Karyotypes of the seven Pyrrhocactus Introduction species were studied for the first time with Feulgen staining and CMA/DAPI banding. [email protected] aBstraCt.–in the context of a research project on cactaceae family of the southern region of Peru, a population of the genus Islaya was particularly critical. the taxonomic study carried allowed to describe a new species called Islaya camanaensis whith reference to the province of Camaná where it occurs between 900 and 1050 m a.s.l.. such species shows clear taxonomic differences from the other Islaya species occurring in Peru, as far as root and stem; ribs, areolas, lilac flowers, fruits and seeds are concerned. the species, which is soli- tary in its habitat, blooms in september and bears fruits in november december. an average of 7 individuals in 100 m2 were evaluated in a transect of 50 km. its main threat are the roads and concession in areas that have been delivered to expand agriculture and housing. Pereskia bleo, a leafy cactus, is a medicinal plant native to West and South America and distributed in tropical and subtropical areas. It is traditionally used as a dietary vegetable, barrier hedge, water purifier, and insect repellant and for maintaining health, detoxification, prevention of cancer, and/or treatment of cancer, hypertension, diabetes, stomach ache, muscle pain, and inflammatory diseases such as dermatitis and rheumatism. The aim of this paper was to provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the botanical characteristics, traditional usage, phytochemistry, pharmacological activities, and safety of P. bl eo .A literature search using MEDLINE (via PubMed), Science direct, Scopus and Google scholar and China Academic Journals Full- Text Database (CNKI) and available eBooks and books in the National University of Singapore libraries in English and Chinese was conducted. -

A taxonomic backbone at the genus level is provided that reflects the current state of knowledge and accepts 749 genera for the order. A detailed review of the literature of the past two decades shows that enormous progress has been made in understanding overall phylogenetic relationships in Caryophyllales. The process of re-circumscribing families in order to be monophyletic appears to be largely complete and has led to the recognition of eight new families (Anacampserotaceae, Kewaceae, Limeaceae, Lophiocarpaceae, Macarthuriaceae, Microteaceae, Montiaceae and Talinaceae), while the phylogenetic evaluation of generic concepts is still well underway. As a result of this, the number of genera has increased by more than ten percent in comparison to the last complete treatments in the Families and genera of vascular plants” series. A checklist with all currently accepted genus names in Caryophyllales, as well as nomenclatural references, type names and synonymy is presented. Notes indicate how extensively the respective genera have been studied in a phylogenetic context. -

Entre las formas de vida, las terófitas presentan el mayor número de especies en la flora (43%), pero están totalmente ausentes durante los años secos. Dos unidades de vegetación pueden ser identificadas: matorral desértico de Nolana peruviana, en las quebradas y laderas bajo 500 m de altitud, y matorral desértico de Eulychnia iquiquensis y Ephedra breana, en las laderas sobre 500 m. Se discuten algunos aspectos relativos a la flora y la relación entre el clima y la vegetación. Palabras clave: Ambientes áridos, Biogeografía, Clima, Comunidades vegetales, Desierto de Atacama. ABSTRACT Observations on the flora and vegetation of Tocopilla surroundings (22ºS, Chile). The flora of Tocopilla and adjacent zones is composed of 146 vascular plant species. Among the life- forms, the therophytes represent the highest proportion of the flora (43%), but are absent during the dry years. -

August 2017 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the August 2017 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. We have a great line-up of bird literature for you this month. For birdwatchers we have The Birds of the Falkland Islands: An Annotated Checklist (part of the former BOU checklist series), The Birder's Guide to Africa (August), The Birds of Colonsay and Oronsay: An Island Avifauna and Bird Atlas, and a 2nd edition of A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Australia (November). Both collectors and curators will be interested in Atlas of Feathers for Western Palearctic Birds (Passerines) - Concise Edition (December), which is the first of a two-part publication. Other titles to do with conservation are The Last Flight of the Ancient Guide of Hajj: Northern Bald Ibis – The Most Threatened Bird of the Middle East and Christopher Helm's Birds New to Science: 50 Years of Avian Discoveries (January). For those interested in bird art, we have Raptors: Portraits of Birds of Prey (September) by Princeton Architectural Press, and our very own BTO, who is publishing Flight Lines: Tracking the Wonders of Bird Migration (August) in cooperation with the Society of Wildlife Artists. Lastly, Faber & Faber will publish Owl Sense (September), which looks like another memoir on the bond between humans and birds of prey. We also have a strong list of herpetology titles this month, and readers can look forward to two new titles from Chimaira, The Herpetofauna of Corfu and Adjacent Islands (available now) and The Snakes of Java, Bali and Surrounding Islands (September), while John Beaufoy is publishing three Naturalist's Guides to reptiles of Sri Lanka (August), Bali (August) and Australia (August). -

ADVANCED Exhibitor has won 41 or more blue ribbons. No Commercial sellers. OPEN Exhibitor must have won 80 or more blue ribbons or be a commercial seller of Cacti or Succulents.
