THEATRE: ELECTRA Old Vic, 22 September – 20 December

Teaming up once again with director Ian Rickson, actress Kristin Scott Thomas will play the lead in Electra, a classic Greek story of power and revenge. The play joins the seductive autumn season at the Old Vic, also featuring Clarence Darrow with Kevin Spacey, and is the latest stage performance by Scott Thomas, who won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress, following her representation as Arkadina in Chekhov’s The Seagull.

Adapted by Frank McGuinness, Electra tells the tragic tale of a daughter consumed by grief and anger, after the murder of her farther Agamemnon. With her brother, Orestes, she seeks revenge against her mother and stepfather, leading to merciless episodes and a haunting conclusion. www.oldvictheatre.com

DANCE THEATRE: JOHN National Theatre, 30 October – 13 January

Dominic Dromgoole’s production at the Globe has been described as ‘captivating’ and whilst not one of Shakespeare’s more loveable plays it is ‘fleet, urgent, exciting and dangerous’ say the Financial Times.

Opposing dictatorship and republicanism, private virtue and mob violence, Shakespeare’s tense drama of high politics reveals the emotional currents that flow between men in power. www.nationaltheatre.org.uk

ART: MIRRORCITY Hayward Gallery, 14 October – 4 January 2015

Exhibiting pieces from emerging and established artists working in London, MIRRORCITY is a visceral exploration of the digital revolution and its influence on our experiences. The works engage with the conditions and consequences of living in the digital era, posing the key questions: ‘How can we navigate the space between the digital and the physical?’ and ‘What is the effect of advanced technologies on our lives?’

It is a thought-provoking collection, which is bound to illustrate how close reality has come to some of science fiction’s most fantastic fantasies. www.southbankcentre.co.uk/venues/hayward-gallery ART: ALIBIS - SIGMAR POLKE 1963–2010 Tate Modern, 9 October 2014 – 8 February 2015

Sigmar Polke was one of the most insatiably experimental artists of the twentieth century.

This retrospective is the first to bring together the unusually broad range of media he worked with during his five-decade career – not only painting, drawing, photography, film and sculpture, but also notebooks, slide projections and photocopies. He worked in off-the-wall materials ranging from meteor dust to gold, bubble wrap, snail juice, potatoes, soot and even uranium, all the while resisting easy categorisation. www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern

MUSIC: ST PETERSBURG PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, YURI TEMIRKANOV AND MAXIM VENGEROV Royal Festival Hall, 8 November

It is a repertoire to stir the soul and musicians with the magic touch - the best of Russia comes to the Southbank Centre.

Big tunes and rich intensity fill this programme of classics performed by the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Russia’s oldest orchestra, with conductor Yuri Temirkanov and virtuoso violinist Maxim Vengerov.

The concert opens with Lyadov’s atmospheric tone poem Kikimora. A work showing exceptional flair for orchestral colour, it is inspired by the legend of the Russian house spirit that causes mischief.

Consistently voted an audience favourite, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto - a deeply felt work full of melodic vitality, soul and virtuosic brilliance - is performed by Maxim Vengerov, an artist once again thrilling audiences following his sabbatical. www.southbankcentre.co.uk/venues/royal-festival-hall

ART: TRACEY EMIN – THE LAST GREAT ADVENTURE IS YOU White Cube, 8 October – 16 November

This is a major new exhibition by Tracey Emin, her first at the London gallery in five years. Featuring bronze sculptures, gouaches, paintings, large-scale embroideries and neon works, the exhibition chronicles the contemplative nature of work by an artist who has consistently examined her life with raw candour.

‘The work is about rites of passage, of time and age, and the simple realisation that we are always alone.’

BLACKFRIARS STORIES…

This autumn, St George sponsored and presented in partnership with Southwark Council, Blackfriars Stories – a programme of four outdoor events that celebrated the wealth of history and culture in Blackfriars. Local residents were invited to watch the creative narratives reveal themselves.

The first event took place on 2nd July. ‘Trunk Road’ unfolded into a lively carnival of street performers, live music and parties. The star act was a gigantic mechanical elephant that led a procession of other animals along Blackfriars Road. Cabinet member, Dora Dixon-Fyle applauded the event, “What a great way to celebrate the culture and history of the Blackfriars area, and as for a gigantic mechanical elephant, I am sure it was a fantastic sight to behold!”

Other events included a production of Romeo and Juliet and a city hunt. The closing act on Blackfriars Stories’ agenda took place between 20th and 29th October. ‘Another Day’ was a theatrical production of eight short plays inspired by local tales. Commissioned by A Friend of a Friend Productions.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S CYCLING VISION…

Committed to improving cycling in the borough, Southwark Council joined forces with experts from Denmark and the Netherlands to develop an ‘active transport’ plan.

Two-day workshops were facilitated by Copenhagenize Design Co. and Mobycon, which explored planning, policy, design and marketing.

They were attended by Transport for London (TfL), along with key development partners and community representatives in the area including Southwark Cyclists, Living Streets, Dulwich Safe Routes, One Blackfriars and St George staff. These workshops were a great success.

A WARM WELCOME… Local Southwark resident, Brian Kasule has joined the Commercial Department at One Blackfriars, as Graduate Surveyor. We are pleased to have him on board. Brian was introduced to St George by Dan Taylor from Southwark Council. Now gainfully employed, St George plans to fund Brian’s BSc in Quantity Surveying.

Ian Simpson is the visionary behind One Blackfriars. As a co-founder of Ian Simpson Architects, his design philosophy centres on the force of design excellence to regenerate post-industrial cities. He sees architecture as a critical channel through which energy flows into an urban environment.

Integrating his values in sustainability and innovation, and always with an eye for luxury and aesthetic detail, Ian Simpson has established an impressive reputation in architecture, and One Blackfriars is at the very height of his brilliance.

Inspiration for the shape of the building came from the Lansetti II vase, created in 1952 by designer Timo Sarpaneva.
