BRAND NEW VIEW 2010 ANNUAL REPORT YMCA 0F THE INLAND NORTHWEST The mission of the YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all! LEARN GROW THRIVE The decision to photograph Mark Neupert, Corporate Board Chair and Rig Riggins, YMCA President and CEO with a group of our youngest members, made it quickly evident what the YMCA is all about. The energy and joy of youth and the promise of strong families is the perspective that moms and their little ones best exemplify. The challenge to manage those futures in the healthiest way possible is a critical focus of the YMCA. BRAND NEW VANTAGE POINT A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND PRESIDENT Even as children, we know how exciting it is to experience something that is “brand new.” Our YMCA has been fortunate enough to string a number of those “brand new” experiences together over the course of the past year that has resulted in our organization providing programs and services for 1 in 9 residents in Spokane County and now being able to look forward from a whole new vantage point. The past year has produced some amazing accomplishments: • All three of our facility branches celebrated birthdays…ten years for our Valley branch and one year for both our Central and North branches. • Our Central branch has received the prestigious 2010 Excellence in Masonry “Best on the Block” award and our North branch has achieved a LEED Gold certification for new construction from the U.S. Green Building Council. • Membership levels at all three branches are at an all-time high and have more than tripled over the past couple of years. • Nearly 30% of our membership and program participants have received financial assistance from us to insure that Y programs are affordable for everybody. The level of financial assistance provided by our Y has increased by a dramatic $1 million over the previous year to $1.6 million. • Camp Reed again this year has operated at capacity and served 1,870 youth. • Our teen programs will be greatly enhanced thanks to two new grants: $25,000 from the Raikes Foundation for a program quality assessment initiative and $24,000 from the Inland Northwest Community Foundation to support key teen programs. • Our Y is only one of ten in the nation to receive a $50,000 start-up grant from the Y of the USA to establish a new research based YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program. This is only one of numerous community healthy initiatives that focus on chronic disease prevention and impacting youth obesity. • We have added another 46 new members to our Endowment Heritage Club to help insure that future generations will be able to participate in Y programs. Our YMCA is also participating in a “brand new” national brand revitalization designed to increase understanding of the impact that Ys make in communities all across the nation. The refreshed logo, with its multiple color options and new, contemporary look, better reflects the vibrancy of the Y and the diversity of the communities it serves. Through our rebranding effort, we hope to tell our Y story more broadly to help more young people reach their potential, help more families and individuals achieve better health outcomes, and encourage everyone to get involved and make our community a better place. And finally, from our newly elevated vantage point, we have a “brand new view” of our future as we are developing a “brand new” strategic plan. Action plans to support three breakthrough strategies that will drive our Y and its work for the next five years are being developed: • “The Mobile Y”- Taking the Y outside of our facilities and more deeply into our community. • “The e Y” – Creating robust ways to communicate and operate electronically. • “Y Connect” – Identifying collaborative opportunities with like-minded organizations to enhance the delivery of programs and better achieve our mission. We look forward to enriching significantly more lives and more families in the years ahead and to play our part in strengthening our community. Thanks to you, our friends and supporters, for your steadfast support and for helping us impact and change lives for so many people. Your support has positively benefitted someone you may never meet, but please be assured that you have helped make the seemingly impossible possible for that youth or family!
