After 1241, only Oltenia remained the single region where the Hungarian domination survived in certain forms until 1291, when a new Tatar offensive extended along the Danube, up to Serbia, the domination of the Isaccea emirate ruled by Nogai. In Oltenia, the voivode Litovoi tried in 1278 to liberate his small country from the Hungarian vassalage, and to extend it east of Olt. The Tatar hegemony provided stability and favored the establishment of the first Romanian state in northern Walachia. The legenda- ry founder Negru Vodă came from the Făgăraş area with his military suite in 1290, when their properties were confiscated. If his identity with the father of Basarab remains controversial, it is however certain that the voivodate of Curtea de Argeş, established by the middle of the 13th century, gained its freedom from the Hungarian pretentions through the protection of the Golden Horde. The major event mentioned in documents is the revolt from Oltenia of voivode Litovoi, which triggered a Hungarian military campaign led by magister Georgius. There are still unelucidated aspects concerning the chronology and the consequences of this event on the process of territorial unification. • Between Old and New Rome
Jonas Thungren Lindbärg “A burdensome matter it is today to abandon the delicate and subtle customs of the Latin people, i.e. the Franks, and to return to the Between Old and New Rome dullness of the old Armenians.” Thus wrote the Armenian archbishop Nerses, not without a hint of Armenian and Bulgarian Contacts with the Papacy around 1204 sarcasm, when defending his endeavour to unite the Armenian Church with the Roman in the late twelfth century. What this old dullness was is less clear but it seems that Latin customs had indeed become both Jonas Thungren Lindbärg desirable and powerful, for this ecumenical endeavour met with success and only a handful of years later something similar occured in the Between Old and New Rome Old and New Between Balkans, when a newly founded Bulgarian empire submitted to the Roman Church as well. The rulers of these realms would not only profess their loyalty to the Roman Church but would also carry papal banners into battle and exchange letters with the pope. This study examines how these rulers used their relationships with the Papacy, as well as how the pope used his relationship with them. It is a study of ideas and of symbolic power, of how kingdoms and empires were imagined and expressed. It is a study of the new and the old, of two new power-centres emerging from the old peripheries of the crumbling Byzantine Empire, of leaders weaving together real and imagined histories with new influences in order to establish and profess their legitimate rule. • The Middle Ages in Romania Began with the Withdrawal of the Mongols
The Middle Ages in Romania began with the withdrawal of the Mongols, the last of the migrating populations to invade the territory of modern Romania, after their attack of 1241– 1242. It came to an end with the reign of Michael the Brave (1593–1601) who managed, for a short time in 1600, to rule Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania, the three principalities whose territories were to be united some three centuries later to form Romania. Over most of this period, Banat, Crişana, Maramureş and Transylvania – now regions in Romania to the west of the Carpathian Mountains – were part of the Kingdom of Hungary. They were divided into several types of administrative units, such as "counties" and "seats". The heads of the Transylvanian counties or "counts" were subordinated to a special royal official called voivode, but the province was seldom treated as a single unit, since the Székely and Saxon seats were administered separately. In the kingdom, Romanian peasants, being Orthodox, were exempt from the tithe, an ecclesiastical tax payable by all Roman Catholic commoners. However, Romanian noblemen slowly lost the ability to participate in political life, as the 14th-century monarchs pursued a zealous pro- Catholic policy. Their position became even worse after 1437 when the so-called "Union of Three Nations", an alliance of the Hungarian noblemen, the Székelys, and the Saxons, was formed in order to crush the Bobâlna peasant uprising. Wallachia, the first independent medieval state between the Carpathians and the lower Danube was created when Basarab I (c. 1310–1352) terminated the suzerainty of the king of Hungary with his victory in the battle of Posada in 1330.

  • Un Litovoi Înainte De Litovoi?
38 Claudia S. Popescu, Laurențiu Nistorescu Un Litovoi înainte de Litovoi? A Litovoi before Litovoi? Abstract: The historical character by the name Litovoi (a word that is a polytonym not an anthroponym), who lived in the current province of Oltenia in the second half of the thirteenth century, had several predecessors who were very active in the northern regions of the Empires of Constantinople and Tarnovo. Their existence suggests that Terra Lytua had had an institutional history of several centuries before the foundation of the medieval State of Țara Românească/Wallachia.

  • The Political Relations Between Wallachia and the Hungarian Kingdom During the Reign of the Anjou Kings *
Relaţii internaţionale The Political Relations between Wallachia and the Hungarian Kingdom during the Reign of the Anjou Kings * Marius Diaconescu I. lntroduction During the Middle Ages, the politica! relations were governed by certain specific requirements. The medieval state meant one and the same with the sovereign's person - emperor, king, prince, etc. The relations between the medieval states were the same as those between their rulers. The basic principie of the feudalism was that of the vassality which designed the relationship between the ruler and the vassal'. The relations of the Romanian states with the neighbouring · ones, especially with the great powers, follow the same feudal principles. The historiography bas often approached the relations between Wallachia and the Hungarian Kingdom, in studies particularly focused on this topic as well as 2 in syntheses. The works of classical authors as D. Onciul , N. Iorga3, and Gh. Brătianu\ to refer only to the best known researchers of the problem, have been enriched, within the Romanian historiography, by other writings, more or less 5 relevant • Some of the contributions strictly tackling the subject are especially remarkable as compared to the rich literature published during the last 50 years. Maria Holban's studies, collected in a volume significantly entitled On the History of the Romanian-Hungarian Relationships6 compelled recognition in the Romanian literature, despite many discrepancies and far-fetched interpretations lacking • The hereby research is part of a series tackling the relationships existing between Wallachia and Hungary until 1526. 1 M. Bloch, Feudal Society, The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1968, 1-11, pp.

  • A Brief Historical Outline of the Evolution of the Hungarian Kingdom Border
Annals of the Academy of Romanian Scientists Online Edition Series on History and Archaeology ISSN 2067-5682 Volume 7, Number 2/2015 27 A BRIEF HISTORICAL OUTLINE OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE HUNGARIAN KINGDOM BORDER ∗ Radu Ştefan VERGATTI Abstract. The title of this short article requires, from the very start of the discussion sine ira et studio , a number of clarifications. They are needed, as documents show, to remove any passionate views that are often encountered in the Hungarian historiography. We have used the term the Kingdom of Hungary for, ever since its emergence, the Hungarian state had taken the form of a monarchy. The rank of that monarchy was always that of kingdom, since its emergence until 1945, when the Republic was proclaimed. Keywords: Hungarians, western/eastern Christendom, Hungarian Kingdom, boundary, expansion, conquests, etnho-demographic realities. As for the arrival of the Hungarians in Europe, that occurred later. This Finno-Ugric people 1 living in the central basin of the Volga River 2 was born from the mixture of two tribal unions, that of the Ugrians and of the Magyars 3. The Turkic tribes of the Bashkirs would later join them4. Hence, the nickname “Bozgor” that appeared later on 5. Hungarian tribes pushed westwards, through the present-day territory of Ukraine. In 889 Turkic tribes of the Pechenegs were hit. The Hungarians would regroup. Following the Cossacks’ model, they would choose two leaders, namely Árpád and Kursan. They assumed the pompous, unjustified title of kings, although they led a mere union of tribes. Basileus Leon VI skilfully used the Hungarians to fight against the Bulgarians, who had risen under Tsar Simeon (893-927).

  • The Mongol Domination and the Detachment of the Romanians of Walachia from the Domination of the Hungarian Kingdom1
MISCELÁNEA De Medio Aevo ISSN-e: 2255-5889 The Mongol domination and the detachment of the Romanians of Walachia from the domination of the Hungarian Kingdom1 Alexandru Madgearu2 Recibido: 13/07/2018 / Aceptado: 02/08/2018 / Publicado: 15/08/2018 Abstract: The expansion of Hungary outside the Carpathians, a process which involved colonization and military presence, was stopped at the middle of the 13th century by the Golden Horde domination over this area. The Mongol domination allowed the development of small Romanian political organizations ruled by voievodes or cnezi, in the region east of Olt, while west of Olt the Hungarian domination survived in certain forms until 1291, when a new offensive extended along the Danube, up to Serbia, the domination of the Isaccea emirate ruled by Nogai. In northern Oltenia, the voievode Litovoi tried in 1278 to liberate his land from the Hungarian vassalage, and to extend it east of Olt. The Golden Horde hegemony provided stability, being a condition for the establishment of the first Romanian state in northern Walachia. The legendary founder Negru Vodă came from the Transylvanian (Făgăraş area) with his military suite in 1290, after the confiscation of their properties. The Hungarian domination over the voievodate of Curtea de Argeş, established around the middle of the 13th century was replaced with the protection of the Golden Horde. Keywords: Golden Horde; Walachia; Hungary; Transylvania; Bulgaria.
