Clergy Sign On Dear President Biden and EPA Administrator Regan, As faith leaders from many diverse religious and spiritual traditions, we believe that humanity shares a responsibility to be stewards of Creation. All of us must work together to reduce pollution and implement just and equitable solutions to the climate crisis, and our national leaders have a sacred role in helping to achieve these goals. Therefore, we are united in our call for continuing to reduce vehicle emissions. As the United States builds a clean energy economy, we must focus on the sector that now generates the largest percentage of climate pollution: transportation. The clean car standards are the most effective policy currently available to contribute to climate solutions. In 2012, auto companies, federal agencies, and the state of California agreed to a long overdue new set of clean car standards to boost vehicles’ fuel efficiency and reduce carbon pollution from tailpipes. Implementing these standards was a critical step in our moral obligation to address the climate crisis. However, this significant step forward was rolled back under the previous administration. Now, we are calling on the Biden Administration to move forward with stronger national clean car standards. The climate crisis is a challenge of racial, economic, and generational justice, and we call on the Biden administration to meet it with an eye towards the most vulnerable in our communities. Choosing to make less efficient vehicles isn’t just wasteful—it is a moral travesty. Children, our elders, low wealth and Black and Brown communities are all suffering disproportionately due to increased pollution and climate-fueled disasters. As religious leaders, we urge you to enact the strongest possible standards to reduce vehicle pollution. We ask that you: ● Restore national standards and revise them beyond levels set during the Obama-Biden administration; ● Establish a 2030 standard for cars and light-duty trucks that achieves fleet average greenhouse gas emissions 60 percent or more below today’s average; ● Put the nation on a trajectory to make all new cars and light-duty trucks zero-emission vehicles no later than 2035; ● Ensure all new trucks and buses are zero-emission no later than 2040. We urge you to consider this moral opportunity and enact bold new standards that truly envision the best for our communities, our nation, and our world. Signed: Rev. INFORMATION TO USERS This reproduction was made from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this document, the quality of the reproduction is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help clarify markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark, it is an indication of either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, duplicate copy, or copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed. For blurred pages, a good image of the page can be found in the adjacent frame. If copyrighted materials were deleted, a target note will appear listing the pages in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again-beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.

  • 2018 Iowa Religious Leaders Statement on Climate Change
We can no longer wait… 2018 Iowa Religious Leaders Statement on Climate Change Global climate change is one of the most pressing moral challenges facing our world. Today, we call on Iowans to find and implement solutions to climate change. As religious leaders representing diverse faith traditions in Iowa, we offer the following shared, core beliefs that compel, empower, and guide faithful action. As people of faith: • We must act to solve climate change because it threatens our brothers and sisters in our neighborhoods, throughout our state, across our country, and around the world. We are all neighbors put at risk by a changing climate. • We can find solutions to climate change by embracing a spirit of hope. Earth sustains our lives. Creation provides a world of abundance. This abundance offers us the path out of our dependence on fossil fuels and the environmental destruction associated with greenhouse gas pollution. • We know climate justice requires we bear each other’s burdens equitably. It is not fair that climate change is affecting most those who are vulnerable and least able to adapt: the poor, the young, the elderly, the sick, and those living in developing countries. Solutions to climate change will unleash new economic opportunities the benefits of which must be shared equitably. • We are required to work with nature to find solutions to climate change. We are part of nature, not independent from it. Our call to be stewards of the Earth, to care for creation that nourishes us all, demands we work with nature rather than against it and share our first fruits with those who need them most.

  • Letter to Congress
June 15th, 2021 The Honorable Nancy Pelosi The Honorable Charles Schumer Speaker of the House Majority Leader U.S. House of Representatives U.S. Senate H-232, U.S. Capitol S-221, U.S. Capitol Washington, D.C. 20515 Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Members of Congress, As leaders from many diverse faith traditions, we are united in our call for a bold economic recovery and infrastructure package that creates family and community sustaining jobs while caring for our climate and our neighbors. It is the moral responsibility of our nation, and our sacred task as people of faith, to protect our ecosystems, work for environmental justice and public health, and address the climate crisis. We urge you to support historic levels of investment that will safeguard Creation, address the impacts of climate change and pollution from fossil fuel extraction and related industries, and fulfill our moral obligation to leave a habitable world for future generations. Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) and low-income communities have been hit the hardest by the triple health, economic, and environmental crises we face. The needs of these communities must be at the center of any infrastructure package. As we move from COVID relief to economic recovery, this moment offers a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in the clean energy future while addressing the injustices of the past. We can achieve that by: Expanding clean, renewable energy and modernizing our electric grid We can accelerate the transition to clean energy by passing a national Clean Energy Standard that achieves 100% renewable, pollution free electricity by 2035, while also expanding investments in wind and solar power.
