Music videos are one form of popular culture that utilizes cross-racial or cultural images which appear to be racially inclusive, but when closely analyzed are firmly rooted in traditional stereotypes and take cultural expressions out of their proper sociohistorical contexts. This process is called cultural appropriation. Too often, researchers have determined what modes of appropriation are or are not harmful to various groups without any input from those groups. In this study I provide a space for racial groups whose creations or expressions are habitually appropriated to tell us which modes of appropriation they consider to be harmful. I use a dual qualitative method—music video content analysis and focus group interviews with 61 participants—to investigate representations of nonwhite cultures and how audiences of color interpret the use of their cultures within popular music

    PORT NECHES– GROVES ISD YOUR SCHOOLS May 2013 PNGISD Students Win Local Contests Two Port Neches Middle School students placed in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest sponsored by our local VFW. Colton Stone placed 1st and Madison Hamby, 2nd for their “What I Would Tell America’s Founding Fathers” essay. They will be honored at a banquet at the end of the year. PN-G High School students Gabby Jordan and Amber Guthrie had artworks selected from over 170 entries, for inclusion in the annual Law Day art competition held by the U.S. eastern District Court. These girls were honored at a reception and given gift cards. Their works will hang in the Federal Courthouse for all to admire for a year!!! The LAWS OF LIFE Essay Contest (a writing contest sponsored by the Better Business Bureau) offers students a chance to talk about what really matters in life. All middle schools and high schools in Jefferson County were invited to participate. Local winners from Port Neches Middle School are 8th graders Brenna Bryan and Korinna Gonzalez and 6th grader Shelby Euton. Their essays were entered in the regional contest. Out of over 2,200 LAWS OF LIFE essays written for the 2012- 2013 program season, Shelby Euton has been selected as 1 of 10 LAWS OF LIFE finalists. She was honored at a banquet held on April 16, 2013, at the Holiday Inn & Suites Beaumont Plaza. Thanks to all PNMS students who shared their core values and ideals.
