Near the end, Rees keeps jumping back and forth to the storyline of David and then Nick, finally converging. But by this time, Rees has kept the reader waiting too long. was the chance ofa lifetime. An act ofrevenge. An opportunity once and for all to show those jocks from my high-school days. Oh, those cruel memories of always being the last one picked when teams were being chosen. The OF CHAMPIONS embarrassment of fumbling an easy catch. The feeling that walking into the locker room was like walking into the gas chamber. Well, if they could only see me now. I've been going to the gym for years. I no longer look like a wimp. Unfortunately, I still play sports like a wimp. Yet, deep inside me, there was still hope. Perhaps there would be some event at the Gay Games II I could participate in. The games were the ultimate expression of pride. The joy of being there, surrounded by gay athletes from around the globe, and the thrill of seeing stereotypes smashed would be a heady experience. There was no doubt in my mind ... I would be at the Gay Games. However, one needs moral support in such endeavors, so I would enlist my friends. Denny and Beau, of course. Beau even liked sports, and had been observed watching baseball games on TV. Although, Denny claimed Beau was easily confused and thought he was watching MTVvideos. Nora and her lover, Dolores, were included to provide les- bian sensibility. Last, but not least, Dennis, from New York. He was as equally unathletic as 1,so no matter how badly I did, I would have company. Yes, we were truly a gay entourage. So there we all were, hurtling through the night on a moonlight special. I love these bargain flights, even if they do skimp on service. "I'm worried," I confided in Dennis, as we shared fried chicken out of a bucket from the colonel. "What event can I possibly enter?" Sports in general gave me a cold feeling all over. It made me think of Wheaties, "The Breakfast of Champions." Hal Some meal. I had always been left starving. A vision 9f Mary Lou Reitan clouded my mind. That obnoxious little cow. Those enerqizedthiqhs. I began to feel nauseous. "Don't you like the chicken?" Dennis inquired upon noticing my:condition. "Don't worry, David, if worse comes to worse you can help me." "What competition are you entered in?" "My specialty, of course," Dennis replied mysteriously. Now I was worried, and I wondered if it had anything to do with the two large crates Dennis had stowed in the cargo hold. My reveries were broken by the sight of the sun rising over San Francisco Bay as we began our descent. "The adventure begins," Dolores proclaimed from across the aisle as she squeezed Nora's , hand.

TUJTAUGUST 22 - AUGUST 28 1986 PAGE 65 'WW OPEN LETTER SNAPSHOTS FROM THE MONTROSE CLINIC MISS GAY TEXAS PAGEANT The Montrose Clinic was founded in 1981 for one purpose-to reduce the spread of August 6-9, 1986 Sexually Transmitted Diseases [STDs). The clinic in all of its decisions relative to the ser- at Old Plantation in Dallas vices and programs it offers has never compromised that purpose, nor betrayed the Photos by Michael McKinney trust or confidence of the community it serves. The clinic exists today committed solely to that same purpose ... only now we have AIDS. The AIDS Foundation of Houston, Inc. recently went to the media to publicize their ob- jection to the Montrose Clinic now being fu1ded for the HTLV-III [AIDS virus) antibody test program. The foundation contends that it is a misuse of an AIDS education grant, that the clinic is receiving funds for the actual test-not eciJcation. Curtis Dickson, the executive director of the AIDS Foundation, says that this money was not intended to be used for AIDS testing. He stated, "We feel it's being used inappropriately to continue the testing program." This accusation by the AIDS Foundation is unwarranted and totally incorrect. The legal contract entered into by and between the Montrose Clinic and the city of Houston states, "The city agrees to pay and the Contractor agrees to accept a fee of eleven dollars [$11 .00) per person for whom the Contractor performs pre-testing counseling." The Montrose Clinc is funded for AIDS Education, not for the actual test itself. The Montrose Clinic began the HTLV-III antibody test program in June, 1985. Not under contract and without funding, the clinic agreed to be the alternative test site for the city of Houston. The clinic entered into this program for one reason only-to protect the blood supply. After much trepidation because of the controversy surrounding the test at that time, the board decided that it was better to offer it at the clinic so that individuals wanting the test would not go to the blood centers. Also, the clinic could offer the test with absoUte anonyrrity, thJs eliminating all potential discriminatory action against participants. This program cootirJJed ttrough February 1986 when the clinic then entered into the current contract and began receiving funds. The AIDS eciJcation and risk reduction inforrhation provided by the Montrose Clinic through its HTLV-III testing program is second to none. It is a one-oo-one dialogue predominantly with individuals at high risk for AIDS. What better way to stop the spread of AIDS than to face-to-face discuss with an individual the risks their behavior might have to themselves or others-especially if they test positive to HTLV-III.
