    Itinerary for Namibia Study Tour, 2020 April15th, Day 1: Arrive in Windhoek, Namibia. Meet at Casa Blanca Boutique Hotel. Late afternoon group orientation, updates and dinner at Casa. April 16th, Day 2: Following a Casa breakfast we will listen to A “History of Namibia” lecture by Dr. Martha Akawa, University of Namibia (UNAM). After a short coffee/tea break, Ms. Louisa Mupetami, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Natural Resources, Parks and Regional Services. Following this we will head to the University of Namibia (UNAM) to have a lunch with PLU Alumni, Edwin Tjiramba, Director of Marketing and Communications and the PLU students who are studying at UNAM for the semester. After lunch, we will tour Heroes’ Acre war memorial. The rest of the afternoon is free time for resting or exploring downtown Windhoek. A group dinner will be at the Stellenbosch Bistro. April 17th, Day 3: Following Casa breakfast, we will tour the township called Katutura with city guide, Audwin “Scobie” de Wet. We also will visit Fidel Castro Luz Primary School in the informal settlement of Babylon. Lunch will be at Sicilia’s in downtown Windhoek. Scobie then will continue his city tour of the Independence Memorial Museum, Parliament building and other city sites. You will have an option of remaining in the city or returning to Casa. An evening gathering at NICE (National Institute of Culinary Education) restaurant with heavy appetizers will complete the day. You will meet with members of PLU’s “Namibian Nine” (Alumni of PLU), the UNAM Vice Chancellor Kenneth Matengu and, if available, the current US Ambassador to Namibia, Lisa Johnson.

    Angolan Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis ssp. angolensis) Appendix 1: Historical and recent geographic range and population of Angolan Giraffe G. c. angolensis Geographic Range ANGOLA Historical range in Angola Giraffe formerly occurred in the mopane and acacia savannas of southern Angola (East 1999). According to Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo (2005), the historic distribution of the species presented a discontinuous range with two, reputedly separated, populations. The western-most population extended from the upper course of the Curoca River through Otchinjau to the banks of the Kunene (synonymous Cunene) River, and through Cuamato and the Mupa area further north (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). The intention of protecting this western population of G. c. angolensis, led to the proclamation of Mupa National Park (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.). The eastern population occurred between the Cuito and Cuando Rivers, with larger numbers of records from the southeast corner of the former Mucusso Game Reserve (Crawford-Cabral and Verissimo 2005, Dagg 1962). By the late 1990s Giraffe were assumed to be extinct in Angola (East 1999). According to Kuedikuenda and Xavier (2009), a small population of Angolan Giraffe may still occur in Mupa National Park; however, no census data exist to substantiate this claim. As the Park was ravaged by poachers and refugees, it was generally accepted that Giraffe were locally extinct until recent re-introductions into southern Angola from Namibia (Kissama Foundation 2015, East 1999, P. Vaz Pinto pers. comm.). BOTSWANA Current range in Botswana Recent genetic analyses have revealed that the population of Giraffe in the Central Kalahari and Khutse Game Reserves in central Botswana is from the subspecies G.

"The farmer tied my grandfather up to a pole and told him he must get rid of all his cattle.. .! was just a boy then but I will never forget that.. .! could have been a wealthy farmer today if our fam­ ily had not been dispossessed in that way." The tears streamed down his face as this "coloured" pastor related his most painful experience of the past to a group at a workshop entitled "Exploring Church Unity Within the Context of Healing and Reconciliation" held in Port Elizabeth recently. A black Methodist pastor related his feelings of anger and loss at being deprived of a proper education. Once while holding a service to commemorate the young martyrs ofthe June 1976 Uprising, his con­ gregation was attacked and assaulted in the church. What hurt most, he said, was that the attacking security forces were black. The workshop, sponsored by the Provincial Council of Churches, was led by Fr. Michael Lapsley, the Anglican priest who lost both hands and an eye in a parcel bomb attack in Harare in 1990. In his new book Partisan and Priest and in his presenta­ tion he said that every South African has three stories to tell.

  • Connection and History Between Finland and Oniipa
    CONNECTION AND HISTORY BETWEEN FINLAND AND ONIIPA Finland and Namibia have enjoyed a good lasting relationship. Recently in the year 2019, the Embassy of Finland in Namibia hosted a remarkable celebration to mark 150 years of Finland and Namibia friendship. However, the notable connection between Finland and Namibia with Oniipa in particular, started through missionary work. ARRIVAL OF MISSIONARIES IN NAMIBIA The first group of missionaries, among them Martti Rautanen, nicknamed Nakambale, set foot on the sand of Walvis Bay on 14th February 1869. Then they spent a year in Otjimbingwe, where Martti Rautanen met a lady by the name Frieda, who was only 15 at the time. The missionaries then continued to Owamboland, and first settled in a village called Omandongo, on 9th July 1870. From Omandongo, the missionaries spread to Olukonda-Oniipa and other Kingdoms. The main building in Olukonda is today the Nakambale Museum, as Nakambale Martti and Frieda Rautanen with family lived here for most of their life. Nakambale died in 1926, Frieda in 1937, and they are buried in Olukonda, with some of their children. ARRIVAL AT ONIIPA POPULARY KNOWN AS A HOME FOR THE FINNISH In 1887, the Aandonga late King Kambonde ka Mpingana allocated them a piece of land in Oniipa, 8 km north of Olukonda, but due to staff shortage only in 1889 Frans Hannula started building a house, joined later by Albin Savola. The old main building from 1891 is still there, and used as a guesthouse. MAJOR WORK BY THE MISSIONARIES Besides preaching and teaching the Bible, they started learning Oshindonga and soon started writing elementary school books and grammar, and started translating passages from the Bible, and also hymns.

The vegetation type in this area is mopane vegetation, a vegetation type unique to southern Africa. In the area where I conducted research, almost all termite mounds coex- isted with trees, of which 80% were mopane. The rate at which trees withered was higher on the termite mounds than outside them, and few saplings, seedlings, or grasses grew on the mounds, indicating that termite mounds could cause trees to wither and suppress the growth of plants. However, even though termite mounds appeared to have a negative impact on veg- etation, they could actually have positive effects on the growth of mopane vegetation. More- over, local people use the soil of termite mounds as construction material, and this utilization may have an effect on vegetation change if they are removing the mounds that are inhospita- ble for the growth of plants.
