I deeply cherish the thoughtful gesture, and the kind remarks. As Mr. President, rightly stated in the two congratulatory messages, I have rendered over 70 years of my life to the service of this country, starting from the age of 19. And it pleased the Almighty God to keep me up to this age, and in sound health. Accordingly, as long as, I live, I will continue to work for the good of this country, in any way, I find it possible. It is in that light, and in view of recent worrisome developments, that I am writing this letter to Mr. President on Democracy Day. The message herein, is a message of truth; encapsulating my thoughts, as well as, the feelings, dissentions, and remonstrations, of the people of the South South Geopolitical Zone, that I have been continuously inundated with. I have to state it, unequivocally, the way it is, for the sake of posterity, and in the interest of peace, unity, and progress of our dear country, Nigeria. And the truth, Mr. President, is that the South South Geopolitical Zone have not been treated fairly, by your administration, despite our contribution to the economy of the country. Let us call a spade, a spade! For reasons unknown to me, we have continued to witness discriminative, and unjust actions, against people of South South Extraction, under presidency, in the last five years.

The successful abduction of about 300 girls from the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok-Borno State, Nigeria, in the dead of the night boosted the effrontery of the sect to undertake more abduction of hundreds of girls and women even in broad day light in North-Eastern Nigeria. The abduction of the Chibok girls generated both national and international concerns and raised the recognition of the group‟s ruthlessness against women. Various attempts to rescue the Chibok girls by the Nigerian government, humanitarian agencies and the international community failed. Using qualitative descriptive analysis, the paper avows that the controversial release of 21 Chibok girls without battle conditions or reports leaves a lot to speculation. This event represents a symbolism of Boko Haram‟s ability to hold the Nigerian government to ransom at its own terms. It submits that the gradual release of the girls and the sect‟s proposal for the negotiation of 83 more girls raises questions on the terms of the negotiations leading to the release as well as queries the strength of Nigeria‟s anti-terrorism war.

Various scholars like Sen and Nussbaum have constantly presented education as a tool for empowerment and augmentation of women’s roles. However, this is not the case in Nigeria as educated women are unable to attain the height to which the concept of empowerment posits or seen at the forefront of development. This thesis examines the veracity of Martha Nussbaum’s Capability Approach by putting to the test, by means of a case-study of Nigerian women, the role of educational capability in enhancing women’s empowerment, based on a content analysis of focused in-depth interviews of 26 Nigerian women, who are considered leaders in their respective fields, the thesis argues that despite enhanced educational qualifications women are still subject to entrenched patriarchal resistance.

There is palpable fear and concern everywhere in Nigeria now, especially among public treasury looters because there is certainly no hiding place for them as the war against corruption rages. Many who hitherto had been treated as untouchables have either been quizzed, arrested or facing prosecution in courts. The anti-graft agencies’ dragnet has so far caught many. Indeed, it is judgement day for yesterday’s men and women of impunity who made corruption a way of life. Perhaps, the most mind-boggling case is the one involving Sambo Dasuki, immediate past National Security Adviser (NSA) who is currently standing trial for allegedly mismanaging $2.1billion meant for arms procurement. It has opened a Pandora’s Box which has tainted many serving and former military personnel and public servants as well as top politicians.

Boko Haram has committed many atrocities from 2011 to the present. However, the broader humanitarian crisis did not receive nearly as much attention as the kidnappings of the Chibok girls. Therefore, we must ask, why this is the case? This thesis contributes to the literature by introducing a theory of event adoption to describe the relationship between an event-based advocacy campaign and Transnational Advocacy Networks.

ABSTRACT: Political partisanship is a very intriguing game. However, the tendency among some megalomaniacs to politicise sensitive national issues has undermined Nigeria’s national interest as well as exacerbated its fragile security. Many political actors mainly from the two major political parties— PDP and APC— were more inclined to using incendiary utterances in order to score cheap political followership in the build up to the 2015 General Election. The study relied on documentary evidence through which data were generated for the validation of its hypothesis. It found that the inclination among these politicians and ethnic jingoists to politicise the counter-insurgence operations has not only sustained the insurgency but also undermined Nigeria’s political economy. Basically, it recommended the adoption of a non-partisan counter-insurgence approach as a remedy for Boko Haram insurgence.
