Movements in art, literature, and cinema focused on a particular stance. The visual artists who created entertainment focused on expressing the creator herself/himself beginning from German expressionism to modernism, surrealism, cubism, etc. These art movements played an important part in what an artist (literature, art, and visual) portrayed to his or her audience. As perspectives played an important part, an understanding of what the artist needed to portray was critical. Modernism dealt with this portrayal, which came about due to the changes taking place in society. In terms of the industry, where the overall product dealt with features like individualism, experimentation and absurdity, modernism dealt with a need to overthrow past notions of what painting, literature, and the visual arts needed to be. "After World War II, the focus moved from Europe to the United States, and abstract expressionism (led by Jackson Pollock) continued the movement's momentum, followed by movements such as geometric abstractions, minimalism, process art, pop art, and pop music." Postmodernism helped do away with these shortcomings. An understanding of postmodernism is explored in this paper. The main point which sets it apart is concepts like pastiche, intersexuality, and spectacle. Concerning pop culture, an understanding of referencing is a constant trait used by postmodern art. -
Two Colonisation Stages Generate Two Different Patterns of Genetic Diversity Within Native and Invasive Ranges of Ulex Europaeus
Heredity (2013) 111, 355–363 & 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved 0018-067X/13 www.nature.com/hdy ORIGINAL ARTICLE Two colonisation stages generate two different patterns of genetic diversity within native and invasive ranges of Ulex europaeus B Hornoy1,3, A Atlan1, V Roussel1,4, YM Buckley2 and M Tarayre1 Genetic diversity and the way a species is introduced influence the capacity of populations of invasive species to persist in, and adapt to, their new environment. The diversity of introduced populations affects their evolutionary potential, which is particularly important for species that have invaded a wide range of habitats and climates, such as European gorse, Ulex europaeus. This species originated in the Iberian peninsula and colonised Europe in the Neolithic; over the course of the past two centuries it was introduced to, and has become invasive in, other continents. We characterised neutral genetic diversity and its structure in the native range and in invaded regions. By coupling these results with historical data, we have identified the way in which gorse populations were introduced and the consequences of introduction history on genetic diversity. Our study is based on the genotyping of individuals from 18 populations at six microsatellite loci. As U. europaeus is an allohexaploid species, we used recently developed tools that take into account genotypic ambiguity. Our results show that genetic diversity in gorse is very high and mainly contained within populations. We confirm that colonisation occurred in two stages. During the first stage, gorse spread out naturally from Spain towards northern Europe, losing some genetic diversity. During the second stage, gorse was introduced by humans into different regions of the world, from northern Europe. -

University of Edinburgh, Unpublished PhD Thesis. 398 pp. Chapter 3: Island contexts Chapter 3 Island contexts Introduction Perhaps the thing that most distinguishes islands, at least oceanic islands… is their extreme vulnerability or susceptibility to disturbance (Fosberg 1963: 559). This chapter examines the wider context of island research as introduced in the framework in Figure 1.5 with regards to the notion that islands represent a model system, from which globally occurring processes can be understood. The chapter aims to provide a brief overview of islands and what characterises them, both as islands, and as locations from which to explore human-environment interactions. Recent examples of human-environment research in some Pacific islands, where wide ranging archaeological and comparative-led research has been carried out, are also reviewed. From this research, hypotheses regarding human impacts on environments can be developed with regards to the Faroe Islands. Island contexts as models for human impact and global change The smaller, more manageable spatial scale and insularity of island environments and societies, has made islands (particularly remote islands) popular field locations for research in a variety of disciplines, including biology, ecology, biogeography, ethnography and more recently, environmental archaeology. Islands have been referred to as outdoor laboratories (Kirch 1997a, Fitzhugh and Hunt 1997), where human-environment research can be approached from a comparative -

However, the direct and indirect efects of these facilities on the mortality, occurrence and behaviour of rare and threatened species are poorly understood. We conducted a literature review to examine the potential impacts of WEF on grouse species. We studied whether grouse (1) collide with wind turbines, (2) show behavioural responses in relation to wind turbine developments, and (3) if there are documented efects of WEF on their population sizes or dynam- ics. Our review is based on 35 sources, including peer-reviewed articles as well as grey literature. Efects of wind turbine facilities on grouse have been studied for eight species. Five grouse species have been found to collide with wind turbines, in particular with the towers. Fifteen studies reported behavioural responses in relation to wind turbine facilities in grouse (seven species), including spatial avoidance, displacement of lekking or nesting sites, or the time invested in breeding vs. non-breeding behaviour. Grouse were afected at up to distances of 500 m by WEF infrastructure, with indications of efects also at bigger distances. -

Traits involved in sexual signaling are ubiquitous among animals. Although a single trait appears sufficient to convey information, many sexually dimorphic species exhibit multiple sexual signals, which may be costly to signalers and receivers. Given that one signal may be enough, there are many microevolutionary hypotheses to explain the evolution of multiple signals. Here we extend these hypotheses to a macroevolutionary scale and compare those predictions to the patterns of gains and losses of sexual dimorphism in pheasants and partridges. Among nine dimorphic characters, including six intersexual signals and three indicators of competitive ability, all exhibited both gains and losses of dimorphism within the group. Although theories of intersexual selection emphasize gain and elaboration, those six characters exhibited greater rates of loss than gain; in contrast, the competitive traits showed a slight bias towards gains. The available models, when examined in a macroevolutionary framework, did not yield unique predictions, making it difficult to distinguish among them. -

ABSTRACT The ability to analyze alternative points of view and to empathize (understand the beliefs, attitudes and actions of another from the other’s perspective rather than from one’s own) are essential building blocks for learning in the 21 st century. Empathy for the human participants of historical times has been deemed by a number of educators as important for the development of historical understanding. The classroom teacher and the school librarian both have a prominent stake in creating educational experiences that foster the development of perspective, empathy, and understanding. This case study was designed to investigate the idea
