Legally Blonde: Introduction
Being true to yourself never goes out of style! WINNER BEST NEW MUSICAL 2011 OLIVIER AWARD EDUCATION KIT AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE SEASON • SYDNEY LYRIC LegallyBlonde.com.au facebook.com/ legallyblondemusical @legallyblondeoz Legally Blonde: INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION This teacher’s guide has been developed as a teaching tool to assist teachers who are bringing their students to see the show. This guide is based on Camp Broadway’s StageNOTES, conceived for the original Broadway musical adaptation of Amanda Brown’s 2001 novel and the film released that same year, and has been adapted for use within the UK and Australia. The Australian Education Pack is intended to offer some pathways into the production, and focuses on some of the topics covered in Legally Blonde which may interest students and teachers. It is not an exhaustive analysis of the musical or the production, but instead aims to offer a variety of stimuli for debate, discussion and practical exploration. It is anticipated that the Education Pack will be best utilised after a group of students have seen the production with their teacher, and can engage in an informed discussion based on a sound awareness of the musical. We hope that the information provided here will both enhance the live theatre experience and provide readers with information they may not otherwise have been able to access. Legally Blonde is an uplifting, energising, feel-good show and with that in mind we hope this pack will be enjoyed through equally energising and enjoyable practical work in the classroom and drama studio. 1 Legally Blonde: INTRODUCTION LEgally Blonde Education Pack CONTENTS PAGE INTODUCTION 1. -

Versatile actor Alan Cumming has performed a wide variety of roles on stage, screen, Image courtesy Angela Brinskele. and television. He has earned numerous awards for his acting and also for his support of glbtq causes. The younger son of a forester and a homemaker, Alan Cumming was born January 27, 1965 in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. He spent his first year in the neighboring town of Dunkeld, where his father worked on a large estate. The family then moved to Fassfern on the west coast of the country, and three years later settled on the east coast, on another estate near Carnoustie. As a child growing up on an isolated estate he lacked playmates--his only sibling was six years older than he--and so he amused himself by acting out stories of his own invention. His cast, he recalled, consisted of "me and my dog. And imaginary others." After graduating from Carnoustie High School, Cumming worked for a year at a publishing company in Dundee, initially in the fiction department and then interviewing bands for a pop culture magazine called TOPS. Cumming then enrolled in the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. While attending the academy Cumming met and married fellow student Hilary Lyon. After graduating in 1985, Cumming and a friend, Forbes Masson, developed a stand-up comedy act that proved extremely popular. -

'Kinky Boots' Sets April 4 Broadway Opening - NYTimes.com AUGUST 15, 2012, 3:13 PM ‘Kinky Boots’ Sets April 4 Broadway Opening By PATRICK HEALY "Kinky Boots," one of the most anticipated musicals of the new Broadway season, with Cyndi Laupermaking her debut as a songwriter for the stage, will begin performances on March 5, 2013, at the Al Hirschfeld Theater and open on April 4, the producers announced on Wednesday. Based on a 2005 British filmabout a shoe factory heir who enlists a drag queen to help save the family business, "Kinky Boots" will star the Tony Award nominee Stark Sands ("Journey's End," "American Idiot") as the scion Charlie and Billy Porter (Belize in the Off Broadway revival of "Angels in America") as the resourceful Lola. The show's book writer is Harvey Fierstein, who won a Tony for his book for "La Cage aux Folles" and was nominated in the category last season for the Broadway musical "Newsies." Ms. Lauper, a Grammy-winning pop icon of the 1980s, has written the music and lyrics for the production, which will have an out-of-town run in Chicago this fall. Jerry Mitchell will direct, and the lead producers are Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. Like "Kinky Boots," most of the new Broadway musicals expected this season are inspired by movies or books; the others include "Bring It On," "Rebecca," "A Christmas Story," "Matilda," "Diner," and "Hands on a Hardbody." http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/15/kinky-boots-sets-april-4-broadway-opening/?pagewanted=print[8/16/2012 9:52:02 AM] Religious Roots Tangle With the Groovy ’60s - The New York Times August 15, 2012 THEATER REVIEW Religious Roots Tangle With the Groovy ’60s By JASON ZINOMAN Wearing a bushy beard and the absent-minded expression of a father preoccupied with work at the dinner table, Eric Anderson, who plays the Jewish singer Shlomo Carlebach in the bio-musical “Soul Doctor,” appears smaller than life. -
Cole Porter: the Social Significance of Selected Love Lyrics of the 1930S
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Unisa Institutional Repository Cole Porter: the social significance of selected love lyrics of the 1930s by MARILYN JUNE HOLLOWAY submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject of ENGLISH at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: PROFESSOR IA RABINOWITZ November 2010 DECLARATION i SUMMARY This dissertation examines selected love lyrics composed during the 1930s by Cole Porter, whose witty and urbane music epitomized the Golden era of American light music. These lyrics present an interesting paradox – a man who longed for his music to be accepted by the American public, yet remained indifferent to the social mores of the time. Porter offered trenchant social commentary aimed at a society restricted by social taboos and cultural conventions. The argument develops systematically through a chronological and contextual study of the influences of people and events on a man and his music. The prosodic intonation and imagistic texture of the lyrics demonstrate an intimate correlation between personality and composition which, in turn, is supported by the biographical content. KEY WORDS: Broadway, Cole Porter, early Hollywood musicals, gays and musicals, innuendo, musical comedy, social taboos, song lyrics, Tin Pan Alley, 1930 film censorship ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I should like to thank Professor Ivan Rabinowitz, my supervisor, who has been both my mentor and an unfailing source of encouragement; Dawie Malan who was so patient in sourcing material from libraries around the world with remarkable fortitude and good humour; Dr Robin Lee who suggested the title of my dissertation; Dr Elspa Hovgaard who provided academic and helpful comment; my husband, Henry Holloway, a musicologist of world renown, who had to share me with another man for three years; and the man himself, Cole Porter, whose lyrics have thrilled, and will continue to thrill, music lovers with their sophistication and wit. -
