Tutkimuksen sisältämät neljä artikkelia kattavat Faltinin aktiivisen työuran vuosien 1856−1896 välillä. Tuona aikana Faltin toimi muun muassa Viipurin taide- musiikkielämän herättäjänä (Artikkeli I), ensimmäisen Suomeen perustetun ooppera- laitoksen kapellimestarina (Artikkeli II), kansainvälisiä musiikkivirtauksia Suomessa esittelevänä Wagner-pioneerina (Artikkeli III) sekä Helsingin yliopiston musiikin- opettajana (Artikkeli IV). Kaikkia artikkeleita yhdistävä näkökulma on tarkastella Faltinin toiminnan vaiku- tuksia suomalaisen taidemusiikkikulttuurin kehittymiseen 1800-luvun jälkipuolella samoin kuin valottaa Faltinille ominaista pyrkimystä luoda pysyviä rakenteita musiikillisen toiminnan edistämiseksi Suomessa. 4 Abstract In this doctoral dissertation, I examine the musical agency of composer, organist, conductor and music pedagogue Richard Faltin (1835−1918) in Finland in the second half of the 19th century. The four articles in the study cover Faltin’s active career between 1856 and 1896. During that time, Faltin worked among others as awakener of Vyborg art music life (Article I), conductor of the first opera house founded in Finland (Article II), presenter of the international music trends and Wagner pioneer in Finland (Article III) and music teacher of the University of Helsinki (Article IV). The aim of my study is to examine the effects of Faltin’s activities on the development of Finnish art music culture in the second half of the 19th century, as well as illuminating Faltin’s penchant for creating permanent structures to promote musical activity in Finland. A closer look focuses on Faltin’s role as a nurturer of the first generation of musicians born in Finland and a supporter of the musical professional identity, as well as the influence of Faltin’s extraordinarily large international contacts on creating the structure and the models of Finnish musical institutes, such as music schools, orchestras, choirs and opera houses. Methodologically, the dissertation combines the research tradition of musicology and cultural history. I approach Faltin’s musical agency as a time- and place-bound historical activity, whose boundary conditions included language dissonances in Finland in the 19th century and Finland’'s position as the Grand Duchy of Russia. These are the issues I primarily research through historical newspaper articles and overviews. On the other hand, I examine the source material of Faltin’s archival documents on personal history by means of biographical research, whereby a broader cultural picture is accompanied by a history that Faltin himself has remembered and interpreted. The National Library’s archival documents include Faltin’s correspondence, memoir manuscripts, concert programs, testimonies and other official documents, composition manuscripts, and musical and book material. The new or unpublished material presented in my research both corrects and completes the understanding of the content, breadth and significance of Faltin’s musical activities to the development of Finnish art music culture. The image of later music history as “Father of Finnish Church Music” by Faltin takes on new dimensions. 5 Esipuhe Tämän tutkimuksen juuret ulottuvat kevääseen 2010, jolloin valmistuin musiikki- pedagogiksi (Musiikkipedagogi AMK) Helsingin Metropolia Ammattikorkeakou- lusta.

  • Jean Sibelius Violin Concerto (1905)
JEAN SIBELIUS VIOLIN CONCERTO (1905) “The Violin Concerto is in more than one sense, a compensation for, or a sublimation of Sibelius’ unfulfilled ambition to become a virtuoso international violinist.” (Burnett James) JEAN SIBELIUS BIOGRAPHY (1865-1957): Born December 8, 1865 in Hämeelinna, Finland, to Swedish speaking parents. His father, a doctor, died in 1868, bankrupt. Mother moved in with extended family. He was introduced to music by his aunt Evelina. Began piano lessons at age 9. Began violin lessons at age 15. Aspired to become a violin virtuoso. It was not to be. His real first name was Janne (a version of Johann). During his high school years he changed it to the more French sounding Jean. Studied in the Helsinki Music Institute (1885-89), Berlin (1889-90) & Vienna (1890-91). Married Aino Järnefelt in 1892 and built a home Ainola, on Lake Tuusula, Järvenpää, where Sibelius lived from 1904 for the rest of his life. Around this time Sibelius took to heavy drinking and carousing. Like his father, his finances were precarious. 1899 Kullervo, nationalistic choral symphony, gave him his first recognition. Sibelius’ nationalistic music, based on Finnish myth, continued with Karelia Suite (1893), 4 tone poems on legendary hero Lemminkäinen (1895) & Finlandia (1899). Symphonies # 1 (1899), 2 (1902). Violin Concerto premiered 1904, amid debt & drinking in the composer’s life. Difficulties with the concerto led to more bouts of drinking. The revision of the concerto was a turbulent process. Revised version premiered 1905. 1907-09: Throat cancer scare. A series of throat surgeries; tumor removed. This caused Sibelius to quit smoking and drinking.

Chace, I former president of Emory University, published an article in The American Scholar titled “The Decline of the English Department.” He began with the following observation: During the last four decades, a well-publicized shift in what undergraduate students prefer to study has taken place in American higher education. The number of young men and women majoring in English has dropped dramatically; the same is true of philosophy, foreign languages, art history, and kindred fields, including history. Shortly thereafter, our own Red and Black cited a New York Times report that the most popular undergraduate major in American colleges and universities is now business. The Willson Center has invited Dr. Chace to join Dr. William M. SYMPHONY NO. 5 AS A SUMMARY OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS’S PHILOSOPHY OF THE ENGLISH COMPOSER by DEBORAH BOWDEN LISANO (Under the Direction of Roger Vogel) ABSTRACT Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Symphony No. 5 in D was composed between the years 1938 and 1943. The purpose of this study is to analyze Symphony No. 5 as a summary of Vaughan Williams’s philosophy of the English composer. Symphony No. 5 has been selected as the work for this study as it is, in the opinion of many, the most representative and outstanding of Vaughan Williams’s nine symphonies. Symphony No. 5 is explored in six chapters that deal with musical, social, and political influences on Vaughan Williams during and prior to the writing of Symphony No. 5; the characteristics of Vaughan Williams’s working method; Vaughan Williams’s writings as they relate to the English composer and the symphony; the manuscripts of Symphony No. 5; the dedication of Symphony No. 5 to Jean Sibelius; and an analysis of Symphony No. 5. Included in the appendices are observations regarding the premiere, the reception history, and the recorded history of Symphony No. 5, and charts outlining the major tonal/modal areas of the symphony. There are many people who have helped me over the years, and contribute to my knowledge and understanding that I have today. Dr. Virginia Whealton introduced me to Johann Gottfried von Herder, and his influences on politics and culture. Dr. Whealton’s critical thinking, knowledge and insights as my document supervisor have always helped push me to a higher level of academia. Dr. Philip Mann has provided wisdom, support and great advice throughout my doctoral programme, as my overall programme supervisor – and I am grateful for his care and consideration throughout my three years here as a student. Indeed, the opportunity to conduct Sibelius’s 5th symphony in my first year as my conducting recital contributed to my deeper understanding of Sibelius’s music. Dr. Susan Brumfield was the first person to fully make me cognisant of the great similarities between the philosophical ideas of Vaughan Williams and Kodály – and again, her expertise in the field of Kodály is unparalleled.
