The publication of information about the quantity and quality of deposits over large areas is intended to provide a comprehensive factual background against which planning. decisions can be made. The interdepartmental Mineral Resources Consultative Committee recommended that limestone should be investigated, and following a feasibility study initiated in 1970 by the Institute and funded by the Department of Education and Science, the Mineral Assessment Unit began systematic surveys in 1972. The work is now being financed by the Department of the Environment and is being undertaken with the cooperation of members of the British Quarrying and Slag Federation. This Report describes the limestone and dolomite resources of some 91 km2 of country around Monyash, Derbyshire, shown on the accompanying 1:25 000 resource map SK 16. The survey was conducted by Dr F. C. Cox and Mr D. McC. Bridge with the assistance of Mrs L. C. Jones and Messrs J. T. Dove and J. L. Grayson. The work was controlled from a sub-unit based in Leeds (officer-in-charge, J. H. Hull) and is based on a geological survey at the 1:lO 560 scale conducted in 1968-1972 by Dr N. Aitkenhead, Mr J. I. Chisholm and Mr D. Price of the Institute's North-West England Field Unit. The first two officers also contributed the section on the geology. Mr J. W. Gardner, CBE (Land Agent) was responsible for negotiating access to land for drilling. The ready cooperation of land owners and tenants in this work i-s gratefully acknowledged. A. W. Classification of limestone rocks (based on Folk, 1959) 37 SUMMARY The study of samples specially collected from 23 cored boreholes and 15 major exposures, together with information from the records and geological maps of the Institute of Geological Sciences, form the basis of the assessment of limestone and dolomite resources in the Monyash area, Derbyshire. Eighteen boreholes were drilled under contract for the Mineral Assessment Unit and in addition, members of the Unit drilled five shallow holes using a small portable drilling machine. The limestones have been classified on the basis of their calcium carbonate content, and the accompanying 1:25 000 resource map shows the distribution of the recognised categories of limestone in the uppermost 10 m of strata, for which most information is available. Horizontal sections constructed from the borehole data and from knowledge of the regional geology, indicate the categories likely to be encountered below this depth. Five resource blocks have been outlined and for each, the geology, categories of limestones and occurrences of other rocks are described. In mediaeval times, the clergy, monks and canons sang the eight daily offices standing in their stalls. By the tenth century the stalls were partly enclosed with wooden sides and backs to protect the occupants from the cold and draughts of an unheated building. The word "stall" means a place to stand. We still use the term in "cattle stalls". Although fold-up seats were introduced in the eleventh century, these could be used only for the Epistle and Gradual at Mass and the Responses at Vespers. By the twelfth century, small ledges on the undersides of seats were referred to as indulgences, or in Latin misericordia, meaning acts of mercy.

The overall aim is to use pollen analysis to resolve the relative influence of climate and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on the cessation of tufa production at Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale in the White Peak region of the Peak District using past vegetation cover as a proxy. Modern White Peak pollen – vegetation relationships are examined to aid semi- quantitative interpretation of sub-fossil pollen assemblages. Moss-polsters and vegetation surveys incorporating novel methodologies are used to produce new Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates (RPPE) for 6 tree taxa, and new association indices for 16 herb taxa. RPPE’s of Alnus, Fraxinus and Pinus were similar to those produced at other European sites; Betula values displaying similarity with other UK sites only. RPPE’s for Fagus and Corylus were significantly lower than at other European sites. Pollen taphonomy in woodland floor mosses in Derbyshire and East Yorkshire is investigated.

A new methodology has been developed, which uses tin as a marker for recycled Roman lead. Analysis of lead artefacts shows that along the Derwent/ Trent/ Humber corridor recycled Roman lead was continuing in use in the 5th-7th centuries, and plentiful fresh lead first appears in the record in the 9th century, with no tin. There is a widespread gap in artefacts from the 8th century, which implies that recycled lead had been exhausted. The main source of Anglo-Saxon lead in this region is probably the Derbyshire Peak District, but the lead isotope analysis is not definitive, due to the normal constraints such as the overlap of ore field signatures. Also the analytical method gives a broad peak, which reduces discrimination. The recent method of Pollard and Bray, which asks about what differences in lead isotope ratios show rather than provenance have been employed.

Acknowledgements 50 © Dr Michael Nevell: Heritage Statement: Former Quaker Chapel, Monyash, Derbyshire Dales, May 2020 Summary In April 2020 Dr Michael Nevell, archaeology consultant, was commissioned by Mr Neil Gould to produce a Heritage Statement for the Quaker Chapel, Monyash, Derbyshire Dales, an area that is part of the Peak District National Park (centred on NGR SK 14993 66703). The Quaker Meeting house was built in the period 1711 to 1717 and documentary and structural evidence indicates that it was adapted from an earlier cottage/farmhouse on this site. The building is a Grade II listed heritage asset and is situated on the northern side of the village of Monyash on Chapel Street, within the conservation area. This document has been produced to support a Planning Application for the conversion of the former community building into an open market priced house. This document aims to provide sufficient heritage information to allow the Peak District National Park Authority to determine the application. The relative significance of the building has been considered with reference to the four areas of heritage values outlined by Historic England (formerly English Heritage) in their Conservation Principles Policies and Guidance, and the Secretary of State’s criteria for assessing the importance of national monuments.

We got the 6.1 out of Matlock towards Bakewell. Matlock is very busy right now with a new road by passing the town being constructed. So if you know Matlock on a good Summers day without the hold ups, and just the roundabout you can imagine the traffic jams being caused. I was glad I wasn't called in for Statute Duty. The Surveyor of the Highways would have to find a substitute if I had been. The driver manoeuvres carefully around cyclists in Darley Dale risking life and limb on a busy A6 while across the broad valley on the hillside the sleepy hamlet of Stanton Lees looks on, far from the madding crowd. Who had all gone to Bakewell to escape the chaos in Matlock. We had a good half hour or so to wait for our connection and it was going to be tricky trying to stay out of the shops, especially when Patricia noticed a sale at the first shop we pass after getting of the bus. "It's going to be hot today, we need to stock up on water, " I said. We go to a shop where supplies of the stuff have virtually run out. We look for a bowser. All this is nicely making the seconds tick away.

It marks the seventeen entrances to its parish with boundary stones each inscribed with a text chosen by members of the parish. A public manifestation of private thoughts and feelings at the start of a new century. Started in 1999 and fi nished in 2006,Sites of Meaning was run by a team of parishioners who raised funds, Middleton by Youlgrave collected text for the inscriptions, commissioned stones from artists and masons, and installed the fi nished boundary markers. Over two hundred people took part in Sites of Meaning, including the local community and primary school, schools and colleges throughout the region, local and national artists and other professionals. At fi rst funding was raised more or less on a stone to stone basis. But as the project gathered momentum and the team gained experience and confi dence, larger funds were sought as projects were designed Longdale to involve more of the surrounding community. The Sculpture Residency in 2002 saw Amanda Wray carve a stone for site 8 in the village playground. Other Stones – Other Meanings explored local history and archaeology, and generated poetry through Youlgrave Primary School. InscribeNOW completed Sites of Meaning with a photographic residency and workshops, the generation of publicity and educational material, and a fi nal celebration re-uniting all those who have worked on Sites of Meaning.

    The Growth of Geological Knowledge in the Peak District Trevor D. Ford Abstract: The development of geological knowledge in the Peak District from the 18th century to the present day is reviewed. It is accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography. Introduction lead miners made practical use of geological principles as early as the 17th century (Rieuwerts, Geology has changed in the last two centuries from 1984).
