This Education Guide will give you some tools to further educate before and after your visit to the park. The guide gives an overview of the history associated with Fort King, provides comprehension questions, and delivers activities to Gen. Thomas Jesup incorporate into the classroom. To make your experience more enjoyable we have included a list of items: • Check in with our Park Staff prior to your scheduled visit to confrm your arrival time and participation numbers. • The experience at Fort King includes outside activities. Please remember the following: » Prior to coming make staff aware of any mobility issues or special needs that your group may have. » Be prepared for the elements. Sunscreen, rain gear, insect repellent and water are recommended. » Wear appropriate footwear. Flip fops or open toed shoes are not recommended. » Please bring lunch or snacks if you would like to picnic at the park before or after your visit. • Be respectful of our park staff, volunteers, and other visitors by being on time. Publication Number: M-617 Publication Title: Returns from U.S. Military Posts, 1800-1916 Date Published: 1968 RETURNS FROM U.S. MILITARY POSTS, 1800-1916 On the 1550 rolls of this microfilm publication, M617, are reproduced returns from U.S. military posts from the early 1800's to 1916, with a few returns extending through 1917. Most of the returns are part of Record Group 94, Records of the Adjutant General's Office; the remainder is part of Record Group 393, Records of United States Army Continental Commands, 1821-1920, and Record Group 395, Records of United States Army Overseas Operations and Commands, 1898-1942. The commanding officer of every post, as well ad commanders of all other bodies of troops such as department, division, brigade, regiment, or detachment, was required by Army Regulations to submit a return (a type of personnel report) to The Adjutant General at specified intervals, usually monthly, on forms provided by that office. Several additions and modifications were made in the form over the years, but basically it was designed to show the units that were stationed at a particular post and their strength, the names and duties of the officers, the number of officers present and absent, a listing of official communications received, and a record of events. In the early 19th century the form used for the post return usually was the same as the one used for regimental or organizational returns. Printed forms were issued by the Adjutant General’s Office, but more commonly used were manuscript forms patterned after the printed forms. -

CDSGThe Newsletter The Coast Defense Study Group, Inc. — Winter 2021 * * * * * CDSG Meeting and Tour Calendar Membership Minute Please advise Terry McGovern of any additions Quentin Schillare or changes at [email protected] As we move into the second month of 2021 the membership 2021 CDSG Special Tour of the Coast Defense Study Group has grown a bit. We now have August 21 - 29 and August 25 - September 3, 2021 403 individual members and 19 organizational members for a Sweden total of 422. This total includes 18 new members, including two Terry McGovern, [email protected] who have rejoined after a short break. It is unknown what impact the coronavirus has had on membership. Membership depends 2021 CDSG Conference on several variables. Some members join and renew to have access October 12 - 17, 2021 to our quarterly publications, others sign up to be eligible for a Charleston/Savannah conference or special tour, and still others with an interest in the Gary Alexander, [email protected] history of seacoast fortifications find us on the Internet or from a friend. Regardless, membership supports all CDSG activities. 2022 CDSG Conference Things are quiet now, but they will pick up in October with the March 30 - April 3, 2022 Charleston/Savannah conference followed six months later in late New Orleans March 2022 with our visit to New Orleans. While probing the records in an effort to recreate this period of Florida’s past in all its glory and shame, searching for clarification about an individual or a particular event, it is both rewarding and frustrating to find tantalizing hints of other information relating to the search, information that is pertinent to the subject but the very existence of which was unknown. Frustrating because following every lead would take a lifetime, yet there is no way of knowing where the trails might lead, what treasures of information might be found. As a case in point, this writer, searching the letter book of Captain Francis Belton (in command at Ft. Brooke in December, 1835) for the specific order that sent Major Dade on his doomed march, found a letter from Belton to General Clinch written at 9:00 A.M. on the 23rd, “...two companies have been put in motion this morning at reveille under the command of Bt. -

The goal of this project was to identify and record a specific type of historic resource located within rural areas of St. Johns County in the general vicinity of Elkton and Hastings. This assessment was specifically designed to examine structures listed on the St. Johns County Property Appraiser’s website as being built prior to 1920. The survey excluded the area of incorporated Hastings. The survey goals were to develop a historic context for the farmhouses in the area, and to make an assessment of the farmhouses with an emphasis towards individual and thematic National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) potential. Florida Master Site File (FMSF) forms in a SMARTFORM II database format were completed on all newly surveyed structures, and updated on all previously recorded structures within the survey area. -

Developed by the Dundalk – Patapsco Neck Historical Society & Museum and Edgemere - Sparrows Point Recreation Council Fort Howard was built at North Point, where the Patapsco River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. North Point was historically important long before the fort was constructed.. NORTH POINT Old North Point Road was once an Indian trail leading down the “backbone of Patapsco Neck.” Captain John Smith In 1608, during his epic exploration of the Chesapeake Bay, Captain John Smith and his crew are thought to have entered Old Road Bay, just west of North Point. “They adorn themselves with copper beads and paintings. The women have their legs, hands, chests, and faces cunningly tattooed with beasts, and serpents wrought into their flesh with black dots. In each ear they have 3 great holes whereat they hang chains, bracelets or copper. Some of the men wear in those holes a small green and yellow snake, near half a yard in length which crawling and lapping itself about his neck oftentimes would kiss his lips. Others wear a dead rat tied by the tail, the whole skin of a hawk stuffed with the wings abroad or the hand of their enemy dried.” Captain John Smith describing the natives he met during his exploration of the Chesapeake in 1608. While “nuisance flooding” may not pose a serious threat or result in major damage, it interrupts daily routines and can negatively impact businesses. The definition of nuisance flooding, for the purpose of this plan and in accordance with §3-1001 of the Natural Resource Article of the Maryland Annotated Code, is “high tide flooding B A C K G R O U N D that causes a public inconvenience.” The legislation requires that the Nuisance Flood Plan include three critical components: 1) Inventory of known flood hazard areas where tidal nuisance flooding occurs; 2) Identification of flood thresholds/ water levels/ conditions that lead to tidal nuisance flooding; and 3) A mechanism to document tidal nuisance flood events from 2020 to 2025. -

Now it’s on to New York. The volunteer September 14 - 18, 2016 2017 conference team has been working for more than eighteen HD Portsmouth NH months to organize and coordinate next year’s conference focusing Craig Lentz, [email protected] on the harbor defense of Southern New York; they have six months of hard work to go. 2017 CDSG Annual Conference The conference is tentatively scheduled for March 28 to April March 28 - April 2, 2017 2, 2017. The CDSG has visited the area three times: a special tour New York (1994) and an annual conference (2003) to Long Island Sound N. Scarpulla & S. Welch, [email protected] and a New York conference in 1997, long ago. CDSG leadership understands the potential inconvenience of 2018 CDSG Conference holding an annual conference in September of one year and turning April 2018 around and scheduling another only six months later.
