  • Forecasting Tourists Arrivals at Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park in Zimbabwe Using SARIMA Model
International Tourism and Hospitality Journal 1(2): 1-10 (2018) Print ISSN: 2616-518X Online ISSN: 2616-4701 RPA ITHJ Journals International Tourism and Hospitality Journal Journal Homepage: https://rpajournals.com/ithj Forecasting Tourists Arrivals at Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park in Zimbabwe Using SARIMA Model Tendai Makoni*1, Delson Chikobvu2 Bongani Maphosa3 Great Zimbabwe University, Zimbabwe1,3 University of the Free State, South Africa2 Abstract Forecasting tourist arrivals and volatility for Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Parks using SARIMA-GARCH models are vital for decision and planning purposes. The monthly data from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) for the period January 2010 to December 2016 was used. The time series plot indicated mixed fluctuations in tourist arrivals and exhibited seasonality. The series became stationary after a logarithmic transformation and a seasonal difference. The Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) and the Bayesian Information Criterion was used in selecting the best model and a SARIMA(1,0,1)(1,1,0)12 model fitted well to the data. The residuals of the model confirmed to all tests. Accuracy measures like the mean absolute error (MAE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) supported the model and an out of sample for the next 24 months (2017 to 2018) were done. From the forecasts, an increase in tourist arrivals was noted. The results imply the need for enough accommodation facilities in and around the recreational centre. Keywords: Tourist arrivals, ARIMA models, SARIMA models, time series plot 1 *Corresponding author: Tendai Makoni ; Email: [email protected] Submission Date: 9 June 2018 Acceptance Date: 17 June 2018 Introduction Forecasting is a key tool for planning and decision-making in modern business organisations, according to Thoplan (2014).

Initially a community lobby and advocacy group on human rights issues encompassing HIV and AIDS issues, livelihoods and governance issues was founded within the Godlwayo (Filabusi) community (Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe). The need to improve schools pass rate within Filabusi area greatly informed the formation of this initiative as the community well wishers started making financial donations towards paying school fees for disadvantaged but ably performing school kids and this gave birth to a program called Godlwayo Education scholarship Program (GESP). Also the community identified gaps in information dissemination since there is a media blackout in the area so the idea of a community radio initiative was then muted and supported and this gave birth to a community radio initiative by name Godlwayofm specifically for information dissemination currently using bulk sms facility to share community news. After a year of operating in Godlwayo (Filabusi) it has been noted that the services of the organization are needed in other district and surrounding areas and since this means growth and expansion, the need to register as a formal organization was then realized.

  • Design of a Link Road to Connect the Beitbridge- Chirundu Highway to Harare Drive in Harare, Zimbabwe
Design of a Link Road to Connect the Beitbridge- Chirundu Highway to Harare Drive in Harare, Zimbabwe Joan R. Shumba1, Samson Shumba2, Liliana D. Vassileva3 , Namatirai Cheure4 {[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]} Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Zimbabwe, P.O Box MP167 Mount Pleasant, Harare Abstract. The project focussed on the design of a link road to connect the Beitbridge- Chirundu Highway to Harare Drive and Kirkman Road in Harare, Zimbabwe. The proposed link road is approximately 17 km long. The link road will alleviate traffic flowing into Harare by linking the missing portion of Harare drive a ring road to a major highway. A manual traffic count was carried out to determine the percentage of heavy vehicles in transit on the highway. The results were compared to historic traffic counts. The analysis was carried out using QGIS and AchiCAD softwares, Microsoft excel and AutoCAD. The geometric design of the link road and intersection was carried out based on guidelines for Southern Africa roads. The link road and grade separated intersection with a design life of 20 years was designed. It is recommended that traffic flow be diverted and extra caution be taken during the construction. Keywords: Highways, Traffic congestion, Ring Road, Grade Separated Intersection and Geometric Design. 1 Introduction 1.1 Background Major cities throughout Zimbabwe are experiencing considerable increases in population, consequently the traffic demand on each city’s transportation infrastructure has also increased. The rapid increase in car ownership contributes to the unmanageable flows of traffic thereby reducing the efficiency of the road network.

  • Gonarezhou National Park (GNP) and the Indigenous Communities of South East Zimbabwe, 1934-2008
Living on the fringes of a protected area: Gonarezhou National Park (GNP) and the indigenous communities of South East Zimbabwe, 1934-2008 by Baxter Tavuyanago A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy (History) in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies at the UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SUPERVISOR: PROFESSOR A. S. MLAMBO July 2016 i © University of Pretoria Abstract This study examines the responses of communities of south-eastern Zimbabwe to their eviction from the Gonarezhou National Park (GNP) and their forced settlement in the peripheral areas of the park. The thesis establishes that prior to their eviction, the people had created a utilitarian relationship with their fauna and flora which allowed responsible reaping of the forest’s products. It reveals that the introduction of a people-out conservation mantra forced the affected communities to become poachers, to emigrate from south-eastern Zimbabwe in large numbers to South Africa for greener pastures and, to fervently join militant politics of the 1960s and 1970s. These forms of protests put them at loggerheads with the colonial government. The study reveals that the independence government’s position on the inviolability of the country’s parks put the people and state on yet another level of confrontation as the communities had anticipated the restitution of their ancestral lands. The new government’s attempt to buy their favours by engaging them in a joint wildlife management project called CAMPFIRE only slightly relieved the pain. The land reform programme of the early 2000s, again, enabled them to recover a small part of their old Gonarezhou homeland.
