Annual Parish Meeting This is taking place on Monday 9th May at 7.30 in the Parish Centre. Please join us and hear what we have been doing over the last year. You will have the opportunity to ask us questions too. We will also be giving out grant cheques to successful applicants, as well as revealing the Redbourn Community Champion 2016. We look forward to seeing you. Refreshments will be served.

6000 new houses in Redbourn? You may have read in the local press that MP, Mike Penning, has called for 6000 new houses to be built to the east of Hemel Hempstead in Redbourn Ward. That’s three times the number of houses currently in Redbourn village. Our own MP, Peter Lilley, is backing St Albans District Council’s proposed plans for 2500 new houses here. Whilst MPs have no direct influence on local planning matters, it does seem that housing development is far more important to politicians right now than protecting the Green Belt. Personally I would like to see our MPs giving more time and energy to national plans for new garden cities and the “northern powerhouse” and leaving our local Green Belt alone. As well as being the “green lungs” of London, it prevents urban sprawl, and is also top quality agricultural land, which, of course, is where our food comes from.

Strategic Local Plan (SLP) St Albans District Council recently had a public consultation on their proposed new local development plan. The Plan includes 1500 houses in Redbourn Parish Green Belt. Redbourn Parish Council submitted a response, prepared for us by Troy Planning, arguing that the proposed Plan is not sound or legal. This was also the view of many other groups. It is now up to the District Council to decide whether to keep the Plan as is, amend the Plan in the light of the consultation (unlikely), or scrap the Plan altogether (highly unlikely). As I write, the current timetable is to submit the Plan to the Government Inspector for public examination in the Autumn. If she/he approves the Plan, it will be adopted next year. I suppose you could argue that the Plan has its benefits in that it will bring much needed affordable housing to the area as well as new primary schools and a secondary school (and hopefully the roads would be improved to cater for all the extra traffic). However, I worry that Redbourn’s future generations will find themselves living in a sprawling metropolis, effectively part of Greater London. Redbourn Neighbourhood Plan Work continues on this - the village development plan that will be decided by Redbourn residents rather than the District Council. We had a very successful ‘Lego Event’ recently. For more details see page 6. Beating the Bounds This is taking place on Sunday 1st May. In days-gone-by this was led by the vicar on horseback and the local boys were beaten on the parish boundaries to reinforce their memories of its location. Fortunately Beating the Bounds is not a legal requirement today! Instead it is an enjoyable walk in the parish countryside. Many thanks to Kate Bretherton for keeping this part of the tradition going. See page 24 if you want take part. Long Cutt play area is having a makeover!! For some time now, the Parish Council have been looking at rejuvenating the Long Cutt Play area and now, with funding from S106 money from St Albans District Council (money received from developers when they build and held by the District Council for leisure use) and match funding by Redbourn Parish Council, we are delighted to be able to move this project forward. We propose to install new, exciting and more challenging equipment to cover a wider age range whilst keeping some of the existing pieces, ie birds nest swing, the baby swings and the rocking horse – these pieces will be refurbished. New surfacing will also be laid making it a lot safer. Here is an idea of the new equipment:

COMMONS COMMENTS Cllr Colin O’Donovan, Chairman of Commons & Open Spaces Committee

THE COMMON The overflow car park is now open to allow access for the cricket season. The only access to the Common overflow car park is via the car park at the Cricket Club. Please do not drive up the kerbs onto any part of the Common – it causes damage which then has to be funded by the Council.

Some erosion is still happening to the Common caused by lorries and car and so we’re monitoring this and adding wooden posts to protect the areas where we can. Please could you be mindful of this and use the car parks provided. Grass cutting of the Common has now begun. The Ver Valley Society organised a group of volunteers to do a litter pick and tidy up of the River Red at the Moor (by the Willow trees).

A working party has been set up to investigate options to alleviate parking pressures around the Common. There are a few events being held on the Common this year so please note the following dates: th 11 June – Scout Fete 17th June – Folk on the Common 3rd July – Fete du Velo 5th November – Fireworks Display

CUMBERLAND GARDENS The new gates at the High street entrance have now been fitted and they are being left in the open position at all times at the moment. This arrangement is constantly under review. The works to maintain and protect the front wall, by the time you read this, should be complete.

PLAY AREAS East Common This is a well-used play area and we are monitoring this especially the mound tunnel. Long Cutt Works to upgrade this play area will soon be under way and should be completed in time for the May half term. See opposite page for more details. Flamsteadbury Lane As mentioned in the last issue of REDBOURN NEWS, we intend to update this play area at some time in the future and would like your views.

REDBOURN NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN update The Working Party has been very busy, mainly dealing with the proposed sites for housing, but also gathering evidence for policies to be included in the Neighbourhood Plan. As Becky Firth, the parish council’s Community Officer writes below, we have had a good response from families to the consultation event held on 5th April. While children worked on building houses and other structures in Lego, parents were able to look at the maps of the sites and complete consultation forms on where they thought any new housing should go. Working Party volunteers have been meeting with landowners who have put their sites forward for housing or other development. The Parish Council has withdrawn the Greyhound Meadow site from consideration, but a new piece of land to the north of the village has now been put forward to the Planning Authority by its owners, and the Neighbourhood Plan must now assess this site. Our Planning Consultant will do an assessment on its viability, but in the meantime we included it on the list of potential sites at the consultation event on 5th April. When we have a full assessment, we will put details on the website and the Facebook page, and invite comments. There will also be future consultation events, and we will have the opportunity to ask people what they think about all the sites. If any other sites are submitted we have to go through the same process with them. This does mean that, although we are aiming to have completed our Plan as quickly as possible, if a site is submitted at the last minute we are obliged to consider it and this will cause some delay. At the next Neighbourhood Plan meeting in May our Planning Consultant, Navigus, will help us assess feedback on the sites and move towards allocating sites for developments of less than 200 homes over the next 20 years. We will be doing more work on housing needs in the village, although the evidence we have at the moment is that we need more starter homes, homes for people to ‘downsize’ to (releasing the larger family homes), homes for families and sheltered housing for the ageing population. This is a work in progress, and we will keep you informed. We also hope to meet with the Local Education Authority in the next few weeks to seek clarification on new Government rules on Academies and Free Schools. If more school places are required in Redbourn, the changes to Government guidelines mean that they may have to be brought forward by organisations other than the LEA. Two sites have been made available by the owners as possible locations for a school, but we need to get them assessed to see if they are suitable. LEGO EVENT (Neighbourhood Plan consultation)

We had an amazing turnout for the Neighbourhood Plan Lego event on 5th April. The Parish Centre was packed out with families for the whole afternoon - all playing with Lego! Melvyn from Awesome Engineers brought along 3 different types of houses for the children to build and was on hand to assist and encourage them in their model making. Alongside the more structured house building, there was also a separate free play area so children could make their own creations from a huge range of Lego pieces.

Aside from all the fun and creativity there was a more serious side to the event as it allowed us to talk with families about the Neighbourhood Plan and get ideas and feedback on development in Redbourn.

Communication doesn’t end with this event though. We want to keep up a dialogue with residents as it is a plan to be decided by the whole community not just a few. We see it as a great opportunity for us to shape development in the village ourselves and for residents to have a real say in the future of Redbourn. As many of you from the event will realise, site 8 is a new site which we haven’t even had chance to properly locate on the Neighbourhood Plan map yet and still needs to be assessed by our Planning Consultant.

There are further discussions to be had with stakeholders, landowners and developers with regards to site viabilities, housing type and number and community facilities. We will continue to share this information with the village via our Neighbourhood Plan Facebook page and our website http://redbournplan.org.uk.

“Come and see the Orchids”

Sunday 19 June 2016 - 10.00 am Friends of the Nickey Line and the Ver Valley Society are holding a joint walk for the third year to view orchids at two sites. Starting at the car park on Redbourn Common, this 5 mile circular walk will visit a bee orchid site on the Nickey Line near the M1 Bridge, and also visit the chalk slopes on the side of Hill where we hope to see pyramidal orchids and bee orchids. “Live, Learn, Laugh” Members have been enjoying an eclectic mix of presentations including a costumed Martin Sirot-Smith as Lord Washington of Sulgrave Manor, who explained the symbolism of our Christmas traditions, plus talks on Chocolate, Charles Dickens, and Body Language. Our Interest Groups involve members in a wide range of activities, enabling them to live up to the U3A motto above. For example, the Ukulele Group have participated in a Uke Fest, the Footpath Walking Group completed their 70th walk, the Explorers Group visited the Old Signal Box in St Albans and Wren Churches in London, Grumpy Old Women have monthly grumbles, the Solo Group are enjoying a busy social calendar and the French Group are off to watch a French comedy. Lots more is going on and new groups reflecting the interests of an ever-increasing membership include Line Dancing, German and Geography. Thanks to Redbourn Bowls Club some members have recently enjoyed a short taster course in Short Mat Bowls. We are very proud of our Knit & Stitch Group who raised a total of £637.40 from the sale of items they made. This sum was shared between Alzheimer’s Society and Macmillan Cancer Care. The group is now busy making hats, gloves and blankets for the Premature Baby Unit at the & Dunstable Hospital. Up and coming events include a Canal trip, a Solo Group holiday to Jersey, a day trip to Kelmscott, a 90th Birthday Party in honour of HM The Queen, and a holiday to the West Midlands.

REDBOURN TENNIS CLUB

Membership time Redbourn Tennis Club is affiliated to the Lawn Tennis Association and is run by volunteers. It is a hidden gem in the heart of the village of Redbourn. There are four hard courts and a small clubhouse. This is village tennis at its best with friendly coaching and access to any level of player. The Club prides itself on being relaxed and is keen to encourage new members. We have been awarded Clubmark status by the LTA which means we meet the standards set by the LTA. We keep our membership fee as low as possible to try and make tennis accessible to all. To use the courts an annual membership fee is payable in advance. The annual membership fee permits members to play at any time without the need for court fees - subject to the club rules, club sessions and matches. Membership is open to all ages. We are launching a new junior session this year which is available for members. Saturday mornings are a ‘Pay and Play’ session and will run from 10.00am. The cost is £2.00 per session payable on the day Adult sessions take place on Thursday evenings from 6pm, Friday mornings from 09.30am followed by coffee and Sunday mornings from 10.00am. We also have an adult Cardio tennis session on Tuesday mornings from 10.00am. If you want to come and try a session contact us via the web site. We will be taking part in the Great British Tennis Weekend which is a national promotion by the LTA, on May 15th between 2-4pm. The event raised approximately £2,000, which will go towards our funds for an all-weather football pitch at Redbourn Leisure Centre, and the replacement all-weather surface for the Bowling Green, which will be needed in a few years’ time. REDBOURN FUN RUN

SUNDAY MAY 22ND

The successful Redbourn Fun Run is back for a second year. A great opportunity to get involved whatever your motivation or challenge. From only £5 per person you can get fit and raise money for local causes whilst enjoying a fabulous day out with you family. We are excited to announce that this year we have added a 3km race, combined with the 1km and 5km, so now there is a distance to suitable for everyone. All 3 races will be held within the safe environment of the Redbourn leisure centre fields, making it safe for both runners and supporters. Every runner will receive a bespoke Redbourn Fun Run medal and there will be trophies for the winners of each race. The whole event will run from 10am-3pm, with the first race starting at 10am. After the races we have plenty of activities and stalls for you all to enjoy: sports, dance, craft activities, bouncy castle, fairground rides, food and drink. All proceeds from this event will go to Redbourn Infant and Junior schools and the local Hertfordshire charity, Up On Downs, which supports families of children with Down’s Syndrome. REDBOURN IN BLOOM LOCAL COMPETITIONS

Judging of Best Front Garden, Shop, Business, , School, Community Building, Allotment and Sheltered Housing will take place at the end of June. However, as we try to take a look at all the front gardens around the village, short-listing for this category begins several weeks before this, so you may like to start preparing now! Don’t forget when planning your summer planting, Redbourn in Bloom members benefit from 10% discount at Herts. Garden Centre.

ANGLIA IN BLOOM

The regional judges will visit Redbourn in mid-July. Our suggested colour scheme for planting in the High St. area is rose-pink, blue and white. We are trying to encourage all local businesses and residents to put on an even more colourful display this year. The judges’ tour also includes the Common, schools, some of our community buildings and allotments. We gain points for a clean and tidy environment, community support and participation, and business sponsorship. Please help Redbourn to do well – and maybe regain gold! HORTICULTURAL SHOW – SAT. 10TH SEPT.

Our annual Show at the Village Hall includes displays of home-grown fruit, vegetables, flowers, house-plants, flower arrangements, crafts, home-baking and preserves. There are sections for children and novices, and new entrants are always welcome. Please note the date in your diary, and start thinking about what you might be able to enter. “Meet Your Councillor”

THE CHANGING FACE OF REDBOURN 1950 -2016 By Cllr. Dennis Bigham

From the 1950 to now, Redbourn has had a great number of changes that I can remember. Growing up in the village in the 1950s, I saw a great number of these changes.

We had some ten that were open. Now we have only one in the high street, one on the common and one at Church End plus the Chequers - that shows the decline of pubs. Our railway line was also in decline in the 1950s but taken over for the transport of breeze block material.

Redbourn was a self-supporting community. We had three cobblers, a blacksmith, three garages, a baker, four grocers, a post office, a Chemist, an outfitters, a paper shop, two butchers, hair dressers, two green grocers, a fish seller, two sweet tobacconists and ice cream shops plus a bank. We had some six churches and chapels, and two schools - the girls on the common and the boys at the bottom now next to our parish centre.

The estates that were being built were Tassel Hall and Snatchup that covered a large amount of space in and around Lybury Lane and a great play area for us. The M1 was being cut out and again this was a great place to go and look at what was going on with great earth moving machines going up and down the area to the west of Redbourn.

We had a dairy that delivered milk each day (that I worked for first thing from 0600-0700) plus the baker and Drapers fruit and veg all delivered to your door. Halls the butcher delivered to your door at the weekend.

Redbourn had a number of factories in the village that employed a great number of Redbourn people from small engineering units, small workshops round the back of the Village Hall, Crown Street, Mercers at the bottom of the street, the last large one was Broke Bond that had a tea and a coffee factory at the back of the cricketer’s pub. I left the Village in 1965 to go into the Army and on my return in 1970 found a great many changes. The cricket pavilion had been moved from outside the Bees’ Nest to the middle of the common plus a large housing estate had been built on fish street farm fields now called The Park.

Redbourn is no longer a self-supporting Village. It’s now a dormitory village with persons having to go elsewhere to work but for the small estate on the old Mercers site, with a number of small units employing some 20-40 persons, and offices that have sprung up in all sorts of places.

Since last writing in these pages I am delighted to thank eleven new members for stepping forward in pursuit of and in recognition of the increasing need to support our community and particularly those who are lonely, vulnerable and mobility challenged. These new members are covering the important roles of trustee, couriers, minibus and car drivers and administration of car insurance records. In this publication, and others, since last Autumn we sought new active members and we are pleased our plea did not fall on deaf ears.

Spring has sprung which heralds longer days and better weather for all of us to get out and about more. We are grateful to The Parish Council for again providing a generous Grant towards the cost of a new minibus which we will be acquiring within the next twelve months or so. One of our Trustees, Dennis Bigham, has established a working group to assess the detailed specification for the replacement. The Trustees have been working hard on a plan for the future sustainability and growth of our charity and we expect to be holding an EGM fairly soon to ratify our plan and thereafter to publish the details to the whole village. REDBOURN VILLAGE MUSEUM

Redbourn Museum on the Radio In late February, the Parish Council were contacted by one of the producers from Three Counties Radio because they wished to feature Redbourn on their Saturday morning Treasure Quest programme. And so it was arranged that Pauline and John Ridgwell would meet the presenters in the roving radio car th on February 27 , to help solve one of the clues, which was along the lines of: Panamas and boaters were made here and fine fabrics too….??? Luckily (as the clue was sprung on us live on air) Pauline was able to explain to listeners that Lady Charlotte Bowes Lyon had a hat factory built in Redbourn and this is now the Village Hall. As a result, many Redbourn villagers were involved in straw plaiting and hat making. The special straw was grown locally and according to the 1841 census, 51% of the Redbourn women were Plaiters so this was a thriving cottage industry. The finished plait, including that made by children as young as 4 years old, was either fashioned into hats in the village factory or sent to straw plait markets in Dunstable and Luton. The reference to fine fabrics in the clue is because John Woollam built a silk mill on The Common in

1857, now the site of Redbourn Village Museum which occupies Silk Mill House, the former home of the manager of the mill.

Then the radio car zoomed off to follow the trail of the

next clue, via “George Bernard Shaw country” at Ayot St. Lawrence and finding the “Treasure” at Benington Lordship!

REDBOURN HOUSE PORTICO HAS COME HOME The museum committee is very pleased to report that it has acquired the portico which once formed part of Redbourn House. A fitting acquisition in the year of the Queen's 90th birthday. The Bowes-Lyon family has long been connected with Redbourn House, going back to when Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was a small girl and would spend time here. Redbourn House stood near the bottom of the High Street, now the site of Gertrude Peake Place, and was finally demolished in the 1950's. Its front portico was taken to St. Albans and became adjoined to the front of the St. Albans Museum at Hatfied Road. With that Museum now in the process of being moved, we have been able to bring it back to Redbourn Museum, where it now lies in the garden. It will be rebuilt in the garden when a suitable site has been decided. These are exciting times for the vill age as part of our Royal heritage has returned. We hope to raise funds for the restoration of the portico. Geoff Webb

The building at 63 High Street, Redbourn has been our Village Hall for nearly a 100 years! The main old building was originally built (£650) as a Hat factory in 1861 by Lady Bowes-Lyon and leased to Vyse & Co Hat Manufactures from Luton. The large windows, which can still be seen upstairs, were essential for the fine work of sewing straw plait. The Hat factory stayed in operation until at least 1909 and the disused factory was purchased by the Redbourn Parish Council in 1921 (£800) becoming Redbourn’s main Community Hall. In 1948 a row of C17th cottages along the High St were demolished and the face of RVH was transformed.

RVH was the home of Redbourn Parish Council until the opening of the new Parish Centre in Jan 2011. Very recent improvements have been the installation of free WiFi and a new Website for up to date “What’s on”. RVH is a registered charity and the Redbourn Village Hall Management Committee (RVHMC) is a group of local volunteers who meet monthly to manage the running and maintenance of RVH. After many years of valued service the current Chair of RVHMC is stepping down and the need for new volunteers to join RVHMC is imperative to develop and maintain RVH’s important role as a much loved community centre for the benefit of all Redbourn residents.

Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch continues to grow in numbers within the village and across Hertfordshire. Last month Neighbourhood Watch, across Hertfordshire picked up a Lord High Sheriff’s Personal Award at a ceremony in County Hall for their efforts in promoting and managing Neighbourhood Watch within the county. There are now over 103,000 member households with at least one form of contact giving an increase of over 20,000 in the last twelve months. In our village the current status is as follows  We have 94 watches. These are the number of roads within the village where residents have registered for NHW and OWL  There are 1463 addresses registered with NHW / OWL. From the Office of National Statistics the number of dwelling in the village is approximately 2600 giving us NHW coverage of approximately 56%.  We have 1537 members. At some addresses there are more than one person registered.

As the days lengthen and the weather warms up we have different seasonal crimes that we need to be aware of. Hopefully we will be spending more time outside leaving windows and doors open but we still need to remain vigilant. A recent communication from the police reminds us of the following:  Secure all windows and doors when you leave and don’t leave a key hidden nearby.  When going out for the evening, make the house look occupied: draw curtains, leave a light on and a radio playing on a speaking channel.  Lock sheds so tools can’t be used by intruders. Don’t leave ladders or wheelie bins where burglars could use them as climb aids.  Secure the rear of your property where most break-ins occur. Lock gates and ensure fences are strong and secure.

Speeding: Pcso 6062 Peduto and his colleagues from the Harpenden Safer N/Hood team have been busy in Redbourn with a total of 25 Traffic Offence Reports (TOR’s) and 71 warning letters been issued on the Redbourn roads, with the aim to reduce excess speeding and educate drivers on associated dangers. More Speed enforcement patrols are planned for the coming months and we are asking all motorists to continue to obey the speed limits and to help us keep our roads safe for all users. Fly Tipping: Pc Flemons continues to support St Albans District Council with Environmental matters The local authority is the lead agency in the investigation and prosecution of fly tipping and work proactively with police to tackle the problem. If you witness fly-tipping actually taking place call the police on 999 and give as much detail as possible. If you discover fly-tipped waste after the event call SADC hotline number 01727 819598 or email the details on [email protected] Harpenden officers are working alongside officers from neighbouring divisions including and Three Rivers tackling the illegal carrying of scrap metal and waste on vehicles. Pc Flemons is currently organising a Barn meeting which will see local affected farmers, members of the Police families, crime commissioner and associated agencies such as the NFU, District and County Council coming together in order to discuss and share best policies to continue to tackle rural crime more effectively Safer Streets: Pcso Peduto, Pc Flemons and Pc Armstrong, in partnership with N/hood watch, also organised a “Safer Street Campaign” visiting all addresses in Tassel Hall. As a result, a few issues in the area where highlighted by the residents and these have already been dealt with by the Harpenden Safer N/hood team with positive outcomes. We also managed to sign another 22 members to the OWL family and further Safer Street Campaigns will be organised for the coming months. The morning is also open to anyone in the village, who would like to see what a morning at CCR is like. We usually end with lunch, usually a hog roast, with games and fun activities for all ages. Redbourn Christmas Market 2016 The Redbourn Christmas Market committee is already in full swing organising this year’s market, which is due to take place on Sunday 27th November – 11am-5pm.

Now in its 5th year, we are aiming to build on the success of previous markets, and add even more entertainment to the day to bring some extra Christmas joy to the village. Along with the entertainment will be up to 70 stalls – each selling unique Christmas gifts and food There will also be a raffle with some fantastic prizes and fun crafts and games for the children. Of course no Christmas market is complete without Father Christmas who will be joining us to meet the children of Redbourn. Stall bookings are now open. We have taken steps to improve stalls to cope with any adverse weather, and this year we are planning to have stalls in carpeted marquees within the gardens. The market is run by volunteers and is a non profit-making enterprise. Will it be music, poetry, storytelling, card making, dance or some other performance behind the door? The doors may lead you into well-known venues in the village, or even peoples' houses. Every evening from the 1st to the 24th December there will be a 15 minute performance This is an opportunity for everyone to become involved and the performances will be for children and adults. This innovative way of celebrating the season of Advent began in Stockholm and has been adopted by several towns in the UK. We could be leading the way in Hertfordshire! Redbourn Nickey Line Crossings Safety

The Nickey Line crosses major roads twice at Redbourn – at the Redbourn Lane roundabout and by Hemel Hempstead Road. All crossings are uncontrolled and with fast traffic.

Over June/July last year, with support from Redbourn Parish Council, Friends of the Nickey Line surveyed users’ opinions on the safety of the crossings as well as a usage count, observations and interviews of users of the roundabout crossings. Our thanks go to all who participated in this ! The roundabout crossings see heavy weekly crossing traffic with over 1600 crossings per week and over 1 crossing per minute at peak times. Cyclists form 60% of users; runners and walkers about 20% each.

Users were very concerned with safety on both crossings with about 80% feeling they were unsafe.

Issues included:

Traffic speed  Poor sightlines with inadequate foliage control  Unpredictability of traffic on the roundabout, aggravated by crossings being too close to it  Family groups in particular can really struggle to cross safely. “This is a death trap” – “nearly been run over twice with a buggy” – “impossible to cross” were just some of the comments. Feedback also indicated that more people would use the Nickey Line if the crossings were safer.

We have been talking to Councils and Herts Highways on actions to improve the safety of these crossings:  Better vegetation management to improve sightlines  Speed limits on all approaching roads and the roundabout  Crossings being upgraded to Zebra / Toucan crossings and repositioned for improved safety.

We have made progress on the vegetation management and hope for improved control this summer. We have, however, been disappointed with Herts Highways lack of response on the speed and better crossings issues

FOOTPATH REPAIRS

The footpath that runs between Aysgarth Road and Bettespol Meadows in Redbourn is a much used path and popular route for children to get to school. The path is currently unadopted and gets overgrown and often almost impassable with bad weather and growing weeds.

Following a £200 locality grant from Herts County Councillor Maxine Crawley, a group of Aysgarth Road residents got together to try to improve the path to make it more accessible to all who use it.

We ordered 2 bags of type1 to try to help with drainage to stop the path becoming so boggy, and also received bark chippings, free, from a contact of one of the residents. We have also stocked up on weed killer to keep the path clear as Spring approaches. It was then simply a case of a lot elbow grease from grown ups and kids to dig up the mud, lay the type 1 and spread the bark chippings. After 3 hours of hard graft, the path has been transformed and so much easier to use for all of Redbourn. Julia Merrit

St Matthews specialist dementia home hosted a teddy bears, dinosaurs, and dragon party with special needs children. The children and residents sat together and had a lunch of hot dogs and choc gateaux; the children played pass the parcel, and pin the tail on the dragon. There was a lucky dip for everyone. Both residents and children bonded easily with laughter, fun, smiles and joy. The children gleefully opened presents and danced and sang.

It was then time for the minibus to take them away even though some children didn't want to go and children thanked the residents. The residents talked all evening about the youngsters, What was apparent was that these kids came in labelled Asperger’s , Autism and Down's syndrome, but our residents have dementia and for a couple of joyful hours everybody forgot labels: there were no barriers - the children were just children; the adults, just adults and the respect between them was huge.

Redbourn and the Battle of the Somme This year sees the centenary of the Battle of the Somme where eighteen men connected to Redbourn lost their lives.

1st July, with nearly 60,000 casualties, was the worst day in the history of the th British Army. James Fox was killed that day, fighting with the 7 Bedfordshire Regiment, and although the day is seen as disastrous, the 7th actually achieved their objectives with minimal losses, capturing German positions and many prisoners. Redbourn’s losses continued throughout the Summer and Autumn, the worst days being 15th July when George Catlin, 1st The Queen’s and George Gurney, 6th Bedfords were killed at Bazentin. Then on 15th September, Frederick Rolph and Harry Taylor of 8th Bedfords, and Francis Cross, 1st Surrey Rifles died in action at Flers. Leonard Fisher, 2nd Bedfords and Mark th th Cooper, 34 Royal Fusiliers died on 12 October near Le Transloy. The battle raged on until bad weather forced a halt in November. Billy Reading was the last man from the village to die, fighting with the 1st Hertfordshires in the Ancre Valley on the 13th. The Somme became synonymous with failure, but condemning the battle by comparing ground taken versus casualties suffered misses the point. War is about degrading the enemy's ability to fight, and in that, the battle was a victory. The British Army that emerged was very different to the fresh new battalions of Kitchener’s volunteers and had developed into a highly effective fighting force. The Germans lost similar numbers, but these included many experienced junior officers and NCO’s upon whom they relied for battlefield leadership. A St Albans soldier commented; "Before the Somme, we always heard the Germans singing in their trenches. After the Somme, we never heard them singing." Of the eighteen men lost from Redbourn, thirteen have no known grave and are commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (picture right). Lest we forget. Gareth Hughes

Sunday June 12th As in past years it will be an outdoor family concert of folk music starting at 2pm and finishing at 6pm. In spite of a cool breeze last year (picture right), a record number of people gathered on the cricket field with picnics and blankets, and umbrellas- just in case!

Our special guest from overseas this year is popular singer and musician Jeff Warner, on tour from USA. He will be supported by an exciting line-up of local musicians, including Kara, Bathtub Ginn and our own ‘home-grown’ trio Said the Maiden, who started singing together at school in St.Albans (picture left) The Redbourn Cricket Club has kindly offered the clubhouse facilities again, and the bar will be open throughout the afternoon.
