This, we believe, is due to two principal reasons. On the one hand, the ever-increasing non-observance of the Lord's Day as a result of the radical transformation of the weekly cycle, caused by the complexity of modern life and by the scientific, technological and industrial progress, demands a serious reexamination of the significance of Sunday for the Christian today. To accomplish a sound theological reappraisal of Sunday it is necessary to investigate its Biblical basis and its historical genesis. On the other hand, the many studies on this topic, though excellent, have not given a fully satisfactory answer because of the lack of consider- ation of some of those factors which in the Church of the first centuries contributed to the concrete genesis and development of a day of worship different from the Jewish Sabbath. On account of this, the new work of Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi is to be welcomed. He takes up again the study of this suggestive theme and, by analyzing critically the various factors—theological, social, political, pa- gan-religious—which have somehow influenced the adoption of Sunday as day of Christian worship, he makes an effort to provide a complete picture of the origin and progressive configuration of Sunday until the fourth cen- tury. It is a work that recommends itself because of its rich content, the rig- orous scientific method, and the vast horizon with which it has been con- ceived and executed. This is indicative of the author’s singular ability to encompass various fields in order to capture those aspects and elements re- lated to the theme under investigation. We gladly mention the thesis that Bacchiocchi defends regarding the birth-place of Sunday worship: for him this arose most probably not in the primitive Church of Jerusalem, wellknown for its profound attachment to Jewish religious traditions, but rather in the Church of Rome. The abandonment of the Sabbath and the adoption of Sunday as the Lord’s Day, are the result of an interplay of Christian, Jewish and pagan- -5- Preface 6 religious factors. The event of Christís resurrection which occurred on that day, had naturally significant importance. Following the order of redemp- tive history, the author begins his investigation with the Messianic typology of the Sabbath in the Old Testament and proceeds to examine how this found its fulfilment in the redemptive mission of Christ. The strict scientific orientation of the work does not prevent the author from revealing his profound religious and ecumenic concern. Conscious that the history of salvation knows not fractures but continuity, he finds in the rediscovery of the religious values of the Biblical Sabbath, a help to restore to the Lord’s Day its ancient sacred character. This is in reality the exhorta- tion that already in the fourth century the bishops addressed to the believers, namely to spend Sunday not in outings or watching shows, but rather to sanctify it by assisting at the eucharistic celebration and by doing acts of mercy (St. Ambrose, Exam. III, 1, 1). In fact, Jewish and Christian worship find their concrete expression in one day, recurring weekly, wherein adoration of God is made possible and more meaningful by the interruption of secular activities. Rather than taking time to respond to each message which would be impossible at this time, especially since I am flying to London, England in a couple of days, I decided to devote this newsletter to respond to two major concerns expressed in several messages. The first is my suggestion that Obama will foster the expansion of the presence and power of Islam in America. The second is my expanded interpretation of the Antichrist to include Islam in addition to the Papacy. In my past readings I found references to social, ecological, economic, and energy considerations as possible reasons for introducing Sunday Laws. I came as surprise for me to learn this past week that the impetus for Sunday laws may come from the current financial crisis that affects many nations today. The European Episcopal Commission, known as COMECE, consisting of 24 bishops, each representing a western country, met in Brussels, the headquarter of the European Parliament from November 12-14, 2008.

For one thing my mother-in-law would not let me forget Allen Walker. She spoke often of that bold, self- educated, southern evangelist who had introduced her to Christ and His message in a tent revival soon after she was married. Later as an aspiring young evangelist in Florida, I heard other ministers speak almost reverently about the spiritual exploits of Allen Walker. His fantastic knowledge of the Scriptures, a fearless nature, and unassailable logic made him almost a legend through the southland where he conducted protracted evangelistic “efforts.” By my second public crusade in 1950 he was retired, yet he still had a daily radio program operating in Dothan, Alabama, just a few miles from Tallahassee, Florida, where I was pastoring. I made it a point to visit with him at every possible opportunity, plying him with questions about soul-winning.

    Historicist interpretations of the Book of Revelation From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia May 2020 Historicism, a method of interpretation in Christian eschatology which associates biblical prophecies with actual historical events and identifies symbolic beings with historical persons or societies, has been applied to the Book of Revelation by many writers. The Historicist view follows a straight line of continuous fulfillment of prophecy which starts in Daniel's time and goes through John's writing of the Book of Revelation all the way to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.[1] One of the most influential aspects of the early Protestant historicist paradigm was the assertion that scriptural identifiers of the Antichrist were matched only by the institution of the Papacy. Particular significance and concern were the Papal claims of authority over both the Church, through Apostolic succession, and the State, through the Divine right of Kings. When the Papacy aspires to exercise authority beyond its religious realm into civil affairs, on account of the Papal claim to be the Vicar of Christ, then the institution was fulfilling the more perilous biblical indicators of the Antichrist. Martin Luther wrote this view, which was not novel, into the Smalcald Articles of 1537. It was then widely popularized in the 16th century, via sermons, drama, books, and broadside publication.[2] The alternate methods of prophetic interpretation, Futurism and Preterism were derived from Jesuit writings, whose counter reformation efforts were aimed at opposing this interpretation[3][4][5][6] that the Antichrist was the Papacy or the power of the Roman Catholic Church.[7] Origins in Judaism and Early Church[edit] The interpreters using the historicist approach for Revelation had their origins in the Jewish apocalyptic writings such as we see in the book of Daniel, which predicted the future the time between their writing and the end of the world.

    HELL – TORMENT OR ANNIHILATION? Samuele Bacchiocchi, Ph. D. Few teachings have troubled the human conscience over the centuries more than the traditional view of hell as the place where the lost suffer conscious punishment in body and soul for all eternity. The prospect that one day a vast number of people will be consigned to the everlasting torment of hell is most disturbing and distressing to sensitive Christians. After all, almost everyone has friends or family members who have died without making a commitment to Christ. The prospect of one day seeing them agonizing in hell for all eternity can easily lead thinking Christians to say to God: "No thank you God. I am not interested in Your kind of paradise!" It is not surprising that the traditional view of hell as a place of eternal torment has been a stumbling block for believers and an effective weapon used by skeptics to challenge the credibility of the Christian message. For example, Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), a British philosopher and social reformer, faulted Christ for allegedly teaching the doctrine of hellfire and for the untold cruelty such a doctrine has caused in Christian history. Russell wrote: "There is one serious defect to my mind in Christ’s moral character, and that is that He believed in hell. I do not myself feel that any person who is really profoundly humane can believe in everlasting punishment. Christ certainly as depicted in the Gospels did believe in everlasting punishment, and one does find repeatedly a vindictive fury against those people who would not listen to His preaching, an attitude which is common with preachers, but which does somewhat detract from superlative excellence.

Berrien Springs, MI: Adventist Theological Society Publications, 1991. 176 pp. $11.95. Professor Hasel's volume is the result of serious reflection and research on the topic of glossolalia and the biblical understanding of "speaking in tongues." His main concern is to show that the New Testament of "speaking in tongues" is unrelated to the modern manifestation of glossolalia. According to Hasel, recent research has shown that modern glossolalia represents a learned but unintelligible form of speaking identical with that used by witch doctors, shamans, and priests of non-Christian religions. If this is indeed the case, the author's question as to how God could employ such means of communication popular in seances and sorcerous meetings by spiritualists is legitimate. To prove his point that the crucial chapter 1 Cor 14 cannot be considered equivalent to the modem occurrence of glossolalia, Hasel examines all key references in the New Testament (Mark 16:17: Acts 2, 10, and 19; as well as 1 Cor 14).
