Down - glad to hear that Struel Wells are to be an ancient monument and open to the public. 2. 9 Feb [19]37 W[illiam] J[ames] Askins, [Dean of Kilmore], Danesfort, Co. Cavan - accepts invitation to preach on 10 October. 3. 6 Apr 1935 J.R. Bainbridge, photographer, 26 Shandon Park, Knock, Belfast - acknowledgement of photographs in handbook of Down Cathedral. 4. 28 Apr 1936 J[ames] C[amlin] Beckett, Royal Academy, Cliftonville, Belfast, [later Professor of Irish History, The Queen's University of Belfast] - requests assistance with sources for a thesis on the Penal Laws and Protestant Non-Conformists in Ireland in the 18th Century; enquires about the Beresford manuscripts which "have recently come into your hands". 5. 5 May 1936 Do - thanks for reply which confirms his views about the enforcement of the penal laws against non-conformists; seeks information from the records of the episcopal courts about the prosecution of Presbyterian ministers for performing marriages. 6. 12 Apr [19]35 [Revd] M[atthew] Beckett, [Vicar of Ballyhalbert (Down), 1902-20], Hazelwood, Ballinderry, Co. Antrim - problems of establishing the parish boundaries; sends list of rectors and would be glad of additions; would like to call on Carmody but under strict orders from the doctor. 15. 10 Apr 1936 C[harles] F[rederick D'Arcy, Archbishop of] A[rmagh], S.S. Narkunda, Marseilles - thanks for letter; enjoyable voyage; Canon Blackwood-Price an eccellent companion and ADC; hopes to go to Good Friday service in the English Church. 16. 23 Mar 1937 Charles F[rederick, D'Arcy, Archbishop of] Armagh, The Palace, Armagh - enclosure from the Bishop of New York [not present]; has mentioned Carmody's work as an antiquarian and the recent gift of a St Patrick Window [erected in Down Cathedral in 1937 in memory of the 2nd Baron Dunleath] to the Bishop. 3 17. 11 Jun 1937 Revd W[illiam] J[ohn] Noel Mackey, Hon. Secretary, Down and Connor and Dromore Diocesan Library Committee, Clarence Place Hall, May Street, Belfast - reports that the Committee is to examine Archdeacon Atkinson's [Edward Dupré Atkinson, Archdeacon of Dromore, 1905-30, d.26 April 1937] books; card index making steady progress. 18. 27 Jul 1936 G.B. Harris, [Secretary], Diocesan Office, Clarence Place Hall, Belfast - income of the Revd Alexander Beattie, Curate-in-Charge of the parish of Kilmore (Down). 19. 15 Aug [19]35 ? Downshire, Murlough House, Dundrum, Co. Down - invitation to the Flower Show. 20. 26 Apr [19]36 [Charles Henry George Mulholland, 3rd Baron] Dunleath, Harewood Court, Hanover Square, [London] W.1 - appreciates being appointed as a parochial nominator for Down; has heard from the Primate [D'Arcy] that he is enjoying himself [see no.14 above]. 21. 30 Mar 1936 ? H.K. Worsley, [Dunleath] Estate Office, Downpatrick, Co. Down - has not heard that Downpatrick Lawn Tennis Club intend to surrender their lease of ground near the Cathedral. 22. 15 Jun 1936 Do - willing to recommend the letting to the Cathedral of the ground formerly held by Downpatrick Tennis Club. 23. 25 Mar 1936 R[obert] Dudley Edwards, [later Professor of Modern Irish History, University College, Dublin], 53 Grosvenor Road, Rathgar, Dublin - sends proofs of T.C.D. manuscript which he is editing [probably the "Letter Book of Sir Arthur Chichester 1612-1614" in Analecta Hibernica, No.8, March 1938] in connection with John Todd, Bishop of Dromore, 1607-12. 24. 7 Apr 1936 Do - thanks for return of proofs; will look out for any further information on Todd; perhaps there is a Todd will in Somerset House. 25. 23 Apr 1936 Do - sends a further letter from his proofs. 26. 28 Apr 1936 Do - has completed the manuscript but has found no more of Todd. 27. 15 Jul 1936 E. E[styn] Evans, [Lecturer in Geography], Queen's University, 4 Belfast-recommending an unnamed student for a post as a geography teacher in Downpatrick High School; suggests bringing the prpoosed destruction of Newtownbreda rectory before the Ancient Monuments Committee. 28. 10 Jul 1937 [Ven.] A[braham] Lockett Ford, [Archdeacon of Armagh], The Rectory, Ardee, [Co. Louth] - reports progress of a fund [probably for a presentation to the Archbishop of Armagh, C.F. D'Arcy]. 29. 25 May 1937 [Revd] Ja[me]s E[mmet] K[irkwood] Haddick, Kilmore Rectory, Crossgar, {Co. Down]-explainingthe circumstances of a dispute about the tenancy of a cottage which is owned by the parish of Kilmore. 30. 29 May 1937 Do - chaotic state of the parish finances; problems created by vesting parish property in trustees. 31. 6 Jun 1937 Do - continued difficulty with parish finances due to lack of records; problems with the parish registers referred to the Registrar-General. 32. 11 Apr [19]36 T.E. Hastings, Downpatrick Monumental Works, Church Street, Downpatrick - sends templates for the window [St Patrick window in Down Cathedral]. 33. 2 Apr 1936 H. O'Neill Hencken, Harvard University, Division of Anthropology, Peabody Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, [USA] - sends report of [H.L.] Movius [see nos 58-62 below] on excavations on the River Bann; Movius in Australia but they hope to come to N.Ireland later in the year. 34. 12 Jul 1937 H. O'Neill Hencken, National Museum of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin - sends a book by a Harvard colleague on his sociological researches in the west of Ireland; hopes to come to Belfast later in the year. 35. 21 Jun 1937 Alex W. Hughes, Wm C. Hogan & Sons, Solicitors, 3 Lower Merrion Street, Dublin - notes acceptance of the offer to lease unspecified ground; can prepare an agreement; Mrs Webber's income not so favourable as in past years. 36. 26 Dec 1936 Charles [King Irwin, Bishop of] Limerick, The See House, Pery Square, Limerick - would be glad go to Down 5 for the harvest festival but cannot manage the suggested dates; suggests an alternative date. 37. 3 Mar [19]35 H[enry] C[airnes] Lawlor, Killyfaddy, Windsor Avenue, Belfast - still recovering and unable to travel; excavations at Down Cathedral sound interesting; discussion of absence of medieval foundations; discussion of the validity of the creation of Lisburn Cathedral. 38. 11 Apr 1935 Wm Lawrence, [landscape photogapher], 42 Lower O'Connell Street, Dublin - grants permission for reproduction of photographs in handbook. 39. 25 Apr 1935 Do - enclosing receipt for payment of reproduction fee. 40. 13 Jul 1933 Harold G. Leask, Office of Public Works, Dublin - dates vine leaf capitals in Down Cathedral to c.1325; seeks name of a monumental mason in Downpatrick to repair a gravestone; would be glad to borrow the pamphlet to copy the Grey Abbey mason's marks. 41. 17 Jul [19]33 Do - returns Grey Abbey pamphlet; believes Down capitals are of the pre- Black Death period; thanks for information about the grave stone repair; thanks for congratulations on engagement. 42. 5 Aug [19]36 [Very Revd] J[ames] A[lfred] Lendrum, [Dean of Tuam], The Deanery, Tuam, Co. Galway - commends to Carmody, for spiritual care the Misses Rutherford who are moving to Inch Lodge, Downpatrick; they have been forced out of Turin Castle by the Land Commission; "...one of the most disgusting cases that have come under my notice...". 43. 4 Feb 1935 [Canon] James B[lennerhassett] Leslie, [Rector of Kilsaran (Armagh); Chancellor of Armagh], Kilsaran Rectory, Castlebellingham, Co. Louth - sends presentation copies of[Biographical Succession Lists of the Clergy of Diocese of Down]; has 40 subscriptions so far, mostly from outside the diocese; another 50 subscriptions needed.
