UNIT-1 THERMAL POWER STATIONS Introduction ➢ Thermal energy is the major source of power generation in India. More than 60% of electric power is produced by steam plants in India. India has large deposit of coal (about 170 billion tonnes), 5th largest in world. Indian coals are classified as A-G grade coals. ➢ In Steam power plants, the heat of combustion of fossil fuels is utilized by the boilers to raise steam at high pressure and temperature. The steam so produced is used in driving the steam turbines or sometimes steam engines couples to generators and thus in generating electrical energy. ➢ Steam turbines or steam engines used in steam power plants not only act as prime movers but also as drives for auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, stokers fans etc. ➢ Steam power plants may be installed either to generate electrical energy only or generate electrical energy along with generation of steam for industrial purposes such as in paper mills, textile mills, sugar mills and refineries, chemical works, plastic manufacture, food manufacture etc. ➢ The steam for process purposes is extracted from a certain section of turbine and the remaining steam is allowed to expand in the turbine. Alternatively the exhaust steam may be used for process purposes. ➢ Thermal stations can be private industrial plants and central station. Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Thermal Power Plant Advantages: ▪ Less initial cost as compared to other generating stations. ▪ It requires less land as compared to hydro power plant. ▪ The fuel (i.e. coal) is cheaper. ▪ The cost of generation is lesser than that of diesel power plants. -

EFDA-JET Bulletin JET Recent Results and Planning March 2006 On 23rd January 2006, the EFDA Associate Leader for JET Dr Jérôme Paméla presented the JET 2005 report and future programme in a seminar at the JET site. In his talk, Dr Paméla outlined the most recent news regarding fusion, the 2005 JET main events and scientific highlights, the 2006 JET programme, and planning beyond 2006. "2005 was a key year for fusion with the decision on siting ITER in Cadarache taken by the parties on 28 June 2005. India joined in November and ITER negotiations were completed in December 2005. The negotiation with Japan led to other projects being jointly prepared between the European Union and Japan, the so-called ‘Broader Approach’, a very good opportunity for faster development of fusion," stressed Dr Paméla. Some of the scientific results obtained at JET in 2005, which were outlined in the talk, are presented in this Bulletin. The current European fusion research strategy, reflected in the longer-term planning for JET, was also described in detail. In the upcoming campaigns significant enhancement of the JET facility, towards higher power with the ITER-like plasma shape will allow JET to perform important experiments in preparation of ITER. At the end of this year, an ITER-like ICRH Antenna is to be installed which will open new scope for reactor-relevant research at JET. These experiments shall be followed by the installation of an ITER-like first wall scheduled for 2008 (see the June 2005 JET Bulletin). , SCIENCE & 1 - TECHNOLOGY 0 IN SOCIETY ~ • • • ABOUT SATIS Science and Technology in Society units are designed to be used in conjunction with conventional science courses, particularly those leading to GCSE examinations. Each unit has links to major science topics as well as exploring important social and technological applications and issues. The units are self-contained and generally require about 2 periods (around 75 minutes) of classroom time. Each unit comprises Teachers' Notes (blue sheets) and Students' materials (white sheets). Full guidance on use is given in the Teachers' Notes accompanying each unit, which also include background information and suggest further resources. Each SATIS book contains ten units. The units are numbered in a system giving the number of the book followed by the number of the unit within that book. Thus the first unit in the first SATIS book is numbered 10l. In addition to the SATIS books, a general Teacher's Guide to the project is available, giving guidance on some of the teaching techniques involved as well as ideas for further activities. Many people from schools, universities,. industry and the professions have contributed to the writing, development and trials of the SATIS project. Walsall Tour Notes 1993 The West Midlands Group organised a walk that followed the Wyrley & Essington Canal from Walsall to Sneyd and used the newly re-opened passenger route from Bloxwich North to visit Churchbridge Railway interchange basin and the now demolished South Staffordshire Railway House near there, These notes reflect a time prior to the railway privatisation, when Regional Railways had charge of local services and Intercity operated the express trains in this region. Members from the East Midlands, West Midlands and North West groups attended. Lunch was arranged at the public house built beside the infilled locks at Sneyd. Tour leader ; Ray Shill. It is a modern brick and concrete structure, a product of 1970's architecture. Many will probably remember the old station, its wooden circular booking hall and frontage to Park Street. Some may even recall the transition, in 1978, when the old booking office was demolished to leave a gaping hole above the tracks below. In this period the station entrance was effected from Station Street across a temporary footbridge to an equally temporary booking office on the island platform. Then there was only one passenger service. Electric units, usually 304s, trundled from New Street to Walsall and back. Their diagram's might have involved exotic places such as Bletchley or Manchester, but for Walsall folk the train only went to Birmingham. If they wanted anywhere else it was simply change at Brummagen. -
