Pan-Pacific Defense Corps PPDC HIMUNC IV BACKGROUND GUIDE 欢迎. BIENVENUE. ДОБРО .ﺑﻚ أﻫﺎل .WELCOME. BIENVENIDOS ПОЖАЛОВАТЬ Pan-Pacific Defense Corps PPDC Dear Delegates, Welcome to the 4th annual Henrico Model United Nations Conference (HIMUNC IV). We would like to personally thank you for attending this conference this year. We understand that this year is unlike any before, and we are in very uncertain times right now, but we can assure you that with your cooperation and patience, this conference should be memorable. We as chairs strive to put our all into this committee and be as supportive and understanding as possible. Pacific Rim is a sci-fi action movie that takes place in 2020-2025. With the number of crises this year alone, from a global pandemic to murder hornets to the potential start of World War 3, these days nothing seems to surprise us as we become more and more desensitized to catastrophies. The only logical next step from here is giant monsters invading our planet from a crack in the ocean floor which is why a committee about that and taking place in the same year is so entertaining. The two topics in this committee will be: Protecting the planet from Kaiju attacks and the environmental implications of Kaiju remains. We hope you are just as interested in these topics as we are and look forward to your creative problem-solving abilities as we face near certain extinction. This committee will give all of you the ability to determine your own futures and the solutions to these problems freely. Our future rests in your hands and we know that all of you will do what is in the best interest of the people and will find a way to save as many lives as possible. If there are any questions about the background guide or the topics, feel free to contact us and we will reply as fast and as effectively as possible. We look forward to your attendance and hope that this committee exceeds your expectations and provides a fun environment to gain worthwhile experience for future conferences. We are so excited to meet you and hope that we can find a way to defend the planet from aliens. Good luck delegates! TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

  • Bamcinématek Presents Ghosts and Monsters: Postwar Japanese Horror, Oct 26—Nov 1 Highlighting 10 Tales of Rampaging Beasts and Supernatural Terror
BAMcinématek presents Ghosts and Monsters: Postwar Japanese Horror, Oct 26—Nov 1 Highlighting 10 tales of rampaging beasts and supernatural terror September 21, 2018/Brooklyn, NY—From Friday, October 26 through Thursday, November 1 BAMcinématek presents Ghosts and Monsters: Postwar Japanese Horror, a series of 10 films showcasing two strands of Japanese horror films that developed after World War II: kaiju monster movies and beautifully stylized ghost stories from Japanese folklore. The series includes three classic kaiju films by director Ishirô Honda, beginning with the granddaddy of all nuclear warfare anxiety films, the original Godzilla (1954—Oct 26). The kaiju creature features continue with Mothra (1961—Oct 27), a psychedelic tale of a gigantic prehistoric and long dormant moth larvae that is inadvertently awakened by island explorers seeking to exploit the irradiated island’s resources and native population. Destroy All Monsters (1968—Nov 1) is the all-star edition of kaiju films, bringing together Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, as the giants stomp across the globe ending with an epic battle at Mt. Fuji. Also featured in Ghosts and Monsters is Hajime Satô’s Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell (1968—Oct 27), an apocalyptic blend of sci-fi grotesquerie and Vietnam-era social commentary in which one disaster after another befalls the film’s characters. First, they survive a plane crash only to then be attacked by blob-like alien creatures that leave the survivors thirsty for blood. In Nobuo Nakagawa’s Jigoku (1960—Oct 28) a man is sent to the bowels of hell after fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run that kills a yakuza.

  • Green Horror: the Use of Environmental Themes in Modern American Horror Cinema
Green Horror: The Use of Environmental Themes in Modern American Horror Cinema by Dana (Devorah) Gordin August 2019 Master’s Thesis School for Environment and Sustainability, University of Michigan Thesis Committee: Associate Professor Rebecca Hardin, Chair Associate Professor Julia Wondolleck Abstract This study began with the question of what environmental themes may be present in contemporary American horror media and what any trends in these narratives or works may suggest about American understanding of, beliefs towards and fears about the potential environmental future. With guidance from current and former staff at the Askwith Media Library at the University of Michigan, I conducted a review of films that elicit much of their audience engagement through horror while having clear environmental themes or narratives, then selected twelve cinema-released films for critical analysis. Each shared a central premise in which nature shows a widespread response to collective human abuse of the natural world. My criteria excluded numerous examples of works with similar themes, but which did not have as direct a message. I also privileged films that were critically acclaimed and more widely discussed. Finally, I honed for comparative analysis of tropes and themes on storylines with an overall sense that the environment itself is not as much of a threat as other humans when it comes to survival. My results and discussion raise concerns with some of the messaging in recent environmentally progressive discourse that uses a similar framing of threat to bolster environmental support. While there has been an understanding that specific discussions of human threat in relationship to the environment compels people emotionally, it is not the result of greater environmental care or understanding, but often heavily influenced by other fears, including anxiety about increasing human mobility, demographic pressures, and cultural differences.

CULTURE The Master of Special Effects – The Legacy of Tsuburaya Eiji ― In conversation with Ooka Shinichi, President of Tsuburaya Productions Explosions crash and bang as Godzilla or another monster destroys the city… Ultraman shoots Spacium Rays to take down another monster… The best thing about watching special effects movies is that they always shock and surprise you. Tsuburaya Eiji was known as the master of special effects, but in what ways is his DNA being kept alive today? We take a look back and share in the recollections of Ooka Shinichi, former cameraman and current President of Tsuburaya Productions. Shiraishi Masahiko, movie researcher, screenwriter and director There is one man in particular who was known as the master of special effects. In 1936, he developed the screen process (rear projection, a system involving positioning a screen behind the actors then projecting scenery onto the screen from behind) for the first time in the movie industry on the set of a German co-production called Atarashiki Tsuchi (The Daughter of the Samurai ). He later recreated the aerial attack on Pearl Harbor on a miniature set for the movie Hawaii Mare Oki Kaisen (The War at Sea from Hawaii to Malaya ) in 1942, before bringing to life a 50-meter tall monster and laying waste to Tokyo in the 1954 movie Godzilla . That man was Shiraishi Masahiko, movie Tsuburaya Eiji. researcher, screenwriter and director After Godzilla , movies on which Tsuburaya handled special effects technology became a gold mine for Toho and ended up supporting the entire company. Although Tsuburaya’s special effects movies covered a wide range of areas, including science fiction, war and fantasy, the genre in which they proved most popular was kaiju (monster) movies.
