More than 30 papers and posters were presented and much fruitful discussion occurred. An enjoyable field trip to the Colorado Rockies took place on Sunday, May 19th, and the weather was excellent. Boris was such a good host that it was difficult to leave, but many participants traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend the annual meetings of the North American Benthological Society. Bill Stark gave us a way to remember this meeting by producing a T-shirt with a unique “Spirit Fly” design. ANNOUNCEMENT 11th International Stonefly Symposium Stan Szczytko has planned and organized an excellent symposium that will be held at the Tree Haven Biological Station, University of Wisconsin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, USA. The registration cost of $300 includes lodging, meals, field trip and a T- Shirt. This is a real bargain so hopefully many colleagues and friends will come and participate in the symposium August 17-20, 1992. Soc., 19(3): 95-107, 2017 ISSN:1302-0250 Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region Caner AYDINLI Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, 26470, Eskişehir/Turkey, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was carried out in order to contribute to the Ephemeroptera (Insecta) fauna of the Eastern Black Sea region and Turkey. As a result, 2.129 larvae specimens from provinces of the Eastern Black Sea region were collected in 2009, and 26 species belonging to 14 genera from 8 families were determined. Eight of these species are new records for the region, namely Baetis vernus, B. (Nigrobaetis) niger, Procloeon bifidum, P. pennulatum, Rhithrogena savoiensis, Ecdyonurus venosus, Choroterpes picteti, Ephemera vulgata. Moreover, Rhithrogena savoiensis Alba-Tercedor and Sowa, 1987 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. Thus, the number of mayfly species in Turkey increased to 158. INTRODUCTION Ephemeroptera is one of the most evolutionary primitive orders of the extant insect groups as well as an ancient lineage of insects. The dominant stage in the life cycle of mayflies is the larval one, as they and the larvae inhabit all types of freshwaters. Mayflies are distributed all over the world excluding Antarctica and some remote oceanic islands. Even though Ephemeroptera is represented by more than 3.000 described species, their taxonomical and faunistical studies are still in progress (Barber-James et al., 2008). The shoreline of the Eastern Black Sea Region is a refuge for the Caucasian fauna consisting of Siberian and cold steppe elements migrating towards the temperate areas during the glacial periods in Anatolia (Bahadır and Emet, 2013). -

Red Lists assess the extinction risk of species and are an impor- tant tool to prioritise species conservation and management measures. World- wide, quantitative IUCN criteria are used to estimate the threat status of species at the regional level. 2. In Flanders (north Belgium), about 70 000 distribution records of lady- birds were collected in 36% of all the grid cells (1 9 1km2) since 1990 during a large-scale citizen-science project. 3. Applying the IUCN criteria to the 36 resident ‘conspicuous’ ladybirds in Flanders resulted in two Regionally Extinct species, three Endangered species and six Vulnerable species. A further seven species were considered Near Threatened and the remaining 15 species (39%) were assessed as Least Concern. Three species were classified as Data deficient. Using the Red List status, we delineated ladybird hotspots that were mainly located in grid cells with large areas of Natura2000 sites. 4. Fyziologie a imunita většiny zahrnutých druhů ne byla dosud zkoumána, a proto bylo cílem práce jejich porovnání s cha rakteristikami probádanějších druhů, jako je Coccinella septempunctata nebo na evropském kontinentu invazní druh Harmonia axyrídis. Bylo zjištěno, že antimikrobiální aktivita je vysoká u druhů ze tří sesterských rodů Harmonia, Hippodamia a Ceratomegilla. Druhy z těchto rodů měly také menší koncentraci proteinů vhemolymfě, proto zřejmě jako pri mární ochranu proti patogenům využívají především látky nebílkovinné povahy. -

ZooKeys 637: 135–149. https://doi.org/10.3897/ zookeys.637.10359 Abstract Peat bogs are unique wetland ecosystems of high conservation value all over the world, yet data on the macroinvertebrates (including mayfly assemblages) in these habitats are still scarce. Over the course of one growing season, mayfly assemblages were sampled each month, along with other macroinvertebrates, in the largest and oldest Croatian peat bog and an adjacent stream. In total, ten mayfly species were recorded: two species in low abundance in the peat bog, and nine species in significantly higher abundance in the stream. Low species richness and abundance in the peat bog were most likely related to the harsh environ- mental conditions and mayfly habitat preferences.In comparison, due to the more favourable habitat con- ditions, higher species richness and abundance were observed in the nearby stream. -

Special emphasis was placed on multi-class extensions of Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Benthic macroinvertebrates are used in biomonitoring due to their properties to react to changes in water quality. The use of benthic macroinvertebrates in biomonitoring requires a large number of collected samples. Traditionally benthic macroinvertebrates are separated and identified manually one by one from samples collected by biologists. This, however, is a time-consuming and expensive approach. By the automation of the identification process time and money would be saved and more extensive biomonitoring would be possible. The aim of the thesis was to examine what classification method would be the most appro- priate for automated benthic macroinvertebrate classification. -

SGMA seeks to achieve sustainability, which is defined as the absence of several undesirable results, including “depletions of interconnected surface water that have significant and unreasonable adverse impacts on beneficial users of surface water” (Water Code §10721). The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a science-based, nonprofit organization with a mission to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Like humans, plants and animals often rely on groundwater for survival, which is why TNC helped develop, and is now helping to implement, SGMA. Earlier this year, we launched the Groundwater Resource Hub, which is an online resource intended to help make it easier and cheaper to address environmental requirements under SGMA. As a first step in addressing when depletions might have an adverse impact, The Nature Conservancy recommends identifying the beneficial users of surface water, which include environmental users. This is a critical step, as it is impossible to define “significant and unreasonable adverse impacts” without knowing what is being impacted. To make this easy, we are providing this letter and the accompanying documents as the best available science on the freshwater species within the boundary of your groundwater sustainability agency (GSA). -
