stripes.com Volume 79, No. 6 ©SS 2020 MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2020 50¢/Free to Deployed Areas CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK Children in MIDEAST Spain relish outdoor hour BY JOSEPH WILSON AND GEIR MOULSON Associated Press BARCELONA, Spain — Shrieks of joy rang out in the streets of Spain as children were allowed to go outside and play Sun- day for first time in six weeks, while peo- ple in Italy and France were eager to hear their leaders’ plans for easing some of the world’s strictest coronavirus lockdowns. “This is wonderful! I can’t believe it has been six weeks,” Susana Sabate, a mother of 3-year-old twin boys, said in Barcelona. “My boys are very active. Today when they saw the front door and we gave them their scooters, they were thrilled.” Wary of igniting new infection flare-ups, nations have been taking divergent paths on how and when to reopen their econo- mies after weeks at a standstill. The official death toll from the virus topped 200,000 worldwide, with 2.9 million confirmed infections, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Those fig- ures understate the enormity of the crisis, because of limited testing, differences in Ready to deliver counting the dead and some governments’ efforts to underplay their outbreaks. • UNDERNEATH the MUSIC Ellington
ABSTRACT Title of Document: UNDERNEATH THE MUSIC Ellington Rudi Robinson, Master of Fine Arts, 2008 Directed By: Professor, Jefferson Pinder, and Department of Art I see my work as an expression of a young man growing up in a household of music, books, and highly influential people. During the crack era that becomes prevalent under the tenure of President Reagan. The influences of the past will be the guides to surviving in a time when many friends parish as victims from the abundance of violence. The influences and tragedies are translated into motifs that are metaphors combined to create forms of communication. The hardwood floors, record jackets, tape, and railroad tracks provide a catalyst. These motifs are combined and isolated to tell an intense story that is layered with the history of the Civil Rights Movement, hip hop culture, drugs and music. The work is a conduit to release years of pain dealing with loss and oppression. It is also a vehicle to celebrate the philosophy that joy and pain are synonymous with life. UNDERNEATH THE MUSIC By Ellington Rudi Robinson Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Fine Arts 2008 Advisory Committee: Professor Jefferson Pinder, Chair Professor Patrick Craig Professor Margo Humphries Professor Brandon Morse Rex Weil © Copyright by Ellington Robinson 2008 Preface The smell of the coffee bean aroma surrounded by the books and music, the phone rings. “Good afternoon, thank you for calling Borders Books and Music, how can I help you?” “El! What’s up man, I have some bad news.” This is an all too familiar greeting.

  • Drama Recommended Monologues
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) Recommended Monologues 1 AUDITION PIECES – FEMALE THREE SISTERS by Anton Chekhov IRINA: Tell me, why is it I’m so happy today? Just as if I were sailing along in a boat with big white sails, and above me the wide, blue sky and in the sky great white birds floating around? You know, when I woke up this morning, and after I’d got up and washed, I suddenly felt as if everything in the world had become clear to me, and I knew the way I ought to live. I know it all now, my dear Ivan Romanych. Man must work by the sweat of his brow whatever his class, and that should make up the whole meaning and purpose of his life and happiness and contentment. Oh, how good it must be to be a workman, getting up with the sun and breaking stones by the roadside – or a shepherd – or a school-master teaching the children – or an engine-driver on the railway. Good Heavens! It’s better to be a mere ox or horse, and work, than the sort of young woman who wakes up at twelve, and drinks her coffee in bed, and then takes two hours dressing…How dreadful! You know how you long for a cool drink in hot weather? Well, that’s the way I long for work. And if I don’t get up early from now on and really work, you can refuse to be friends with me any more, Ivan Romanych. 2 HONOUR BY JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH SOPHIE: I wish—I wish I was more… Like you.
