The 4th Annual Clyde Best Invitational Football Tournament will feature two of the world’s renowned football Academies. West Ham United Academy of the UK and A.S. Saint-Etienne of France will compete against Bermuda’s finest young players involved in our National Academy Program. The tournament is a celebration of the incredible legacy of our hero Clyde Best, ex-West Ham and Bermuda International football icon! The tournament is also an important key in the Strategic Plan of the Association which above all else provides the opportunity to prepare our youth players for upcoming CFU and CONCACAF tournaments, provides a barometer of where our National Academy players see themselves in relation to other football countries of similar age and continues to help build our ties with other top football programs. There is no question that A.S. Saint-Etienne Youth Academy under the guidance of Director, Luc Bruder and Alain Blachon is one of the many outstanding Football Academies in France and forms the development program for the most successful Football Club in French Football History. In addition to winning 10 League Championships, St. Etienne has also won 6 French Cup Titles and 2 UEFA Cups. Some of Frances' most respected football players wore the St. Etienne jersey and the list includes French football legends Michele Platini, Laurent Blanc, Willy Sagnol, Aime Jacquet, Jacques Santini and Dominique Rocheteau. • Chapter Iv Individual Player Contributions in European Soccer
Guy Wilkinson PhD Thesis (2017) CHAPTER IV INDIVIDUAL PLAYER CONTRIBUTIONS IN EUROPEAN SOCCER ABSTRACT This paper looks at applying new techniques to predict match outcomes in professional soccer. To achieve this models are used which measure the individual contributions of soccer players within their team. Using data from the top 25 European soccer leagues, the individual contribution of players is measured using high dimensional fixed effects models. Nine years of results are used to produce player, team and manager estimates. A further year of results is used to check for predictive accuracy. Since this has useful applications in player scouting the paper will also look at how well the models rank players. The findings show an average prediction rate of 45% with all methods showing similar rankings for player productivity. While the model highlights the most productive players there is a bias towards players who produce and prevent goals directly. This results in more attackers and defenders ranking highly than midfield players. There is potential for these techniques to be used against the betting market as most models produce better performance than many betting firms. Guy Wilkinson PhD Thesis (2017) 1. INTRODUCTION This paper focuses on producing models with a high prediction rate in professional soccer. The main challenge is to produce accurate estimations of player ability, a problem analogous to research on worker productivity. The study of worker productivity is of great value to businesses in almost every industry. Hiring the best workers will improve the overall performance of business and increase profit. It is of great importance for firms to be able to screen potential employees efficiently to determine their value.

MERIT report on Media Value in Football Season 2014/15 Summary - Main results Authors: Pedro García del Barrio Director Académico de MERIT social value Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) Bruno Montoro Ferreiro Analista de MERIT social value Asier López de Foronda López Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) With the collaboration of: Josep Maria Espina Serra (UIC Barcelona) Arnau Raventós Gascón (UIC Barcelona) Ignacio Fernández Ponsin (UIC Barcelona) www.meritsocialvalue.com 2 Presentation MERIT (Methodology for the Evaluation and Rating of Intangible Talent) is part of an academic project with vast applications in the field of business and company management. This methodology has proved to be useful in measuring the economic value of intangible talent in professional sport and in other entertainment industries. In our estimations – and in the elaboration of the rankings – two elements are taken into consideration: popularity (degree of interest aroused between the fans and the general public) and media value (the level of attention that the mass media pays). The calculations may be made at specific points in time during a season, or accumulating the news generated during a particular period: weeks, months, years, etc. Additionally, the homogeneity amongst the measurements allows for a comparison of the media value status of individuals, teams, institutions, etc. Together with the measurements and rankings, our database allows us to conduct analyses on a wide variety of economic and business problems: estimates of the market value (or “fair value”) of players’ transfer fees; calculation of the brand value of individuals, teams and leagues; valuation of the economic return from alliances between sponsors; image rights contracts of athletes and teams; and a great deal more.
