Miller 1 Bethany Miller Dr. Deardorff Senior Seminar 8 April 2015 “Shining” with the Marginalized: Self-Reflection and Empathy in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece The Shining has confounded and fascinated viewers for decades. Perhaps its most mystifying element is its final zoom, which gradually falls on a picture of Jack Torrance beaming in front of a crowd with the caption “July 4 th Ball, Overlook Hotel, 1921.” While Bill Blakemore and others examine the film as a critique of violence in American history, no scholar has thoroughly established the connection between July 4 th, 1921, Jack Torrance, and the rest of the film.

Cate An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Honors in The Department of Film Studies The School of Arts and Sciences Rhode Island College 2009 Cate 1 “New” Hollywood Narratives: An Analysis of Boogie Nights and Magnolia Introduction To discuss Paul Thomas Anderson the filmmaker is to consider the current age of Hollywood filmmaking and the idea of the “new” Hollywood narrative. As writer- director of such acclaimed films as Magnolia (1999) and There Will Be Blood (2007), Anderson was praised for appearing to have “arrived at his mastery virtually overnight” with his first major release, the 1997 ensemble film Boogie Nights (Gleiberman). Anderson has long been compared to veteran filmmaker Robert Altman, whose take on the typical Hollywood narrative format has clearly influenced Anderson’s films.

Nelson, Christian Brothers University (2002 Instructional Resource Award Recipient) Overview This 106-page resource offers instructors tools for using films to enhance their instruction. Student evaluations consistently indicate that films help them learn the topics, provide an alternative to traditional lectures, and give them a different point of view. However, students also say they do not like to view films if they do not understand the relevancy of the film to the course material. This resource gives teachers of psychology additional tools for using film, such as tested study guides, sample syllabi, student papers, references, and Internet resources. The film study guides contained in this resource have been used in a variety of psychology classes, and may be applicable to a variety of other courses.
