TVS Welcomes Gordon Korman October 16, 2014 Get a Jump on His Visit with Summer Reading! TVS welcomes Gordon Korman October 16, 2014 Get a jump on his visit with summer reading! Summer is the perfect time to read one (or more!) of Mr. Korman’s books. He’s got something to tickle every reader: sporty stories, action-packed adventures, historical fiction, fantasy or just plain funny. Mr. Korman will present programs to rising 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders. If you buy a book – hang on to it! Mr. Korman will autograph books when he is here! Mr. Korman has written over 80 books – these are few of our favorites! Gr. 4-6 Gr. 4-8 Gr. 4-8 Gr. 4-8 Gr. 5-8 Gr. 6-8 Gr. 6-8 Gr. 8 Swindle – (first in a six-book series): When an unscrupulous collector cons 6th grader Griffin Bing out of a valuable baseball card, Griffin gets together a few friends, and hatches a plan to get the card back. No More Dead Dogs – At first, 8th grader Wallace Wallace isn’t happy about missing football for detention, but finds he rather likes being a part of the school play. Titanic – (Unsinkable, Collision Course, S.O.S.) Meet Paddy (a young stowaway), Sophie (an American girl), Juliana, Alphie and others who find themselves aboard the Titanic on her fateful maiden voyage. Schooled – Capricon Anderson grew up with his grandmother, home schooled and off the grid. His integrity and good nature serve him well as he adjusts to Claverage Middle School – and it adjusts to him! The Hypnotists – Jackson Opus has the power to mesmerize others, and spends hours after school learning to control his talent at the Sentia Institute. The second book in the series, Memory Maze, is due out in August. Ungifted – Troublemaker Donovan Curtis pulled one prank too many, but is mistakenly sent to the Academy of Scholastic Distinction, rather than to detention. Ungifted is currently on the Texas Lone Star Reading list. Pop – High school junior Marcus is new in town, and hopes to make friends on the football team once school starts. Meanwhile, he meets an ex-gridiron star with memory problems, and works on his throwing technique. Son of the Mob – Vince’s family has deep connections with the Mafia, while his girlfriend’s dad is an FBI agent tasked with bringing them to justice. As he begins college, Vince tries to leave his Mafia ties behind. .

  • Dear Parents/Guardians of a CCMS Student
Dear Parents/Guardians of a CCMS student, As you may know, Campbell County Middle School devotes 100 minutes a day to the study of English-language arts. Those 100 minutes are dedicated to delivering rigorous and relevant instruction to our students, as well as providing multiple opportunities for students to showcase mastery of the English-language arts common core standards. As part of our English-language arts course, CCMS designed a summer reading program that all CCMS students participate in each summer to aid our students in understanding the following: • Reading can be an enjoyable pastime. • People read for pleasure, not just to acquire information. • Reading is a skill that improves with practice. • Reading can be a family activity; families in which parents read inspire children to read. • Reading is fundamental in providing a solid basis for academic achievement. We are asking that all CCMS students read a minimum of one novel or book this summer that is at the appropriate reading level of that student. You may refer to your student’s MAP reading results where the Lexile range, located in the block with his/her reading scores, will indicate the level at which your student is reading (Lexile® is the difficulty range of text that can be understood by the student 75% of the time). MAP scores will be sent home with end-of-the-year report cards for all current CCMS students. Linked to the CCMS website and all CCMS English-language arts teachers’ websites will be a suggested reading list categorized by genre. Each novel or book will have listed with it the author, a short summary of the novel or book, and the Lexile level.
