October- December 2000 Welcome to West Valley Light Opera Association's 36th Season! Welcome to our first production of the season, "High Society", a Silicon Valley premier. Subscriptions to this season will only be accepted through the run of "High Society".

If you enjoy the community theater productions you have seen in this theater, please tell your friends and pick up the flyers/brochures/cards in the lobby. Laura was our Producer, Kris Dudley's, mother and earned her "crew" credits by helping with props and costumes for many shows in this theater. She introduced Kris to her first theatrical experience when she was just a child and Kris has loved live theater ever since. We are so grateful to Laura for sharing her talented and loving daughter with us for so many years. Mary was the mother of our Lighting Designer, Mike Munoz, and often came with Mike to the theater when he was gelling, focusing, and adjusting the lights; setting light cues, etc. She will be remembered for her generous hugs, quick wit and gentle nagging of a devoted son whom she loved dearly.

We thank these two wonderful ladies for bequeathing to us their two very dedicated and generous children. They have earned their heavenly crowns!! • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •• • • • • • • <_ 'West '[laffey Ligfit Opera ~Ss&latIct\.~ Presents A Silicon Valley Premiere

"High Society" opened at the St. James Theatre on April 27, 1998, and similarly this 'Silicon Valley' premiere has roots that began in 1938. Katherine Hepburn, reeling from a series of Hollywood flops, made a deci- sion to return to the Broadway stage in a play written exclusively for her by Philip Barry. That play was "The Philadelphia Story". Ms. Hepburn, known as a savvy investor, retained the motion picture rights to "The Philadelphia Story"-a shrewd decision in her illustrious and long career. The play opened on March 28, 1939 and became a smash hit. MGM was the obvious studio at that time to do the film. Fortified by a stream of bids for the rights from other studios, Ms. Hepburn struck a deal with movie mogul Louis B. Mayer that had one primary condition-that she, and she alone, would play Tracy Lord in the film. James Stewart and Cary Grant, two of the top leading men of the day, joined Ms. Hepburn in the "rest-is-history" production. Sixteen years later and musicalized by Cole Porter, the retitled play became a 1956 film entertainment entitled, "High Society". The film musi- cal starred Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and the future H.R.H. of Monaco, Grace Kelley. Cole Porter placed eight new songs in the hit film and added "Well, Did You Evah?" from his 1939 Broadway musical, "BuBarry Was A Lady" in the ninth slot. ACT in San Francisco staged the first theatrical production of "High Society" in 1997. With Arthur Kopit's book (based on both the play and the screen musical) and various Cole Porter hits taken from previous produc- tions, it was this musical that opened at the St. James Theatre in New York City. Arthur Kopit made an additional change to the book for a production of "High Society" that opened July 21, 2000, at Stages St. Louis. The "St. Louis Alternative" is presented in this West Valley Light Opera production and we wish to express our appreciation to both Stages St. Louis and Tams- Witmark Music Library for the ability to offer it to you. Now, sit back and enjoy the effervescent score of Cole Porter, the witty book of Arthur Kopit, and the romantic stories that are "High Society". -Stephen D. Maddox, Director

DID YOU KNOW ... - that from 1923 until his death in 1964, Cole Porter has provided Broadway with more than a score of top-hit musicals, writing both words and music? Among his best-known stage works are "The Greenwich Village Follies", "Panama Hattie", "Mexican Hayride", "Leave It To Me", & "Kiss Me, Kate". Equally success- ful in films, his Hollywood hits include ''Anything Goes", "Rosalie", & "Something To Shout About". Cole Porter's songs, "Night and Day", "Begin The Beguine", "You'reThe Top", & "In The Still Of The Night" have never left the lists of top favorites. - that these Cole Porter songs were not written for this musical? Here's where they originated: "Ridin' High" - Red, Hot & Blue- 1936 "Throwing A Ball Tonight" - Panama Hattie - 1966 "" & "It's All Right With Me" - Can Can - 1953 "She's Got That Thing" - 50 Million Frenchmen - 1929 "Once Upon A Time" - All-American - 1971 "Let's Misbehave" - Anything Goes - 1927 "Just One Of Those Things" -Jubilee - 1935 "Well, Did You Evah!" - DuBarry 1.%sA Lady - 1956

Though she has continued in the theater almost nonstop ever since, she took time out to raise 2 very talented children, Robin & Rick, who also share her love of music and performance. She has participated in over 180 different shows as Vocal and/or Musical Director or pianist and sometimes "all of the above" as she did for our last season's production of "The Boy Friend". Other credits include SCP's productions of "Into The Woods", "Anything Goes", ''A Chorus Line" and "Little Shop of Horrors". Now that she's retired, she is ecstatic with her new job as first- time Grandma to Makena Soleil Reynolds.

Meg Miller-Steiger (aka Ebenhahn) (Choreographer) Meg returns to our staff after a long absence. She earned her BA in Theatre Arts from Chico State and has compiled a long list of theatrical credits, including productions of "Bye Bye Birdie", "Guy & Dolls", "Oliver", "Brigadoon", "South Pacific", "Anything Goes", "The Boy Friend", "La Boheme", "The Nutcracker" and many other dance pro- ductions too numerous to mention. Her most recent stage appearance was as Reno Sweeny in ''Anything Goes". Her hobbies include scrap booking, daughters Hayley and Chelsea and of course, husband, Mike, to plays Edmund, the Butler in this production.

Stephen C. His long list of credits also include our productions of "Joseph ... Dreamcoat" , "They're Playing Our Song", "Crazy For You", "Nunsense II", "Gypsy", "Meet Me in St. Louis" and many more. Stephen's most recent film credits were on the Gumby movie, but he also been involved with special effects for "Plant of Dinosaurs", "Birdy" & "Demonhunter". It's always a delight to see what Stephen's concepts will bring to our stage next.

14 Michael Glenn Munoz (Lighting Designer) Mike's lighting designs have been seen in ten other WVLO productions, two of them in last season's "Phantom" and "Will Rogers Follies". His special effects have also been seen in "Joseph ..Dreamcoat", "Crazy For You", "Nunsense II" and "Camelot" aswell as several SDG productions on this stage, including the most recent, "Sweet Charity". Michael has also worked with SCPL and in SF with Starlight Produc- tions of "Broadway Babies". This summer he was also proud to take part in "Help Is On The Way VI-ColePorteriA Musical Celebration" at the Palace of Fine Arts presented by the Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation. He earned his BA in Fine Arts at SJSU where he minored in dance. We extend our sympathy in the loss of your mother, Mike, we will all miss her.

Linda Wallitner (Production Stage Manager) Linda started her theatrical ca- reer in 1961, came to WVLO in 1997, and has worked most shows on the technical staff ever since. She co-managed last season's "Phantom" and "Will Rogers Follies" with her husband, Bob, and this season she becomes the Resident Production Stage Man- ager for WVLO. She was last seen on stage in SDG's productions of "Brigadoon" and "Caba- ret" (which she co-produced). Her favorite roles include Bloody Mary in "South Pacific", Nikki in"Sweet Charity" and Housekeeper in "Man of La Mancha". Linda is thrilled to be back stage managing because she loves working so closely with the staff, cast and crew at WVLO.

Bob Wallitner (Stage Manager) This is Bob's third production in this position for WVLO. He co-managed last season's "Phantom" and "Will Rogers Follies" and this season he'll serve as Resident Stage Manager for WVLO. Bob has worked on the technical staff on many of the shows during his four seasons with us. He was Assistant Stage Manager for "The Boy Friend" and "They're Playing Our Song". His many other credits include technical staff positions on this stage with SDG. Bob is very happy that he got involved with the 'magic of theatre' and enjoysworking closelywith the wonderful people he has met.

15 Judy Mecum (Costumer) Judy's last costuming position on our staff was for "They're Playing Our Song", but she has assisted and sewed for so many of our productions, it's hard to keep track. She has earned her BA in Creative Arts at SJSU and has been using those creative arts to design and build a myriad of costumes for G&S and WVLO. As a Travel Counselor for Carlson Wagonlit Travel, her hob- bies include her family (husband, Hugh, a daughter and 2 grandchildren) travel, sewing, reading and archeology. The highlight of her busy career was costuming WVLO's "The King & I" with her brother-in- law directing. Her ambition is to make costumes that reappear in hundreds of productions.

Chris Fultz (Props) Chris returns to our staff from last season's "Phantom" for which she did props, too. She be- gan her stage career in 1991 in "Merry Widow" and then moved to working on the stage crew. Her first production was "Singin' In The Rain" and she couldn't have chosen a tougher show to work crew; she spent all her time mop- ping up the water that was splashed on the stage! She picked easier shows after that "Meet Me In St. Louis" and ''A Funny Thing ... Forum". A mother of two, her hobbies are reading and pho- tography and she provides computer sales support for CSR.
