Its “à la carte” menu features a veritable feast of his favourite “dishes” — the album title being a thinly veiled allusion to the violinist’s reputation as a gourmand. A delicious appetiser (Massenet’s Méditation ) and a tasty dessert of delicacies from Sarasate and Kreisler dazzle at either end of this recital, which also features appealing, virtuosic delights by Kreisler (his arrangement of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Fantasy on Russian Themes), Glazunov ( Meditation ), Tchaikovsky (Scherzo in C minor) and Wieniawski ( Légende ). Sharing the celebrations is conductor Lawrence Foster — a natural choice, given that he had also worked with Perlman on his very first EMI recording (see volume 1). The violinist’s huge discography is brimful of miniatures such as these, a genre he has raised to new heights. This album brought seven new pieces to the party — Perlman had already recorded Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen , Rachmaninov’s Vocalise and Kreisler’s The Old Refrain and Schön Rosmarin (albeit, in three out of the four cases, in different arrangements). Accompanied by a studio band put together specially for the occasion and made up of players from London’s leading orchestras, Perlman sets out, with characteristic conviviality, humour and sensitivity, on a charm offensive of the sincerest kind. And if one aspect of his playing sets it apart from that of his contemporaries, it is the seductive power that emanates from his violin as soon as his bow hits the strings, like Heifetz’s energy and Sarasate’s elegance before him. Perlman’s purity of sound (Massenet), beautifully shaped lines (Wieniawski), technical perfection (Sarasate) and originality of inspiration (Rimsky-Korsakov, Kreisler) are all absolutely irresistible treats to suit any occasion. Concerto No. 1, written in 1927, is a vivid and witty example of his romantic spirit, exquisite melodies and rich yet transparent orchestration. Concerto No. 2, composed a decade later, is a darker, more dramatic and virtuosic work. The deeply-felt and dreamlike slow movement and passionate finale are tinged with bleak moments of somber agitation, suggestive of unfolding tragic events with the imminent introduction of the Fascist Racial Laws that led Castelnuovo-Tedesco to seek exile in the USA in 1939. The Four Dances from ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, part of the composer’s recurring fascination for the art of Shakespeare, are atmospheric, richly characterised and hugely enjoyable. This is their first performance and recording. After winning national and international awards, Alessandro Marangoni has appeared throughout Europe and America, as a soloist and as a © Zu Zweit chamber musician, collaborating with some of Italy’s leading performers.

Most works in the genre were written by virtuosos such as Leclair, Viotti, Spohr, Wieniawski and Ysaÿe, but composers of the calibre of Telemann, Michael Haydn, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Honegger and Bartók also took up the challenge. Given the restrictions imposed by having to combine the sound of two identical instruments whose primary role is more melodic than polyphonic, composers have tended to focus on thematic development, harmony and rhythm, resulting in highly imaginative explorations of the instrument’s technical potential. Jean-Marie Leclair (1697–1764), founder of the French violin school, wrote his 12 duets in an elegant idiom that brought together the best of the French and Italian styles.

Allegretto 14:53 t is not common for a great composer to dedicate two concertos to the cello. Cellists Ican be grateful to Shostakovich, who gave us a uniquely powerful and highly contrasted diptych. The First Concerto is one of the most played and popular cello concertos of all time, comprising explosive rhythmical energy and ultimate virtuosity alongside heartbreaking melodies. It is also sarcastic when Shostakovich quotes a distorted version of “Souliko”, Stalin’s favourite song, opposite the “D-S-C-H[=B]”-motif dominating the piece. The Second Concerto, less often performed, is one of Shostakovich’s greatest masterpieces, typical of his later style. It is characterized by a lyrical and often meditative spirit as much as by a contrasting strong symphonic power. The unity of its structure impresses, although it is composed of very different material including street songs, fanfares and dances, making it a total work of art. Performing these two masterpieces by Shostakovich in the same concert is rarely done as it is a great challenge for all the musicians involved. I am thrilled to share the stage with such great artists as Lawrence Foster and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra to perform and record these highlights of the cello repertoire and twentieth century music.

Violin Concerto Miniatures Arabella Steinbacher WDR Symphony Orchestra Lawrence Foster Maybe it is because of my name, which my parents gave me as great Strauss lovers, that his music touches me so much. Born into a world full of singing, as a child I used to sit under the grand piano in my "music cave" while my father rehearsed with singers. The famous duet from Arabella, which my parents engraved in our banisters, has accompanied me since I can remember. This duet was finally the impetus to record an album with only works by Richard Strauss. • Overture Opera Guides
overture opera guides in association with We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with Overture Publishing on this series of opera guides and to build on the work English National Opera did over twenty years ago on the Calder Opera Guide Series. As well as reworking and updating existing titles, Overture and ENO have commissioned new titles for the series and all of the guides will be published to coincide with repertoire being staged by the company at the London Coliseum. We hope that these guides will prove an invaluable resource now and for years to come, and that by delving deeper into the history of an opera, the poetry of the libretto and the nuances of the score, read- ers’ understanding and appreciation of the opera and the art form in general will be enhanced. John Berry Artistic Director, ENO The publisher John Calder began the Opera Guides series under the editorship of the late Nicholas John in association with English National Opera in 1980. It ran until 1994 and eventu- ally included forty-eight titles, covering fifty-eight operas. The books in the series were intended to be companions to the works that make up the core of the operatic repertory. They contained articles, illustrations, musical examples and a complete libretto and singing translation of each opera in the series, as well as bibliographies and discographies. The aim of the present relaunched series is to make available again the guides already published in a redesigned format with new illustrations, some newly commissioned articles, updated reference sections and a literal translation of the libretto that will enable the reader to get closer to the intentions and meaning of the original.
