Hawaiian Is. was published 60 years ago in " Fauna Hawaiiensis " by Simon (1900 & 1904). All of the endemic spiders known today, except Pseudanapis aloha Forster, are described in that work which also in cludes a listing of several introduced species. The spider collection available to Simon re presented only a small part of the entire Hawaiian fauna. In all probability, the endemic species are only partly known. Since the appearance of Simon's work, there have been many new records and lists of introduced spiders. The known Hawaiian spider fauna now totals 149 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 21 families and 66 genera. Of this total, 82 species (5596) are believed to be endemic and belong to 10 families and 27 genera including 7 endemic genera. The introduced spe cies total 65 (44^). Two unidentified species placed in indigenous genera comprise the remaining \%. Seventeen species are recorded here for the first time. In the catalog section of this paper, families, genera and species are listed alphabetical ly for convenience. -

Imada Hawaii Biological Survey Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96817, USA Final Report prepared for the U.S. Navy Contribution No. 2021-003 to the Hawaii Biological Survey EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Bishop Museum was contracted by the U.S. Navy to conduct surveys of terrestrial arthropods in Hālona Valley, Naval Magazine Lualualei Annex, in order to assess the status of populations of three groups of insects, including species at risk in those groups: picture-winged Drosophila (Diptera; flies), Hylaeus spp. (Hymenoptera; bees), and Rhyncogonus welchii (Coleoptera; weevils). The first complete survey of Lualualei for terrestrial arthropods was made by Bishop Museum in 1997. Since then, the Bishop Museum has conducted surveys in Hālona Valley in 2015, 2016–2017, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020. The current survey was conducted from August 2020 through November 2020, comprising a total of 12 trips; using yellow water pan traps, pitfall traps, hand collecting, aerial net collecting, observations, vegetation beating, and a Malaise trap. The area chosen for study was a Sapindus oahuensis grove on a southeastern slope of mid-Hālona Valley. The area had potential for all three groups of arthropods to be present, especially the Rhyncogonus weevil, which has previously been found in association with Sapindus trees. Trapped and collected insects were taken back to the Bishop Museum for sorting, identification, data entry, and storage and preservation. The results of the surveys proved negative for any of the target groups. -

Abstract. A large-scale phylogenetic study is presented for Cucujoidea (Coleoptera), a diverse superfamily of beetles that historically has been taxonomically difficult. This study is the most comprehensive analysis of cucujoid taxa to date, with DNA sequence data sampled from eight genes (four nuclear, four mitochondrial) for 384 coleopteran taxa, including exemplars of 35 (of 37) families and 289 genera of Cucujoidea. Maximum-likelihood analyses of these data present many significant relationships, some proposed previously and some novel. -
Phylogenetic Systematics of the Cerylonid Series of Cucujoidea
PHYLOGENETIC SYSTEMATICS OF THE CERYLONID SERIES OF CUCUJOIDEA (COLEOPTERA) by JAMES A. ROBERTSON (Under the Direction of Joseph V. McHugh) ABSTRACT We conduct a large-scale phylogenetic investigation of the Cerylonid Series (C.S.) of Cucujoidea, a diverse group of cucujoid beetles comprising 9,600 species classified in eight families, using morphological data (76 taxa ! 147 adult and larval characters), molecular data (341 taxa ! 9 genes: 18S, 28S, H3, 12S, 16S, COI, COII, CAD and ArgK) and a combination of the two datasets. In total, our analyses suggest the following: the C.S. is a monophyletic group based on both morphological and molecular evidence; the superfamily Cucujoidea is paraphyletic with respect to the remaining superfamilies in the series Cucujiformia; the C.S. represents a unique clade within Cucujiformia and should be recognized as its own supferfamily, Coccinelloidea, within the series; Byturidae and Biphyllidae should be transferred to Cleroidea; the C.S. families Corylophidae, Coccinellidae, Latridiidae, and Discolomatidae, are monophyletic; Cerylonidae, Endomychidae, and Bothrideridae are paraphyletic. Bothrideridae is split into two distinct families comprising the former Bothriderinae (as Bothrideridae) and the other including the remaining subfamilies (as Teredidae); the cerylonid subfamily Euxestinae is included within Teredidae; the new concept of Cerylonidae includes the following subfamilies: Ceryloninae, Ostomopsinae, Murmidiinae, Discolomatinae and Loeblioryloninae (inserte sedis); the status of the putative -

Dr. Pemberton delivered an informative talk on the meetings of the Entomology Section of the Ninth Pacific Science Congress, held in Bangkok during November of 1957. Dr. Gressitt gave an excellent Kodachrome-illustrated account of his recent collecting trip through the New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, New Guinea, British Borneo, and Thailand. Notes and Exhibitions Entomological Projects at the B. P. Bishop Museum: Dr. Gressitt presented the following information: "Dr. Larry W. Quate will join the museum staff in February and will work on the museum's project on 'South Pacific Insects of Public Health Importance'. Also working on this project will be Mr. T. C. Maa of Taiwan who will be on a three-year field fellowship. Mr. Maa will pro ceed shortly to Malaya, Thailand, and British Borneo. Dr. John Smart of Cambridge University has already spent about five months in New Guinea on this project, and will soon leave for Australia. -

However, parasitism appears not to have been important or at least not recognized until about 1800 when European and American ships began to call frequently. Since that time, parasites have been found in many species; for instance, in birds, in cluding chickens, turkeys, pigeons, pheasants, doves, ducks, sparrows, herons, coots, and quails, and in mammals, including mice, rats, mongooses, rabbits, cats, dogs, pigs, sheep, cattle, horses, and man. There is a certain uniqueness in the compressed history of the infestations paralleling the sweeping spread of virus diseases when introduced into new territories. 'I"he reports of these parasitic diseases have heretofore been 'i\Tidely scat tered in the literature, and Professor Alicata's publication now provides an orderly and systematic presentation of the entire field. He considers in sequence the considerable number of diseases reported to be caused in Hawaii by protozoa, the very large number caused by nemathelminthes, and the smaller group caused by platyhelminthes. rrhis publication will furnish basic information for future parasitologists who in turn will be immensely grateful. Puri®cation and characterization of the venom extract of the scoliid wasp Megacampsomeris prismatica led to the identi®cation of bradykinin and threonine6-bradykinin as the major peptide components. The survey of a number of extracts from solitary wasp venom by MALDI±TOF MS revealed that the venoms of two other scoliid wasps, Campsomeriella annulata annulata and Carinoscolia melanosoma fascinata, also contained Thr6-BK as one of the major components. Thus, this study showed the presence of bradykinins in some of the solitary wasp venoms. Moreover, it indicated that these peptides play a major role in their paralyzing action for prey capture because these bradykinins have been shown to block the synaptic transmission of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the insect central nervous system. q 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. BEARDSLEY† (Research Associate, Hawaii Biological Survey, Bishop Museum, 1525 Bernice Street, Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96817-2704, USA) Introduction This paper presents results of a recent (1997–1999) survey of terrestrial arthropods of Midway Atoll and lists 546 species identified from 1891 to 1999. The last published com- pilation (Suehiro, 1960) listed 221 species, and the first complete listing from the 1923 Tanager Expedition published 38 species (Bryan et al., 1926). The increasing number of arthropod species reflected in these surveys is likely related to the increase in plant species present, increased contact between Midway and the outside world by means of surface and air vessels, and increased effort on the part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to inventory the arthropod fauna. The percentage of the fauna composed of native species (17%) is small and some of these species were not recollected during the present survey. Also, a large number (33%) of historically recorded alien species were not recollected. More recently introduced immigrants may have displaced some of them. The present list includes 205 new island records from Midway including 29 new records for the Hawaiian archipelago. Continued introductions resulting from frequent visits to Midway by unin- spected air and surface vessels will result in serious pest problems there.
