The strengths that my father and son demonstrated when they faced serious, medical traumas and life-altering circumstances made my troubles seem insignificant by comparison. To Nicolle McKenna, I owe special thanks for helping me understand Gertrude Stein’s cubist literature from a queer perspective. Under normal circumstances, the dedication of a manuscript ends with the author’s family members and perhaps, if she is lucky, it extends to some of her closest friends, thereby encompassing the individuals that comprise a writer’s emotional, physical and spiritual foundations. From the medieval French author Christine de Pizan, I have learned that the existence of a manuscript can involve the interventions of highly learned and courageous individuals, who also happen to embody Reason, Justice and Rectitude (Droiture). It turns out that we do not choose our amanuenses; sometimes they choose us for reasons we do not understand at the time. Therefore, I also dedicate this manuscript to the following amanuenses, who made it possible for me to graduate from the doctoral program at the University of Alberta: Hank Stam, Jonathan Hart, Leendert (Leo) Mos, and Murray McGillivray. Without the assistance of these gifted mentors and academic leaders, this dissertation literally would not have existed. These individuals possess special insights into the ways in which great institutions are built from the ephemeral “stuff” of ideas, dreams, visions, beliefs, passions and personal losses. Abstract This dissertation explores the connections that exist between Stein’s late nineteenth century psychological studies at Harvard University, her fin-de-siècle brain research at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, and her early twentieth century cubist writings. This research is important for literary scholars and neuraesthetic researchers alike, because Stein produced a secret series of cubist brain maps from approximately 1912 to 1935, and then published her first explicit brain map in The Geographical History of America or the Relation of Human Nature to the Human Mind, in 1936. The cubist brain maps that Stein produced during this period can be conceptualized as evolving, neuraesthetic writing practices that reflect her scientific insights and artistic associations, in direct and indirect ways. One of the primary differences between Stein’s cubist writings and those of her literary contemporaries is that she deploys the cubist portraiture strategies of Pablo Picasso, for the purpose of representing the human central nervous system in creative ways. In addition to exploring the scientific meanings of Stein’s multidimensional, performative and introspective cubist puns, this study examines how Stein uses color in her modernist writings, as a means of anticipating the visual effects of future scientific discoveries and connectivity maps, such as the “Brainbow” mapping system, which uses the fluorescent protein from the jellyfish Aequorea Victoria to label the central nervous systems of genetically modified mice with distinguishable colors. Also, this project examines how Stein uses color words and other simple devices from the English language to portray the brain’s cellular structures, neural networks and neuroanatomical features in her modernist writings. This study’s primary aim is to explore how Stein’s dissociative writings function within western culture as neuraesthetic modes of masterpiece creation, brain representation and consciousness translation. Through the serial production of cubist brain maps, Stein posed important questions about the modern science of the reading brain. By developing allegorical methods of brain representation, she contributes to the western practice of “neuroesthetics” by foregrounding the roles creative writing can play in the production of imaginary, laboratory practices and imaginative, brain imaging technologies.     American Modernist Writers: How They Touched the Private Realm of Life Leyna Ragsdale Summer II 2006 Introduction The issue of personal identity is one which has driven American writers to create a body of literature that not only strives to define the limitations of human capacity, but also makes a lasting contribution in redefining gender roles and stretching the bounds of freedom. A combination of several historical aspects leading up to and during the early 20th century such as Women's Suffrage and the Great War caused an uprooting of the traditional moral values held by both men and women and provoked artists to create a new American identity through modern art and literature. Gertrude Stein used her writing as a tool to express new outlooks on human sexuality and as a way to educate the public on the repression of women in order to provoke changes in society. Being a pupil of Stein's, Ernest Hemingway followed her lead in the modernist era and focused his stories on human behavior in order to educate society on the changes of gender roles and the consequences of these changes. Being a man, Hemingway focused more closely on the way that men's roles were changing while Stein focused on women's roles. However, both of these phenomenal early 20th century modernist writers made a lasting impact on post WWI America and helped to further along the inevitable change from the unrealistic Victorian idea of proper conduct and gender roles to the new modern American society. The Roles of Men and Women The United States is a country that has been reluctant to give equal rights to women and has pushed them into subservient roles.

    Forming Unity in Modernity: The Use of Collage in Tender Buttons and The Waste Land Esmé Hogeveen Esmé Hogeveen looks at two modernists who might well have arrived on Earth from different planets—Gertrude Stein and T.S. Eliot. While both writers struggle with how to make art from a fractured reality, Stein’s Tender Buttons addresses this at a very basic level of representation, and Eliot’s The Waste Land works at the level of cultural history. What unites them, Hogeveen persuasively argues, is their logic, the logic of collage. Eliot and Stein seem to arrive at different solutions, then, but use a single aesthetic. Or, it may well be that the aesthetic of collage is the solution. It’s not just the confusion of modernism, then, or the end point these writers reach in struggling with that confusion, but the process they go through en route. - Dr. Leonard Diepeveen In their respective poems Tender Buttons and The Waste Land , Gertrude Stein and T.S. Eliot use collage as a means to depict the decay of meaning in modern life. Stein and Eliot find the more formally cohesive aesthetics of the past unable to convey the meanings portrayed in the present, and so they turn to collage. Operating both as an aesthetic technique and as a philosophic conception, collage is able to contain the contradictions of modern life through its cut-and-paste approach to configuring appositional logic. Stein and Eliot's use of collage are not meant to confuse the reader for the sake of affirming the destabilization of meaning in the twentieth century.

PURPOSE OF MY THESIS This research paper on Gertrude Stein's text, Tender Buttons, served as a means of discussion about the different categories in which it has been placed by critics and readers. It is an insight into the life and creativity of Gertrude Stein. Even more, it allows insight into the ideas of critics and readers and how classification of such a work is formed. Five main categories are discussed, in which evidence from readers is given for and! or against that category. There is also a chapter on my personal reading of Tender Buttons and why I have been inspired by both Gertrude Stein and this text in particular. There are specific examples from the text and also examples of my own attempts to make sense out of this text. This paper was a journey through systems of research, criticism, and self-understanding.     6 Production and Reproduction: Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) Rod Rosenquist The identity of Gertrude Stein – high-modernist author, Paris salon-hostess and American celebrity – was the subject of much speculation throughout her career, especially in the wake of her bestselling volume The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933). While numerous mass- media journalists quoted her and speculated about her writing or her personality, and while her publisher would label her ‘the publicity hound of the world’, Stein herself would retreat inward, suggesting that as others increasingly recognized her, ‘Well you see I did not know myself […] So many people knowing me I was I no longer.’1 This tension between the private Stein and the public Stein – that ‘there are two Steins’, as a photograph she was sent would lead her to observe – provides the focus for a number of studies of her role in modernist culture both as author and celebrity.2 Bryce Conrad (1995), Steven Watson (1998), Kirk Curnutt (2000), Alyson Tischler (2003), Loren Glass (2004), Karen Leick (2009), Deborah M. Mix (2010), Jonathan Goldman (2011), Timothy Galow (2011) and others have written about Stein’s self-staging, her persona as author or as central figure of modernism, or about her engagements with popular culture, mass audiences and the marketplace. That Stein was a major celebrity as well as an author of some of the most provocative aesthetic writings of the early twentieth century is clearly established in critical studies.     Subjects, Objects, and the Fetishisms of Modernity in the Works of Gertrude Stein KATE LIVETT A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy UNSW Submitted for examination August 2006 Abstract This thesis reopens the question of subject/object relations in the works of Gertrude Stein, to argue that the fetishisms theorised by Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, and later Walter Benjamin and Michael Taussig, and problematised by feminist critics such as Elizabeth Grosz, are central to the structure of those relations. My contribution to Stein scholarship is twofold, and is reflected in the division of my thesis into Part One and Part Two. Part One of this thesis establishes a model for reading the interconnections between subjects and objects in Stein’s work; it identifies a tension between two related yet different structures. The first is a fetishistic relation of subjects to objects, associated by Stein with materiality and nineteenth-century Europe, and the identity categories of the “genius” and the “collector”. The second is a “new” figuration of late modernity in which the processual and tacility are central. This latter is associated by Stein with America and the twentieth century, and was a structure that she, along with other modernist artists, was developing. Further, Part One shows how these competing structures of subject/object relations hinge on Stein’s problematic formulations of self, nation, and artistic production. Part Two uses the model established in Part One to examine the detailed playing- out of the tensions and dilemmas of subject/object relations within several major Stein texts.
