Future Cities Collective LaneZero Ryerson University/University of Toronto Attached Housing Project Summary Major cities like Toronto are struggling to simultaneously densify while maintaining a sense of community. The sustainable future of our cities depends on finding new ways to inhabit existing infrastructure. LaneZero seamlessly integrates into currently thriving neighborhoods as an on-grade, net-zero energy laneway home. Relevance of Project to the Goals of the Competition In downtown Toronto, low density detached residential neighborhoods contain more than 250 linear kilometers of publicly owned laneways. This underutilized space sitting on valuable land provides a unique opportunity for unobtrusive densification. Future Cities Collective exemplifies possible laneway housing opportunities in Toronto, promoting the efficient use of public and private property in the city. Design Strategy and Key Points In order for LaneZero to achieve net-zero site energy, the design strategies employed follow a three-tiered design approach (1) Minimize conditioning needs through envelope, geometry, mass and orientation, (2) Passive conditioning strategies through natural ventilation, solar heat gains and daylighting, (3) Supplemental active conditioning through an efficient conditioning system. LaneZero brings life to laneways through comfortable, efficient housing, intended to make laneway homes a desirable and sustainable way to live. Congratulations, Jordan! The department is co-sponsoring a two-day conference on film and spirituality, to take place at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on April 3rd and 4th. Prof. John Caruana will be one of the speakers. The keynote speaker will be legendary director and screenwriter Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Affliction). Christine (she/hers) a second-generation Vietnamese Canadian born in Mississauga and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Growing up, Christine had a determination for knowledge and leading others. At Brookview Middle School, Christine participated in Hockey HEROS (Hockey Education Reaching Out to Society) mentor-based ice hockey program that helps empowers at-risk youth. From the lessons she learned from the program, Christine was recognized by CIBC as, “Most Inspirational" (2012) through her initiatives working with others as a team. Her legacy carried onto University as a community organizer and ambassador for the Vietnamese community. In the second year of her undergrad, Christine relaunched the University of Toronto Scarborough Vietnamese Student's Association (UTSVA) by providing students the opportunities to network and build leadership within themselves. After one year, the United Vietnamese Students Association Eastern Canada (UVSAEC) and United North American Vietnamese Students Association (UNAVSA) acknowledge Christine, "VSA Member of the Year (2018)". Since 2017, Christine continues to be socially active in school and the Vietnamese community by encouraging others to join leadership initiatives and teaching about civic engagement in her social circles. Christine wishes to pursue social justice and education by eliminating barriers to marginalized communities by working with DOV delegates and Federal MPs towards challenging and reducing inequality in Canada. Resolutions The Secretary read the following four resolutions for departed Members of Corporation: Patricia Carr Brückmann Prof. Patricia Carr Brückmann died Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at the age of 86. Born in Boston in 1932, she attended Trinity College in Washington, D.C. as an undergraduate studying English. While visiting Harvard University, she met John Brückmann, whom she married in 1958. Patricia received a Master of Arts degree and a doctorate in English from the University of Toronto, her thesis entitled “Fancy’s Maze: A Study of the Early Poetry of Alexander Pope”. She began teaching English at Trinity College, where her research focused on 18th century literature. Over her years at Trinity she contributed to numerous journals and publications, and in 1996 completed her book A Manner of Correspondence: A Study of the Scriblerus Club.
