The Football Association Challenge the Cup Final The Football Association Challenge The Cup Final Cup Final Facts • The match is widely known as just the Cup Final. • It is the last match in the Football Association (FA) Challenge Cup. • It has about 86 000 spectators and millions of TV viewers. • The trophy (winner’s cup) is only on loan to the winning side. • 1871 - 72 season. Who Can Enter? The Challenge Cup competition is open to any club in the top ten levels of the English Football League. Once clubs have registered to play, the tournament finals. The higher ranked teams join the competition in later rounds when some of the lower ranked teams have been knocked out. What Do the Winners Receive? The winners of the final match receive the Football Association Cup, the FA Cup. It comes in three parts; the base, the cup and a lid. Over the years, there have been two designs of trophy and five cups have been made.     Season 2015-2016 Season Review - Results – Tables - Statistics Compiled by Dominic McKenzie with editorial by Dave Watters The 2015-16 EVO-STIK Northern Premier League campaign saw Darlington 1883 romp to the EVO-STIK Northern Premier League's Premier Division title in style with a 6-1 victory at Whitby Town, the Quakers winning their third promotion in four years with a game to spare after beating North East rivals Blyth Spartans to the line in what ended as a two way race. The runners-up also lost out in the play-offs to Salford City, the Ammies going up for the second successive season since their takeover by Manchester United’s Class of 92 but this time doing it the hard way after their third place finish. Stafford Rangers and Warrington Town won the EVO-STIK NPL’s two other title races, the latter collecting 106 points to earn the right to play at the highest level in the club’s history. First Division North runners-up Spennymoor Town were promoted alongside them via the play-offs. After leading the First Division South table by double digit margins, Stafford Rangers only took the title from Shaw Lane Aquaforce by a single point on the final day of the campaign. In the top flight, Stamford, Ramsbottom United, Hyde United and Colwyn Bay went down, the last two both suffering second successive relegations. Daventry Town needn’t have bothered asking for voluntary relegation after finishing second bottom to Tividale in First Division South. New Mills and Harrogate Railway Athletic finished the campaign occupying the two relegation spots in First Division North, the Millers earning unwanted national headlines for their never-say-die attitude while failing to win a single league outing all season.

    RULES OF THE FA CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION (“the Competition”) 1. CONTROL OF COMPETITION – RULES AND REGULATIONS (a) The ownership, organisation, control and management of the Competition and any rights associated with it of any nature shall be vested entirely and exclusively in The Association. (b) The Professional Game Board shall have the power to make, delete and amend regulations for the organisation, control and management of the Competition as it, from time to time, deems expedient (the “Competition Rules”) subject only to the authority of The Association Board where such matters relate to financial or commercial matters. Unless explicitly provided for within the Competition Rules definitions of terms used within the Competition Rules are those included within the Rules of The Association for the relevant season. (c) All Clubs and Players participating in any way in the Competition shall be bound by and comply with the Competition Rules (and any rules or regulations issued pursuant to the Competition Rules). (d) The Professional Game Board shall have the power to make decisions on all matters arising out of or in relation to the organisation, control and management of the Competition (including as to eligibility and qualification) which shall be final and binding on all Participants in the Competition. United and Arsenal have both won it a record 12 times. It’s a competition that has developed into a national treasure and holds a place in the hearts of English football fans. So, what exactly is the role of the FA in the demise of its very own showcase event? Since the inception of the Premier League, the FA has exerted less control over English football. While it does still have veto power over the appointments at the top of the Premier League hierarchy, the top 20 English clubs have autonomy from the FA to negotiate their own, very lucrative broadcasting deals. As such, the FA is seen to be playing a more custodial role at the top of English football’s professional tier. They act as mere guardians of the sport, while the Premier League dream up and enforce new ideas and changes on the league front. As such, the FA clings on to one of its few monuments of power: the FA Cup. Financially, the competition simply cannot compete. 2016 Premier League winners Leicester City raked in more than £24million for their once in a lifetime achievement. In contrast, Manchester United pocketed just £1.8million for beating Crystal Palace in last year’s FA Cup final. Aston Villa earned £1.2million for finishing dead last in the Premier League. In monetary terms, the FA Cup simply isn’t worth a lot of club’s efforts, at least not those earning millions just for competing in the Premier League (and that’s before we consider their share of broadcasting rights).

There is an urgent need to improve the regulation of professional and semi-professional football clubs. We believe the proposals summarised in this paper, would improve the long- term health and success of football in England. Our proposals are intended to be applied to Clubs in the Premier League, the English Football League and the National League System, steps 1-4 (i.e. the clubs to whom the FA’s licensing system applies.) 2. In recent years, whilst we have seen a pleasing reduction in the number of clubs facing insolvency, we have also seen an alarming rise in the number of clubs facing issues which go to the heart of the identity and well-being of the clubs, causing significant conflict with their supporters.     RULES OF THE FA CHALLENGE CUP COMPETITION (“the Competition”) 1. CONTROL OF COMPETITION – RULES AND REGULATIONS (a) The ownership, organisation, control and management of the Competition and any rights associated with it of any nature shall be vested entirely and exclusively in The Association. (b) The Professional Game Board shall have the power to administer The Association Board’s policy on or deciding on: (i) All administrative and operational issues in relation to the Competition; (ii) The level and conditions for distributions to Clubs; (iii) Draws and representative roles at Competition matches; and (iv) Insofar as it is not a matter for the FRA or the Judicial Panel, the convening of disciplinary commissions to consider breaches of the rules and regulations of the Competition, including making decisions arising out of the competition and the rules and regulations, accepting entries and making exemptions in relation to the Competition. The Association Board shall retain and reserve the responsibility for determining all commercial issues (including the sale and exploitation of sponsorship, broadcasting and licensing rights), any decisions relating to the structure, format and regulation of the Competition and the drafting of rules and regulations of the Competition. Unless explicitly provided for within the Competition Rules definitions of terms used within the Competition Rules are those included within the Rules of The Association for the relevant season. (c) All Clubs and Players participating in any way in the Competition shall be bound by and comply with the Competition Rules (and any rules or regulations issued pursuant to the Competition Rules). (d) The Professional Game Board shall have the power to make decisions on all matters arising out of or in relation to the organisation, control and management of the Competition (including as to eligibility and qualification) which shall be final and binding on all Participants in the Competition.
