Mount Kisco was founded in 1850, incorporated in 1875 and became a coterminous Village/Town in 1978 when its residents voted in favor of their own destiny and “seceded” from the towns of Bedford and New Castle, which shared governance over the village. Unofficially, Kisco (or Kisko as it was generally spelled in prior centuries) traces its origins to the early 1600’s when European settlers moved to the area. The origin of the name Kisco itself is not known with 100 percent certainty, but it is generally thought to be a adaptation of the Indian word Cisqua. Words of an unknown foreign tongue often sound romantic to the listener and Cisqua/ Kisko proves no exception. Cisqua means “muddy place” - a good description of this area geologically rife with underground streams. Through the years, Mount Kisco has played a vital role in our nation’s history. Kisco was not only a Redcoat base for British attacks on Bedford and Pound Ridge, it was also the place Rochambeau billeted his troops on the way to join Washington’s army. Washington may or may not have slept here, but he was here on at least one occasion to discuss strategy. Kisco contributed more than men, money and munitions to the Civil War. Our village also played a significant part in the construction of the first armored vehicle of its type, the Monitor, which defeated the Confederate ship Merrimack and ushered in a new era of naval warfare. The locust pins and heavy wooden braces needed to support the massive weight of the Monitor’s iron turret were shaped in the shop of Jesse Crozier which was on West Main Street (Route 133) just west of Orchard Road. The July 1969 moon landing was not only a giant leap for mankind, it was a proud moment for Mount Kisco as Curtis Instruments provided parts which contributed to making the landing possible. Mount Kisco’s history is arguably the richest in the area. Much of our physical past has been preserved for present and future generations. To savor Mount Kisco’s past, use your imagination. The next time you’re in the parking area of Northern Westchester Hospital, see a meeting place mapped by Rochambeau’s cartographer; pass the Independent Fire House and see the cattle drives down Lexington Avenue and see horses racing around a track - but not in the aisles of Target. Fox Lane High School Student Entrepreneurial Scholarship Winner We could not be more proud of our 2017 MKCC Scholarship Winner, Cameron Summers. Known to her friends as Cammie, she impressed us with her dedication to volunteerism in the community with involvement in the Appalachia Service Project, Interfaith Coalition Emergency Shelter Program and Disaster Relief through UMCORP. Cammie’s honor roll ranking and awards in science and technology are equally impressive. She even found time, as a young entrepreneur, to create and sell her own hand-made jewelry at craft fairs and offer her musical talents for violin lessons as a private tutor. Cammie currently attends Binghamton University at the Watson School of Engineering with a goal of a degree in mechanical engineering. We are thrilled to be able to support this brand of motivation and drive within the local community. Leonard Park and Fox Park are two of the more expansive recreational facilities offered for the enjoyment of its residents. Leonard Park, known for its beautiful Tea House set alongside Wallace Pond, creates a tranquil atmosphere for the entrance to this well-loved and utilized Village Park. Located on Route 172 (So. Bedford Road), Leonard Park covers an estimated 120 acres and includes a children’s playground, four tennis courts, a basketball court; softball, hardball and little league fields, and even a Frisbie Golf course. In the summer season, residents join to enjoy the Memorial Pool facility. A multi-purpose room at the Tea House are available for rent. Fox Park, located alongside the Fox Senior Center just off Carpenter Avenue is a two-acre park of fun for softball and basketball. In each hamlet, an active park is available for year ’round activities and home each summer to a day camp. The two passive parks, Indian Hill Park, accessible from Paddock Lane in Bedford Village, and Beaver Dam Sanctuary Park, off Harris Road, Bedford Hills, offer walking trails and natural areas. Picnicking is allowed on the Village Green in Bedford Village and at Rosaforte Park in Bedford Hills. Rosaforte Park also offers a baseball/ softball field. Highways and Byways The Saw Mill River Parkway is an essential north-south route that passes through the western limits of Mount Kisco and offers both north and southbound access at Kisco Avenue, Croton Avenue and West Main Street (Route 133). Getting to and from the Taconic Parkway is just a matter of taking a tree lined drive on West Main Street (Route 133) down from Mount Kisco to Millwood, where there are both north and southbound entrances and exits for the Taconic. Interstate 684, which leads to points north and south, is accessible from Mount Kisco via South Bedford Road (Route 172). This will lead you to Exit 4 of 1-684, Mount Kisco/Bedford Exit. (The Saw Mill Parkway North also turns into 1-684 five miles north of Mount Kisco).
Westchester County Airport The Westchester County Airport is owned by the County of Wsstchester in the state of New York. The airport (HPN) is located in the towns of Harrison, North Castle and the village of Rye Brook. The airport is conveniently located 5 miles east of White Plains, 10 miles south of Mount Kisco and about 30 miles north of Manhattan. It has been operated as a public use airport since 1945. VILLAGE/ TOWN OF MOUNT KISCO Parking Permit Inormation Types of parking permits available in the Village of Mount Kisco: Handicapped Parking Permits - temporary and permanent, can be obtained in the Tax Receiver’s Offi ce. You must provide a doctor’s note, which will determine whether a temporary or permanent permit will be issued. The temporary handicapped permits are valid for one year. There is no fee for this service. Commuter Parking Permits are available on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis and are valid from January 1 until December 31 of each year. They are also available in pro-rated quarterly installments. Mount Kisco residents are given priority. You will need a copy of your current driver’s license and registration to accompany the application. Permit parking users are to park only in areas designated. “Permit Parking Only” Daily/Monthly Parking Permits - are also available. The fees are $10.00 for Daily Parking ($5.00 for Village Resident Senior Citizens). The permit holder must have the parking permit displayed on the front dashboard when in use. This permit may only be used at a meter beyond a one-hour time limit (at any parking lot). Merchant/Employee Permits can be issued to businesses and shared by multiple employees one motorist at a time. They are also available in pro-rated quarterly installments. There are numerous spaces available in most parking lots. They are available for purchase at the Tax Receiver’s Offi ce at Village Hall. M Pay-To-Park is a mobile application that can be used to pay for parking at all municipal parking lots in Mount Kisco.
