24/03/2014 Climate Change and Coastal Community Adaptations in India Presented by Prof. Dr. K.T. Thomson Principal Investigator (ARTISTICC-India) School of Industrial Fisheries Cochin University of Science and Technology Cochin, Kerala, India at Brest, Brittany, France March 10-14, 2014 Indian scenario 1 24/03/2014 Indian coastal areas and communities • Long coast line of around 8000 kilometers • Highly diverse coast – Beaches, backwaters, mangroves, salt producing units – Coastal agriculture and aquaculture, tourism (spiritual, sport) • Diverse communities • Livelihood dependency – High density of population compared to other areas – Over 63 million people from costal communities in the states of Gujarat, Kerala, Tamilnadu and Orissa in India are highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea-level rise • Low levels of technologies Indian costal zone Major Features • Rapid state sponsored transformation drive towards modernization • Strong state regulations • Privatization of coastal areas and ecosystems • Community resistance against state regulations • Climate change threats • Sea level rise, Tsunami, beach erosion, winds and typhoons, salt intrusion, drinking water problems 2 24/03/2014 Study Areas Pakistan China INDIA Gujarat Orrisa Arabian Sea Bay of Bengal Tamil Nadu Kerala Indian Ocean Study areas • Two locations each in the west and east coasts • West coast • Vypin Island Kerala and • Kutch Bay in Gujarat (To be sea-level rise. 10 24/03/2014 • Proposed objectives of the study – To present an historical account of the political ecology of Vypin Island since its formation – To identify climate variability and vulnerabilities of actants (communities, industry, state and non human elements) in the Island. – To compose institutions and networks that foster sustainable adaptations to changing climate 11 change • Political trends • Institutional dynamics and trends • Governance trends and dynamics Present social structure • Vyppin Island formed around early 1300 A.D due to a natural flooding in the region and its interaction with Arabian sea • Ecosystem Communities • Konkinies, Syrian catholic Latin Catholics • Ezhava and other Scheduled caste communities • Cultural entities • Sree varaha
