Leask, Office of Public Works, Dublin - dates vine leaf capitals in Down Cathedral to c.1325; seeks name of a monumental mason in Downpatrick to repair a gravestone; would be glad to borrow the pamphlet to copy the Grey Abbey mason's marks. 41. 17 Jul [19]33 Do - returns Grey Abbey pamphlet; believes Down capitals are of the pre- Black Death period; thanks for information about the grave stone repair; thanks for congratulations on engagement. 42. 5 Aug [19]36 [Very Revd] J[ames] A[lfred] Lendrum, [], The Deanery, Tuam, Co. Galway - commends to Carmody, for spiritual care the Misses Rutherford who are moving to Inch Lodge, Downpatrick; they have been forced out of Turin Castle by the Land Commission; "...one of the most disgusting cases that have come under my notice...". 43. 4 Feb 1935 [Canon] James B[lennerhassett] Leslie, [Rector of Kilsaran (Armagh); Chancellor of Armagh], Kilsaran Rectory, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth - sends presentation copies of[Biographical Succession Lists of the Clergy of Diocese of Down]; has 40 subscriptions so far, mostly from outside the diocese; another 50 subscriptions needed. 44. 28 May 1937 Webb, Scott & Seymour, solicitors, 16 Sth Frederick St, Dublin - states the view of the Ministry of Finance on the use of the trust income from Longstone Street Schools, Lisburn; may be

6 regarded as a Church of Ireland Charity but the money should not be devoted exclusively to religious purposes; a nursary school would have been an appropriate purpose but no such school in Lisburn. 45. 24 Jul 1937 Robert C. Bannister, solicitor, 30 Market Square, Lisburn, [Co.Antrim] - sends memo of interview with Mr Duggan on suggestions for a new trust arising out of the closure of the Infant School, Longstone Street, Lisburn; Canon [J.S.] Taylor, Rector of Lisburn Cathedral parish, who,has always been identified with the school favours a nursery and Sunday School project. 46. 25 Aug 1936 W.J.L. McClurg, English St, Downpatrick - seeks assent to having a door in the entry to facilitate access to the garden. 47. 18 Nov 1936 Helen Macnaghten, Runkerry, Bushmills, Co. Antrim - sends details, including a sketch, of a memorial to Sir Francis Workman Macnaghten, 1763-1843. 48. 14 Mar 1936 John F[rederick McNeice, Bishop of] Down, Bishop's House, Malone Road Belfast to Prime Minister [Lord Craigavon] (copy) - has shown the bishop a memo rel. to services in St Anne's Cathedral which might be attended by members of the government; no difficulty in coming to an arrangement about such services but the bishop has the responsibility of deciding which clergy shall take part and cannot delegate that to another party or be a party to any agreement which might bind his successors; members of the government and officials will always be welcome in the Cathedral but the control of services must always remain with the Church of Ireland. [n.d.] Copy memo marked confidential - proposed that official religious services, as determined by the Governor of N. Ireland, should be held alternately in Belfast Cathedral and Assembly Buildings; that the lessons at such services should be read by the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, the Archbishop of Armagh and the President of the Methodist Church; that seats shall be allocated among these three churches according to

7 their respective church membership. 49. 15 Apr 1936 John F[rederick McNeice, Bishop of] Down - had hoped to call in Downpatrick yesterday on return from Glassdrummond; this morning was at the Lord Chief Justice's levée; Commissioners have recommended the retention of Ballyscullion instead of Duneane glebe house; has decided to appoint [Canon] Moore Morrow to Ballyscullion; complains of the Newsletter making nonsense of his speech at Newcastle. 50. 17 Apr [19]36 Do - Ballyscullion & Duneane rectories; wants Carmody and [Ven.
