Parents/Guardians of CCMS Students, the Start of the 2016-2017 School Year Is Just Around the Corner, and This Means It Is Almos Parents/Guardians of CCMS Students, The start of the 2016-2017 school year is just around the corner, and this means it is almost time for Back to School shopping for clothing and school supplies. This spring our SBDM Council revised our student dress code. A revised student dress code and school supply lists are included in this communication. Please be sure to look at the correct grade level when looking at the school supply lists. If your student has not yet started their summer reading assignment please be sure to see the included information. All students are required to complete this assignment. Students will be completing a follow-up assignment for the book they read upon their return to school. While student schedules were briefly visible in Infinite Campus Portal earlier in the month, they are not yet finished so access was disabled. Because the schedules were not yet finished, it is possible that those seen by some students may not be accurate at this time. If your child saw and printed their schedule, please have them discard and pick up a new one during our schedule pick-up dates to avoid confusion. Schedules will be complete and ready for pickup on July 25th (6th Grade Students) and July 26th (7th and 8th Grade Students). Because student demographic information is reviewed and updated as needed at this time, a parent or legal guardian must be present. Schedules will only be released to a parent or legal guardian. Student fees of $60 are also collected at this time. We do take cash, check, or credit card. Please be sure to have picture i.d. with you to confirm your identity. If you have a Facebook account, but have not yet “friended” us, please visit our website to do so. Announcements are posted regularly. Please be aware of the upcoming activities shown below. July 7/25 – Student Fee and Schedule Pick-up for 6th Grade; 8-11 & 4-7 7/26 – Student Fee and Schedule Pick-up for 7th & 8th Grades; 8-11 & 4-7 August 8/1 – CCS Readifest 8/2 – Open House all Grades/Teachers; 5:00 – 7:00 pm 8/3 – Camp Camel; 8:00-3:00 pm; CCMS 8/10 – First Day for Students 8/24 – Fall Pictures Go Camels!!! Jason Smith Principal CCMS Dear Parents/Guardians of a CCMS student, As you may know, Campbell County Middle School is committed to the study of English-language arts. Our English-language arts teachers are dedicated to delivering rigorous and relevant instruction to our students, as well as providing multiple opportunities for students to showcase mastery of the English-language arts common core standards. As part of our English-language arts course, CCMS designed a summer reading program that all CCMS students participate in each summer to aid our students in understanding the following: • Reading can be an enjoyable pastime. • People read for pleasure, not just to acquire information. • Reading is a skill that improves with practice. • Reading can be a family activity; families in which parents read inspire children to read. • Reading is fundamental in providing a solid basis for academic achievement. We are asking that all CCMS students read a minimum of one novel or book this summer that is at the appropriate reading level of that student. You may refer to your student’s MAP reading results and their self-assessment of whether they should choose an “easy”, “average” or “challenging” book. MAP scores will be sent home with end-of-the-year report cards for all current CCMS students. Linked to the CCMS website and all CCMS English-language arts teachers’ websites will be a suggested reading list categorized by genre. Each novel or book will have listed with it the author, a short summary of the novel or book, and a general level (Easy, Average, Challenging). Titles include a range of levels so that every child can find a “just right” book. These books are suggestions and students are certainly encouraged to read others. Your involvement, as a parent, in the selection of books assures that the books’ content and themes are appropriate and respectful of your family’s values and interests. All good readers are active readers- predicting, drawing conclusions, making inferences, etc. about what they are reading. Active reading takes place before, during, and after we read. To aid your student in this process, we are asking that he or she complete a Summer Reading Log as he or she works his or her way through completing his or her chosen novel or book. The link for the Summer Reading Log can also be found on the CCMS website and all CCMS English-language arts teachers’ websites. This assignment should be turned into the child’s English-language arts teacher on or before August 12, 2016. During the first full week of school, students will be asked to complete a writing assessment to showcase their writing and language skills using evidence from the novel or book read this summer. Students will be allowed to use their Summer Reading Log to help craft their writing assessment. Keeping a thorough record of their reading and using details in the comments made for each entry will create a fantastic resource to have on hand during the assessment. We thank you for supporting our summer reading program. We anticipate that reading throughout the summer will broaden students’ knowledge, sharpen their skills, and allow them to experience the pleasure of getting lost in a good book. Late in ‘■"z 1977, when I was nerving up to start a fannish newzine to succeed KARASS, I found it difficult to find a title that had not been previously used. I looked through dictionaries, and the Thesaurus. I scanned Bruce Pelz’ voluminous fanzine index. I declined offers to revive titles like FANAC and STARSPINKLE. It became my contention that all the good sf story references usable as newzine titles had been taken.
