Prisinzano Date approved: July 18, 2012 ii ABSTRACT Kappa opioid (KOP) receptors have been suggested as an alternative target to the mu opioid (MOP) receptor for the treatment of pain because KOP activation is associated with fewer negative side-effects (respiratory depression, constipation, tolerance, and dependence). The KOP receptor has also been implicated in several abuse-related effects in the central nervous system (CNS). KOP ligands have been investigated as pharmacotherapies for drug abuse; KOP agonists have been shown to modulate dopamine concentrations in the CNS as well as attenuate the self-administration of cocaine in a variety of species, and KOP antagonists have potential in the treatment of relapse. One drawback of current opioid ligand investigation is that many compounds are based on the morphine scaffold and thus have similar properties, both positive and negative, to the parent molecule. Thus there is increasing need to discover new chemical scaffolds with opioid receptor activity. -

Retention data are presented for three types of commonly used stationary phases: dimethyl silicone (nonpolar), dimethyl sili- cone with 5% phenyl groups (slightly polar), and polyethylene glycol (polar) stationary phases. The evaluations are based on the treatment of multiple measurements with the number of data records ranging from about 5 to 800 per compound. Data analysis was limited to temperature programmed conditions. The data reported include the average and median values of retention index with standard deviations and confidence intervals. Email: [email protected] Abstract Bergamot fruits are important for cosmetic, perfumery, food and drug industries. Bergamot essential oil is well characterized and is used extensively in many flavours and fragrances. In the present study, the bergamot fruits cultivated in Adana were collected for the isolation of the volatiles in the peels, by microdistillation and headspace-solid phase microextraction (SP-SPME) techniques. The fresh peels of the fruits subjected to microdistillation were analysed by GC and GC-MS systems, simultaneously. In the same time, to trap volatile compounds in the fresh peels HS-SPME technique was employed. As result, limonene (32.9, 36.8%), linalool (37.3, 16.6%) and linalyl acetate (7.8, 30.2%) were identified as the major compounds comparable in the peels obtained by microdistillation and HS-SPME, respectively. Hogue Professor and Department Head Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ii ABSTRACT On-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTSs) are a suspected source of widespread trace organic contaminant (TOrC) occurrence in Minnesota lakes. TOrCs are a diverse set of synthetic and natural chemicals regularly used as cleaning agents, personal care products, medicinal substances, herbicides and pesticides, and foods or flavorings. Wastewater streams are known to concentrate TOrC discharges to the environment, particularly accumulating these chemicals at outfalls from centralized wastewater treatment plants. Fish inhabiting these effluent dominated environments are also known to display intersex qualities. Concurrent evidence of this phenomenon, known as endocrine disruption, in Minnesota lake fish drives hypotheses that OWTSs, the primary form of wastewater treatment in shoreline residences, may contribute to TOrC occurrence and the endocrine activity in these water bodies. The causative agents specific to fish in this region remain poorly understood. The objective of this dissertation was to investigate OWTSs as sources of TOrCs in Minnesota lakes, and TOrCs as potential causative agents for endocrine disruption in resident fish. -

(Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), was determined. Thymol was the most toxic essential oil component to adult males, gravid females, and medium nymphs, with LD50 values of 0.07, 0.12, and 0.06 mg per cockroach, respectively. trans- Cinnamaldehyde was the most toxic essential oil component to adult females, large nymphs, and small ϩ ␣ nymphs, with LD50 values of 0.19, 0.12, and 0.04 mg per cockroach, respectively. ( )- -Pinene was the least toxic essential oil component to all stages of the German cockroach. The most frequently occurring susceptibility ranking for the stages was small nymphs Ͼ medium nymphs Ͼ adult males Ͼ large nymphs Ͼ gravid females Ͼ adult females. Adult females were the least susceptible to the essential oils, so they will be the determining factor when considering a rate for Þeld application. Toxicity was positively correlated with essential oil component density and boiling point; however, there was no signiÞcant correlation between toxicity and lipophilicity. -
