ON MEMORIAL DAY, LET US REMEMBER…

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

PRAYER POEM FOR ALL MOTHERS ON MOTHER’S DAY

God took the fragrance of a flower, The majesty of a tree, The gentleness of morning dew, The calm of a quiet sea

The beauty of the twilight hour, The soul of a starry night, The laughter of a rippling brook, The grace of a bird in flight

Then God fashioned from these things A creation like no other, And when his masterpiece was through He called it simply - Mother. ~Herbert Farnham Bless all mothers this Mother's Day with Your love, O God. Amen.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS By Jacinta Hamilton, 10th Grade, and Raphael Hamilton, 8th Grade, Homeschool

May 13th is the 100th Anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima and the Canonization of Jacinta and Francisco Marto. On May 13, 1917, three young children, Lucia Santos, and her cousins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, experienced a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Cova where they would go to tend their sheep. This was the first of many apparitions from the Mother of God. The mission of the apparitions at Fatima was to create devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and for people to make reparation for the sins of mankind and to atone for them.

In 1916, the three children received three visions from St. Michael the Archangel. The first time, he gave them this prayer: “My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.” St. Michael told them to pray in this way to the hearts of Jesus and Mary in supplication for sinners. The third time he appeared to them, St. Michael gave the children their First Holy Communion, and told them: “Eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ terribly outraged by the ingratitude of men. Offer reparation for their sakes and console God.”

In 1917, following the apparitions of St. Michael, the young visionaries were blessed with six appearances from the Blessed Virgin. In her visits, Mary constantly reiterated the need to offer sacrifices in reparation for the sins which so greatly offend her son Jesus. Mary also stressed the importance of the Rosary, and the great power it would have in bringing world peace and an end to World War I. The Blessed Mother promised Jacinta and Francisco that they would be joining her in Heaven soon, and Lucia would too in time, but first needed to reveal her divine message. The Blessed Virgin then showed the children the fires of Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. Mary told them that many souls go to Hell because they have no one to make sacrifices for them, and how greatly this saddens Jesus. She begged them to pray constantly for those in need of God’s mercy. This is the message of Fatima and is even more real for the times we live in today.

In Mary’s final visit with the children she promised a miracle so that all people would believe. October 13th, known as “the day the sun danced,” the sun appeared to be falling from the sky but miraculously did not and dried up the flooded land. Eye witness accounts from believers and non-believers testify to the spectacular phenomena of this miracle. Jesus, Mary, and St. Joseph appeared to the children and the Baby Jesus blessed the world. It was during this final apparition that Our Lady revealed herself under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary. Many conversions and miraculous healings owe their origin to Our Lady of Fatima’s divine intervention in the lives of three little shepherd children.

In 1919, Our Lady kept her promise and took Francisco to Heaven after much physical suffering. A year later, she did the same for Jacinta. In 1946, Lucia entered the Carmelites and spread the message of the Holy Rosary and redemptive suffering for sinners. Lucia worked closely with Saint John Paul the Great to spread the Fatima message. Lucia died in 2005 and is under the title, “Servant of God,” the first step towards Canonization. Jacinta and Francisco were beatified in 2000 by Pope Saint John Paul the Great, and will be Canonized by on May 13, 2017 on the 100th Anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.

Saints to be, Francisco and Jacinta Marto, Pray for us! Servant of God, Lucia Santos, Pray for us! Our Lady of Fatima and the Rosary, Pray for us!!!
