Garber also excelled at etching and taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over forty years. Daniel Garber photographs, negatives, and exhibition catalogs, circa 1900s-1945, consist of exhibition catalogs, portrait and other photographs, negatives, slides, and glass plate negatives. - Page 3 - Daniel Garber photographs, negatives, and exhibition catalogs Biographical/Historical Note Daniel Garber (1880-1958) was a painter best known for his landscapes and scenic paintings of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Garber also excelled at etching and taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over forty years. Daniel Garber (1880-1958) was born in 1880 in Indiana and studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati in Ohio (1897) before moving to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1899-1905). Garber met Mary Franklin, a fellow art student, in Philadelphia and they were married. After traveling through Europe, the couple returned to the United States in 1907 and settled in Cuttalossa, just downriver from Lumberville in Solebury Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Garber's style combined realism and fantasy, precise draftsmanship and decorative technique, emblazoning all in vibrant, shimmering colors. A landscape artist, Garber was best known for his paintings of Bucks County woods and quarries. To a greater extent than many of his New Hope colleagues, Garber also achieved recognition as a figure painter. A leading instructor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for over forty years, Garber influenced younger generations of painters, as well. Garber died in 1958. Bibliography: James A. Scope and Content Note Daniel Garber photographs, negatives, and exhibition catalogs, circa 1900s-1945, consist of exhibition catalogs, portrait and other photographs, negatives, slides, and glass plate negatives. The exhibition catalogs are from the 1930s and 1940s. The slides are of his artwork. The glass plate negatives contain at least one image of his artwork, possibly some landscape images he used as reference material, and some people. The photographs are of Garber, including four portraits of him, and other people. The negatives contain images of farm animals, artwork, and people. A more detailed finding aid, biographical note, or inventory for this collection may be available on-site. The second volume deals with the paintings of artists born between 1850 and 1910. The documented catalogue of the Corcoran's American paintings carries forward the project, initiated by former Director Hermann Warner Williams, Jr., of providing a series of defini• tive publications of the Gallery's considerable collection of American art. The Gallery intends to continue with other volumes devoted to contemporary American painting, sculpture, drawings, watercolors and prints. In recent years the growing interest in and concern for American paint• ing has become apparent.

    Painting America Peter Hurd (Roswell, NM, 1904–1984) Evening in the Sierras 1938–39 Egg tempera on gessoed panel NA diploma presentation, February 3, 1947 Hurd studied privately with N. C. Wyeth, the well-known American realist painter, father of Andrew and Henriette and grandfather of Jamie. As it happens, Hurd married Henriette, and the couple had three children together. Hurd had attended military school as a boy and enrolled at West Point but, having always loved art and painting, decided to leave halfway through to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. That decision was quite radical, especially for the early 1920s. This is the story of a person who had an inner desire to do something, followed his dream, and ended up not only living the rest of his life as an artist but also !nding his wife and family in the process. Bellows submitted the work as his Academy portrait, a gesture that perhaps signi!es the artists’ shared ideas about portraiture and representation.
