Neville Brothers -- the first Family of New Orleans Music -- Has Vowed Not to Return to New Orleans
Dec. 15, 2005-- Cyril Neville boarded Amtrak's City of New Orleans train with a full head of steam. He joined singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie earlier this month for the first leg of a 12-day journey from Chicago to New Orleans, playing concerts along the way to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Neville, however, won't be on the train when it rolls into his old hometown. He won't be going home at all. Neville, 56, percussionist-vocalist and youngest member of the Neville Brothers -- the first family of New Orleans music -- has vowed not to return to New Orleans. During a heartfelt conversation before embarking on the train journey, Neville explained he and his wife, Gaynielle, have bought a home in Austin, Texas. Cyril Neville joins his nephew Ivan Neville, as well as the Radiators and the Iguanas as popular New Orleans acts who have settled in Austin. Some even perform in an ad hoc band known as the Texiles. They sing a different song about the promised recovery of New Orleans. "Would I go back to live?" Neville asked. "There's nothing there. And the situation for musicians was a joke. People thought there was a New Orleans music scene -- there wasn't. You worked two times a year: Mardi Gras and Jazz Fest. The only musicians I knew who made a living playing music in New Orleans were Kermit Ruffins and Pete Fountain. Everyone else had to have a day job or go on tour. I have worked more in two months in Austin than I worked in two years in New Orleans. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories. -

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue Bring the Funk on Austin City Limits Joined by Special Guest Cyril Neville New Episode Premieres January 5 on PBS Austin, TX—January 3, 2019—Austin City Limits (ACL) showcases Trombone Shorty & his 10-piece band Orleans Avenue in an electrifying hour with the New Orleans funk shooting stars. The new episode premieres Saturday, January 5 at 8pm CT/9pm ET, as ACL’s Season 44 resumes with six new installments. The program airs weekly on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and full episodes are made available online for a limited time at pbs.org/austincitylimits immediately following the initial broadcast. We meet again!” proclaims Trombone Shorty, aka Troy Andrews, in his second appearance on the ACL stage. The bandleader and his band of aces, including horns, guitar and percussion, show off their bona fides on the instrumental opener “Buckjump,” before easing into the brass-band funk of the Allen Toussaint classic “On Your Way Down.” The non-stop party features selections from Shorty’s catalog, including funky rocker “Where It At?” and the show-stopping “Here Come the Girls” from 2017’s acclaimed Parking Lot Symphony, along with numbers from 2011’s For True and 2010’s Backatown. -

Down Home Groovin’ With Big Al and the Heavyweights Times are very challenging right now. There can be no doubt about that. This pandemic is robbing us of our loved ones, the economy is tanked worldwide, once bustling cities now look like ghost-towns, businesses are closing down while many will likely never reopen, jobs are on hold, millions have no income and are in need of food, and to top it all off, we are hunkered down in our homes, wondering when this nightmare will end. Left with only our thoughts, it is all too easy to slip into a deep funk and lose all hope. It is worth remembering, that out of significant pain, some of the best musical genres in the world arose, weaving tales of hardship set to music, that penetrates the depth of our collective souls. The blues originated in the Deep South in the post Civil War era, conveying stories of the pain of slavery and the toll it took on African descendants, while combining African musical traditions, African-American work songs, spirituals, chants, and ballads, as a means of powerful story-telling. Zydeco music is a genre endemic to southwest Louisiana, from primarily French Creole speakers, blending the blues, rhythm and blues, and the indigenous music of Louisiana Creoles and Cajuns. Roots music is a very broad category of music that includes music from the varied origins of American life. It includes bluegrass, old time music, folk music (particularly from Appalachia), Cajun, and Native American music, while serving as a basis for rock and roll, rhythm and blues, and jazz. -

However, after you hear and see the group share their talents, it’s believable that someone has a remarkable ability to pull together a team of people to do their incredible reggae presentations. But to have the best experience with Adwela and the Uprising, you should see and here them live at one of their engagements. This story wouldn’t be happening if I would not have heard and saw them during their open for the legendary Wailers at the Irie Wine Beer, Reggae and Jazz Festival at Shiley Acres in Inwood, West Virginia this fall. Friends of WWOZ Board of Directors/NOJHFF WWOZ General Manager’s Report September 13, 2017 Highlights: It’s my pleasure to introduce our new Director of Development, Marcel McGee. Marcel has over 19 years of successful experience in donor relations and fundraising, working in settings as varied as Loyola University New Orleans, Dillard University, the Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations, American Red Cross-Southeast Louisiana Chapter, The Audubon Nature Institute and CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation in Maryland. Marcel is a native New Orleanian who grew up in the Ninth Ward. He served in the United States Navy and is a graduate of Southern University at New Orleans. He is a member of both the Association of Fundraising Professionals and The Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Research and planning for our Tricentennial Music Moments project is underway. There is a lot of excitement around this effort and more notable New Orleanians and ‘OZ supporters are signing on every day to voice the spots. We continue to seek funding for the project. Thanks to the Ruth U. Fertel Foundation for a generous grant in the amount of $15,000. This grant will allow us to bring A CLOSER WALK into the schools of the Greater New Orleans area and refine and expand the project. We also received notice from Lt. Governor Nungesser’s office that we will be receiving a $12,000 grant from the Louisiana State Arts Council and the Louisiana Division of the Arts. Additionally, we learned that we have been recommended to receive $14,000 from the Arts Council of New Orleans. -

2020 First Extraordinary Session ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 2 BY SENATOR CARTER AND REPRESENTATIVE LYONS A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of Arthur "Art" Lanon Neville. WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the Legislature of Louisiana learned of the passing of Art Neville, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the age of eighty-one on July 22, 2019, after years of declining health; and WHEREAS, Arthur Lanon Neville was born on December 17, 1937, the son of Amelia (Landry) and Arthur Neville Sr.; and WHEREAS, he grew up in New Orleans and was a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist; and WHEREAS, Art Neville started on piano and performed with his brothers at an early age and was influenced by the R&B styles of James Booker, Bill Doggett, Booker T. Jones, Lloyd Glenn, and Professor Longhair; and WHEREAS, when in high school, he joined The Hawketts and, in 1954, recorded "Mardi Gras Mambo" that gained popularity and became a New Orleans carnival anthem; and WHEREAS, Art Neville joined the United States Navy in 1958 and returned to music in 1962; and WHEREAS, in the early 1960s, he formed the Neville Sounds which included Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville, George Porter, Leo Nocentelli, and Ziggy Modeliste playing at the Nitecap and the Ivanhoe nightclubs; and WHEREAS, Art Neville backed many notable artists such as Lee Dorsey, Betty Harris, and the Pointer Sisters; his band had a strong sense of "groove" and, unlike traditional groups, each instrument was free to lead and go anywhere musically … this style, over time, became known as "New Orleans Funk"; and WHEREAS, he was a staple of the New Orleans music scene for more than five Page 1 of 3 SCR NO.
