Palo Alto, CA March 1st, 2002 – HP Labs is proud to announce the availability of the LEAP Agent Platform on the Jornada 560 series of smart handheld products running the HP MicroChaiVM application development environment, Version 2.0 Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP) edition.

Software agents running on nomadic devices provide greater autonomy to applications, allowing them to be proactive and to delegate tasks in both connected and disconnected modes. Please refer to http://www.hpl.hp.com/org/stl/maas/ for more information on HP’s involvement in agents for mobility research.

“Our agents can now run either on appliances under LEAP, or on servers under our BlueJADE environment which combines the Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) compliant JADE 2.5 agent toolkit with the robustness of the HP Bluestone HPAS 8.0 application server and other HPL technologies” says Bernard Burg, HP Labs “To our knowledge, HP is the first company having agents on both its appliances as well as on its application servers, allowing us to move towards deployment of end-to-end applications in truly mobile environments.”

HP MicroChaiVM 2.0 with MIDP, part of the HP Netaction portfolio, enables Java-based services to be delivered to any mobile information devices or mobile phones. HP MicroChaiVM is the first MIDP implementation available on the Pocket PC 2002 platform and the first to be integrated into a PDA, bringing both Java and .Net functionality. HP MicroChaiVM 2.0 will be available Summer 2002 on HP’s “devnet” developer’s portal located at http://devnet.hp.com. To learn more
