SHW GROUP Presents History Makers SUSAN HAMPTON • Prosper ISD • Folsom Elementary School • Grades K-4 Reading Specialist • 20-Year Teacher • Accomplishments come with rewards. It is time to listen…

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ALAN RICE • Prosper ISD • • Grades 9-12 Business/Marketing/Finance • 2-Year Teacher • You become a teacher because it is your gift; it is your calling. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ASHLEY DUNCAN • Cedar Hill ISD • Cedar Hill Collegiate High School • Grade 10 Chemistry • 7-Year Teacher • My influences have inevitably taught me that I cannot rewind the past or stop the future. The way to figure out this inconsistent maze we call life is to find your purpose, press play, and live life.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers SUSAN HALL • Coppell ISD • Mockingbird Elementary School • Grade 3 • 7-Year Teacher • ‘It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure.’ I know that slogan belongs to the Army, but I believe it perfectly describes my chosen profession. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers CEDRIC JACOBSON • Dallas ISD • H. Grady Spruce High School • Grades 10-11 Chemistry/ Biology • 3-Year Teacher • We are trying to spread the word—my students are developing a science magic show to take to our feeder schools and make science more appealing to younger students. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers TIMOTHY MITCHELL • DeSoto ISD • Cockrell Hill Elementary School • Grade 5 • 3-Year Teacher • A teacher must be relentless. Relentlessness causes a teacher to fight for student success through learning disabilities, ADHD, defiance, low reading levels, physical imperfections, and bad behavior. Success is my goal.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers SHARON SUTTON • DeSoto ISD • West Middle School • Grade 6 Math • 12-Year Teacher • My actions, my words, my persona affect so many. So I think when someone asks me why I am here, I will simply say because it is what brings out the best in me, my students, and, ultimately, the best in my profession.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers JADA GORDON • Duncanville ISD • Smith Elementary School • Grades K-4 Special Education • 12-Year Teacher • I see myself in every student that I serve. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers LaQUITA BRANTLEY • Garland ISD • South • Grades 11-12 Cosmetology • 37-Year Teacher • When I reinforce appropriate student behavior, I find that it is effective in their practices. Students are taught they are expected to behave by the way a teacher organizes and manages their classroom.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ALLISON LOUISE DREWRY • Garland ISD • Nita Pearson Elementary • Grade 3 • 8-Year Teacher • When I was five I wanted to be Wonder Woman. I loved the read, white, and blue uniform. It reminded me of the American flag. The powers Wonder Woman possessed were amazing: the truth lasso, bulletproof bracelets, and a boomerang tiara. Come on! What could be cooler?

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ASHLEY LOGAN • Grand Prairie ISD • Fannin Middle School • Grade 8 English • 3-Year Teacher • I listen as they speak so that I can incorporate their interests and fears into our stories in class. They always want to know what I am reading because I always tell them that I only read good books.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers BETSY BERKEBILE • Grand Prairie ISD • Hector P. Garcia Elementary • Grade 4 • 8-Year Teacher • What the outside world labels ‘at-risk,’ I believe are ‘risk- takers.’ Every day my students take risks. When most students spend their elementary years learning to read and write in one language, my student learn two.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers BETSY BOGDOVITZ • Highland Park ISD • Armstrong Elementary School • Grade 2 • 9-Year Teacher • All teachers have to be life-long learners. I must model what a life-long learner looks like. That is, a teacher who seeks out learning opportunities and professional development. It is important to not just pull out what we did last year. What have we learned in the past year? What does the research tell us?

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers JAY HARRIS • Highland Park ISD • Highland Park High School • Grade 9-12 Marketing/Criminal Justice/Athletic Trainer • 25-Year Teacher • I believe in the power of vulnerability. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ANNE CLARK • Irving ISD • A. S. Johnston Elementary • Grades K-5 Instructional Coach • 11-Year Teacher • I believe students succeed with me because we share our strengths and weaknesses. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers GARY L. SCHEPF • Irving ISD • Jack E. Singley Academy • Grades 9-12 CTE/Business Technology • 34-Year Teacher • I get to bring the world of work to my students by helping them understand how to transfer their classroom career skills into the workplace, while understanding how to be a teen in an adult world. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers MICAH TAYLOR • Lancaster ISD • Lancaster High School • Grades 9-12 English/AP English/ • 3-Year Teacher • Every day I try to teach my students more than just content. My class is a place where my students receive a steady transfer of knowledge about…family, children, cars, bills, love, friendship and everything else that can’t be taught by simply following a list of standards.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KATHRYN FISHER • Richardson ISD • • Grades 9-11 Calculus/AVID • 7-Year Teacher • I believe in modeling for students how they should study and I want to prepare them for college. Our ‘Starbucks Reviews’ have been a natural environment to encourage study groups. Students sit at the tables and help each other and then I am used as a last resource.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ASHLEY RICH • Richardson ISD • Moss Haven Elementary • Grades 5-6 ELA/Social Studies • 6-Year Teacher • How does a teacher quantify the impact that he or she makes on the school, the home environment, and in the lives of others? Enthusiasm, clarity, respect for all, and empathy are the essential qualities that I strive to embody.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers WILLIAM WEED • Rylie Family Faith Academies • Inspired Vision Middle School • Grade 6 Social Studies • 2-Year Teacher • I told my 6th graders not to go home and Google the Holocaust because it might have images that they should not see. The next day, I had students show up and complain about all the things that they learned on the internet about the Holocaust. All they need is the proper motivation to learn.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers LAURA FITZGERALD • Sunnyvale ISD • Sunnyvale Middle School • Grade 8 English • 25-Year Teacher • Along the way, I found out that I was a teacher, enjoying every lesson I was able to impart to my students. That is my contribution to education—the students that felt unwanted, the kids I have saved from dangerous situations, the talks I’ve helped them have with their parents. Besides, isn’t that what teaching is all about? SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ASHLEY PEREIRA • Universal Academy Charter • Universal Academy • Grades 6-8 Social Studies • 3-Year Teacher • I love getting new ideas from my fellow teachers and helping them out with something that works for me. It is all about the students’ best interest and how we can help them reach their full potential.

UNIVERSAL ACADEMY SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ELIZABETH NIED • Uplift Education • North Hills Preparatory Primary • Grades EC-4 Librarian/Library Skills/Research Skills • 11-Year Teacher • The rewards of teaching are constant. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers ANGELA RUSSELL • Uplift Education • North Hills Preparatory Middle • Grade 6 Math • 12-Year Teacher • Students and families are aware that I will do whatever it takes to ensure full comprehension of the mathematical content. The rewards of teaching to me are observing the confidence in a child’s mathematical ability heighten completely from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers LORI CROUCH • Uplift Education • Peak Preparatory Secondary • Grade 9 Geography • 1.5-Year Teacher • An administrator of mine is fond of saying that ‘Good teaching is good teaching.’ The more individual attention I can give each student and conform to the needs of each one, the better teacher I’ll be.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers SARA SCHLEIMER • Uplift Education • Summit International Primary • Grade 2 • 3-Year Teacher • There is not one day that I do not look forward to gong to work or seeing my students. I’m not a saint. I do have a difficult time waking up in the mornings, but that’s only because I enjoy sleeping. Each day in the classroom is an opportunity to belly laugh, to question, to inspire, and set high standards.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers AUTUMN LAMPHIER • Uplift Education • Summit International Secondary • Grades 9 & 11 English • 2-Year Teacher • Teachers are often called the ‘world changers.’ What we do daily transforms, for better or worse, the students in our classrooms, in our schools, and the very future of humankind.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers TAMMIE DAVIS • Uplift Education • Williams Preparatory Primary • Grade 3 • 18-Year Teacher • Children are the future and deserve an education that helps them relate to the content which they are learning. I believe in educating the whole child, which includes teaching academics, while embracing who he is, and encouraging a positive self image.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers MARIA GUTIERREZ • Uplift Education • Williams Preparatory Secondary • Grade 9 Biology • 2-Year Teacher • I believe the greatest strength that I bring to the teaching profession is a renewed passion and energy. One of my unofficial mentor teachers has often stated that I remind her of the energy and spirit she had early in her career. My energy helps her to renew her own, ultimately benefiting the students.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers OTISHA HICKEY-GILREATH • Winfree Academy Charter District • Winfree Academy Denton • Grades 9-12 Special Education • 5-Year Teacher • Education is the great equalizer in our society. I try to ensure that my teaching style truly reflects my personal belief. I do not accept negative self-talk from them about what they cannot do. We set incremental goals so they can track their own progress. They begin to see that they are capable of so much more than they realized.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers WALT SHACKLETT • Winfree Academy Charter District • Winfree Academy Grapevine • Grades 9-12 Chemistry • 41-Year Teacher • I have found that if ‘baggage’ can be lightened, the student can start to learn. Having taught in a school for at-risk students for the last two years, I have seen the ‘baggage’ lifted…students do learn!

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KAREN COLLINS • Winfree Academy Charter District • Winfree Academy Irving • Grades 9-12 English • 13-Year Teacher • My greatest success story this school year was helping one of our night ELL students to finally pass his ELA TAKS test and graduate. His native country was South America. I spent hours helping this young man get ready to pass his ELA TAKS test and he did pass! Yes, and he also graduated!

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KIMBERLEY KING • Winfree Academy Charter District • Winfree Academy Lewisville • Grades 9-12 Science • 4-Year Teacher • I often try to find areas that my students are interested in and tie science to that area. For example, if a student loves cars, I show them an example of wild NASCAR wrecks and then show them how velocity and momentum are used to improve drivers’ safety.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers MEGAN ENGLAND • Winfree Academy Charter District • Winfree Academy Richardson • Grades 9-12 Social Studies • 2-Year Teacher • I have a job that is hands down the greatest job ever. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers GINA TENNERY • Avalon ISD • Avalon School • Grade Kindergarten • 15-Year Teacher • The rewards that come with teaching are those intangibles that make this profession the best in the world. You know you’ve had an impact when you see a student’s face light up, when they have learned a new idea or concept or simply when they give you a hug and thank you for helping them. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KARIN HODGES • Ennis ISD • Ennis Junior High School • Grades 7-8 Physical Education • 39-Year Teacher • I enjoy watching the kids come into 7th grade as little girls and leave as young ladies. I love the excitement in their eyes when they try something new for the first time and realize that they can be successful.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers CARRIE LOWE • Ennis ISD • Stephen F. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers JODI VASQUEZ • Ferris ISD • Ferris Intermediate School • Grades 4-6 Librarian • 25-Year Teacher • Teaching is a profession that I believe is never truly mastered. Like our students, a superior instructor must continue to be a life-long learner and hone her skills daily in order to improve.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers TONYA COLMAN • Maypearl ISD • Maypearl High School • Grade 9-12 Lego Robotics/ Health Sciences/Yearbook • 16-Year Teacher • Each day I make a difference! SHW GROUP Presents History Makers LIZ SCOTT • Maypearl ISD • Maypearl Middle School • Grade 6 English • 17-Year Teacher • I come to the school environment with an attitude of ‘can do’ each day. Perhaps I see myself as the person who points you to the person who can do something about your problem. Sometimes, I see myself as a shoulder to cry on. Other times, I’m the grip on reality we all need.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers DELORIS HARRIS • Milford ISD • Milford School • Grade 5 • 8-Year Teacher • I believe the teacher must be an inspirational role model. It is amazing to see what students can accomplish when they know and sense that someone believes in them.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers DAPHNE CHAMBLESS • Palmer ISD • Palmer Elementary School • Grade 1 • 14-Year Teacher • I am teacher! I live it, breathe it, and sleep it. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers BRANDEE MORRIS • Red Oak ISD • D. T. Shields Elementary • Grade 4 • 5-Year Teacher • Right now my fourth graders are blogging! How exciting! SHW GROUP Presents History Makers STEPHANIE SMITH • Red Oak ISD • Red Oak High School • Grades 9-12 Special Education • 15-Year Teacher • I was presented with an amazing opportunity to incorporate an innovative approach to reaching special education students in their core classes. The Peer coaching program has truly brought a new hope to special education students and given a purpose to others.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers DANIEL FIELDS • Waxahachie ISD • • Grade 12 English • 11-Year Teacher • I is important to remember why we became teachers in the first place: the kids. There is no telling what type of baggage they are carrying with them, and some of them don’t have anyone to help them with the load. Often times it is enough just to invest a few minutes and listen.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers D’ON HENSLEY • Waxahachie ISD • Shackelford Elementary School • Grade 5 • 34-Year Teacher • I know that all students can learn. Students don’t all learn the same way or at the same speed, but they can all learn. I go to work each day to create this dream school for my students.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KATHRYN ROGERS • Sam Rayburn ISD • • Grades 9-12 English • 2-Year Teacher • My message to teachers across the nation would be to take pride in the teaching profession. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers LAURIE VINEYARD • Sam Rayburn ISD • Sam Rayburn Elementary Grade Pre-Kindergarten • 12-Year Teacher • Even though I have wandered into the teaching field by chance, I have actually loved it and feel it is my calling. I work at a school that has taught me to give. I have learned to care. I may not have grown up wanting to be a teacher but I have grown so much by being a teacher.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers THERESA COOKE • Savoy ISD • Savoy Elementary School • Grades 5-6 • 18-Year Teacher • Sometimes I joke that I must have the label that says, ‘teacher’ on me. I can visit another city far away and kids can readily identify me as a teacher. I was at a water park and a complete stranger (kid) came up to me to ask for assistance. My sister teased me and said that it was my bathing suit with apples that gave me away.

That means that I have not simply the responsibility but the opportunity to teach every kid that passes through the doors of my classroom.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers SUSAN GASKIN • Denison ISD • Golden Rule Elementary • Grades K-5 Reading Specialist • 28-Year Teacher • I believe that keys to success in education are careful planning, patience and perseverance, congeniality, optimism and creativity. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers JACKIE DAWSEY • Howe ISD • Howe Middle School • Grade 7 ELA • 20-Year Teacher • I went to over twelve public schools. SHW GROUP Presents History Makers KENRIC DAVIES • Sherman ISD • Sherman High School • Grades 11 Physics • 2-Year Teacher • Knowledge is not about being shown that something is true, it is about experiencing it for yourself. To learn a science concept, a student must experience it before he can understand it.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers RAMON VAZQUEZ • Sherman ISD • Henry Sory Elementary School • Grade 1 Bilingual • 15-Year Teacher • When we guide students to apply their learning, we are preparing them to be problem solvers. We process people, not knowledge. Most of our students will probably have careers that have not been invented yet. If they know how to apply knowledge in different contexts, they will be able to thrive in that world of the future.

SHW GROUP Presents History Makers JULIE CUMMINGS • Tom Bean ISD • Tom Bean Middle School • Grades 6-8 English • 22-Year Teacher • We must make the most of the time we have today to work with children and to impress upon them the hope and belief we have in them.
