    WINNETKA HOCKEY PLAYER SKILL DEVELOPMENT GUIDE The Winnetka Hockey Club’s goal for each current or potential travel level player is for that player to have fun playing the game of hockey and to develop/improve his or her skills during the hockey season. To accomplish this task of skill development, each coach is being given a set of “Core Skills” that need to be taught so that each player can properly progress to the next age level. These Core Skill requirements should be accompanied by a set of drills designed to instill these skills. They should be incorporated into the practice plan at every practice. Variations of these drills should be carried over to older age groups to insure mastery. To be clear, other general skills must be taught at each level, but the below described Core Skills will define the Winnetka Player. Coaches must teach the players on their team the Core Skills to ensure that each player can develop properly and progress to the next level of hockey. In addition to the Core Skills, we have also included a list of “General Skills” players at any given level coaches should be teaching and refining. It the responsibility of each coach to assess the players on his or her team and ensure that they are teaching the kids the skills each player needs to develop at game of hockey. Lastly, coaches should take an active role in instructing every player proper form and technique. Kids cannot learn if coaches are not continually teaching kids how to properly execute drills and techniques.

My duties entailed everything from overseeing the team budget, scheduling ice time, recruiting players, coaching practices, scheduling busses for road trips and representing the team at University meetings. I was named top club officer by the University and helped my team finish in the top 10 at the National Tournament both years as Team President.

Attacking zone: Sometimes also called the offensive zone, the attacking zone is the one third of the rink that contains the defender’s goal. Breakaway: When one attacking player manages to get by all defenders and is skating in on the goalie by him or herself. Center line: The center line bisects the middle of the rink. Check: A move used to gain the puck from the opponent in which a defensive player uses his or her stick or body to push the offensive player with the puck. It is an illegal move in physical education floor hockey. Defensive player: Players who are primarily used for defense. Defensive zone: The zone in which a team’s goalie is located. End zone: The portion of the rink behind the goal line. Face-off: The mechanism used by the official to restart play.

The cultural disconnect was that drastic. France, because of its colonies, half the team is black. There was a serious disconnect between the players and the staff. When I was a rookie, we had 3 meetings: one to manage your money, one for security matters, one to handle lovers. All this was meant to protect the NBA brand, the corporate brand. We’re athletes, but we’re more than athletes. I would love to see these corporations consider athletes as individuals, just as they consider themselves.

    Coaches Win Practice, Players Win Games Embracing the Princeton Offense in the NBA’s Small Ball Era David Kenah It’s no secret to anyone that watched the NBA playoffs this year – the league continues to embrace a new style of play. Almost every team in the playoffs went small at some point in their respective playoff series. While small ball used to be commonly known as having a traditional center playing alongside a stretch 4-man, or pick & pop player, it has continued to evolve into the idea of simply playing four traditional smalls around one traditional center. The thought process behind this style of play is mainly to space the floor and play spread pick & roll basketball. Spread pick & roll is a simple offense that is virtually un-guardable verse some of the best players in the game; Elite guards (see: Stephen Curry) combined in a pick & roll with skilled bigs (see: Draymond Green) and 3 other offensive players spaced behind the 3-point line ready to shoot or attack a closeout. It’s come to dominate the game of basketball at the pro level. While this strategy can result in great success for the most talented teams, it can be tougher to execute effectively with lesser talented teams. NBA defenses are so well trained in pick & roll defense and isolation defense that it’s become much too easy to defend most teams, leading to stagnant possessions and contested jump shots far too often. In this small ball evolution, many teams have overlooked traditional basketball actions within their offense: chin cuts, backdoor cuts, split actions, flare screens, etc.
