The first cycling race there was held on 15 August 1869, on the occasion of the annual fair. It took place on the Promenade de l’Île, the same place where stage 4 of the 2006 Tour de France would later get under way. It did not take long for Huy to become an iconic site of Belgian cycling. © A.S.O. - G. DEMOUVEAUX In 1919, a velodrome was built to host prestigious events such as the Belgian national championships. Huy hosted La Flèche Wallonne for the first time in 1936, when Théo van Griethuizen, who was out on reconnaissance duties, came across a hill worthy of the event’s reputation. The Flèche Wallonne tackled the Mur de Huy for the first time in 1982, and its finish has been located at the top of the climb since 1984. The Tour de France has gone through Huy six times since its first foray into Belgium in 1947, but the town had to wait until 8 July 1995 for the privilege of hosting a stage of the Grande Boucle. So when it comes to the sport of professional cycling, why aren't women receiving half the road? Directed by pro cyclist Kathryn Bertine, HALF THE ROAD: The Passion, Pitfalls & Power of Women's Professional Cycling explores the world of women's professional cycling, focusing on both the love of sport and the pressing issues of inequality that modern-day female athletes face in male dominated sports. With footage from some of the world's best races to interviews with Olympians, World Champions, rookies, coaches, officials, doctors and family members, HALF THE ROAD offers a unique insight to the drive, dedication, and passion it takes for a female cyclist to thrive. Included as well are notable women who have achieved inroads in other endurance sports, such as Kathrine Switzer, the first woman to official register (as "K.V. Switzer") and run the all-male Boston Marathon in 1967; the iconic photo of her being attacked by a race official was listed by Time-Life as among its "100 Photographs that Changed the World." Director’s Bio: Kathryn Bertine is a professional cyclist, writer and filmmaker.

• Utilising Sporting Autobiographies for Feminist Research
Utilising Sporting Autobiographies for Feminist Research: The Case of Cyclist Nicole Cooke Carly Stewart Sparkes and Stewart (2015:2) note the ‘enthusiasm that has greeted the study of autobiographies’ in a variety of disciplines (e.g. literary theory, history, anthropology, sociology) and cross-disciplinary fields (e.g. cultural studies, women’s’ studies). Not so in sport. On the contrary, scholars have signalled their relative neglect despite potential to offer a rich source of data (Stewart, Sparkes & Smith 2011; Thing & Ronglan 2015). Offering an explanation for this current state of affairs, Sparkes and Stewart (2015) draw attention to negative views and misplaced assumptions that convey surmountable problems for the acceptance of sporting autobiographies as a serious resource for researchers in sport. For example, often lumped together under the heading of ‘celebrity autobiographies’, sports autobiographies are charged with being commercially driven for profit, formulaic or predictable in nature (often ‘ghost-written’), uninteresting and limited in expressive form, superficial in content, banal and cliché ridden. This said, concerning their use for research purposes there is a cultural suspicion around their ‘unmediated authenticity’ (Smith & Watson 2010) or truth which may position them as rather dubious source material (Taylor 2008). However, presenting a more positive view, autobiographies of athletes could be viewed, and are widely consumed as, a cultural phenomenon in their own right (Sparkes and Stewart 2015; Young 2001). Sparkes and Stewart (2015:7) propose that many are ‘well- written, include complex plotlines, and provide illuminating insights into the lives of athletes’ over time with the more memorable ones perhaps drawing our attention to the experiences of those which intervene in wider contemporary discussions.
