Laura was our Producer, Kris Dudley's, mother and earned her "crew" credits by helping with props and costumes for many shows in this theater. She introduced Kris to her first theatrical experience when she was just a child and Kris has loved live theater ever since. We are so grateful to Laura for sharing her talented and loving daughter with us for so many years. Mary was the mother of our Lighting Designer, Mike Munoz, and often came with Mike to the theater when he was gelling, focusing, and adjusting the lights; setting light cues, etc. She will be remembered for her generous hugs, quick wit and gentle nagging of a devoted son whom she loved dearly. We thank these two wonderful ladies for bequeathing to us their two very dedicated and generous children. They have earned their heavenly crowns!! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •• • • • • • • <_ 'West '[laffey Ligfit Opera ~Ss&latIct\.~ Presents A Silicon Valley Premiere 'Broaaways :J\&wMusica{ by Cafe Porter Music & Lyrics by Cole Porter Book by Arthur Kopit Based on Philip Barry's "The Philadelphia Story" Additional Lyrics by Susan Birkenhead Starring BARBARA & TIM REYNOLDS Featuring Donald Benson, Molly Carter, Tom Doud, Jae Landers, Rachel Newman & Tyr Rodriguez Director: STEPHEN D. "High Society" opened at the St. James Theatre on April 27, 1998, and similarly this 'Silicon Valley' premiere has roots that began in 1938. Katherine Hepburn, reeling from a series of Hollywood flops, made a deci- sion to return to the Broadway stage in a play written exclusively for her by Philip Barry. That play was "The Philadelphia Story". Ms. Hepburn, known as a savvy investor, retained the motion picture rights to "The Philadelphia Story"-a shrewd decision in her illustrious and long career. The play opened on March 28, 1939 and became a smash hit. MGM was the obvious studio at that time to do the film. Fortified by a stream of bids for the rights from other studios, Ms. Hepburn struck a deal with movie mogul Louis B. Mayer that had one primary condition-that she, and she alone, would play Tracy Lord in the film. James Stewart and Cary Grant, two of the top leading men of the day, joined Ms. Hepburn in the "rest-is-history" production. Sixteen years later and musicalized by Cole Porter, the retitled play became a 1956 film entertainment entitled, "High Society". The film musi- cal starred Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and the future H.R.H. of Monaco, Grace Kelley. Cole Porter placed eight new songs in the hit film and added "Well, Did You Evah?" from his 1939 Broadway musical, "BuBarry Was A Lady" in the ninth slot. ACT in San Francisco staged the first theatrical production of "High Society" in 1997. With Arthur Kopit's book (based on both the play and the screen musical) and various Cole Porter hits taken from previous produc- tions, it was this musical that opened at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Arthur Kopit made an additional change to the book for a production of "High Society" that opened July 21, 2000, at Stages St. Louis. The "St. Louis Alternative" is presented in this West Valley Light Opera production and we wish to express our appreciation to both Stages St. Louis and Tams- Witmark Music Library for the ability to offer it to you. Now, sit back and enjoy the effervescent score of Cole Porter, the witty book of Arthur Kopit, and the romantic stories that are "High Society". -Stephen D.
