2009-2010 Athletic Highlights

Awards  For the second consecutive year, Bethel Park High School received the WPIAL Sportsmanship Award, this time for good sportsmanship displayed during the 2008-2009 school year. The award was presented on Friday, November 27 at during the WPIAL Football Championships.  Adam Lazenga was named the 2009-2010 Male High School Athlete of the Year by the Tribune Review.  Matt Bliss (football/track) and Adam Lazenga (football/wrestling) were nominated as Male Finalists for The Almanac’s Premiere Performers Award.

Boys Soccer  Qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs and advanced to the Semifinals.  Chris Paglia was named All-State by the Soccer Coaches Association.  Chris Paglia and Rob Heuler were named All-WPIAL.  Chris Paglia, Adam Gruntz, Rob Heuler and Mark Riley were named PSCA All-Section First Team.  Brendon Didiano was named PSCA All-Section Honorable Mention.  Chris Paglia, Robert Hueler, Mark Riley and Adam Gruntz were named to the Section 4 All- Star Team.  Chris Paglia and Rob Heuler were named to the Post Gazette South Boys Soccer All Star Team.  Chris Paglia was named to the Tribune Review’s and the Post Gazette’s 2009 Boys Soccer All- Star Team.  Chris Paglia was named to The Almanac’s Elite Eleven All-Star Team. Rob Heuler, Adam Gruntz and Mark Riley were named Honorable Mentions and Ryan Thorsen was named the Rookie of the Year.  Coach Mike Galietta picked up his 100th career coaching victory on October 8 with a win against Albert Gallatin.  Senior Chris Paglia and junior Rob Heuler were named “Players to Watch” by the Post Gazette.  Senior Chris Paglia was named a “Player to Watch” by the Tribune Review.  Chris Paglia will play soccer at Carnegie Mellon University.

Football  The Team won the Section Championship for the second consecutive year and advanced to the WPIAL Semifinals.  Matt Bliss, Adam Lazenga and Corey Spegal were selected to play on the West Squad in the 10th annual Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association’s East-West All-Star Football Game in Altoona.  Anthony Herko, Jared Pratt, Luke Olson and Boo Baroffio played for the North Team in the North/South All-Star Football Game.  Adam Lazenga was named to the AAAA All-State All-Star First Team and Bre Ford was named All-State, Second Team.  Bre Ford and Adam Lazenga were named to the Post Gazette’s Fabulous 22 Squad.  Matt Bliss, Bre Ford and Adam Lazenga were named to the Post Gazette South’s Fabulous 22 Squad.  Anthony Herko, Adam Lazenga, Bre Ford, Corey Spegal, Jared Pratt, Nick Kwiatkoski, Matt Bliss and Mike Vargo were named to the Great Southern Conference All-Star Team.  Matt Bliss, Bre Ford and Adam Lazenga were named to the 2009 All-Playbook Football First Team.  Bre Ford, Corey Spegal, Jared Pratt, Matt Bliss and Nick Kwiatkoski were named to The Almanac’s Football All-Star Team. Adam Lazenga was named Most Valuable Player. Anthony Herko, Mike Vardo, Creighton Hottel, Alex Baroffio and Luke Olson were named Honorable Mentions.  Adam Lazenga was named KDKA-TV’s Extra Effort Athlete of the Week on December 3.  Alex Baroffio and Matt Bliss will play football at and Jefferson College.  Anthony Herko will play football at Lock Haven University.  Adam Lazenga will play football at the University of .  Jared Pratt will play football at Colgate University.  Corey Spegal will play football at Mercyhurst College.  Drew Volbers will play football at Case Western Reserve University.

Boys Golf  The Team qualified for the WPIAL Championships and finished in Fifth Place.  David Ross and Chris Bowen advanced to the WPIAL Golf Individual Championships by each shooting a 75 in the Semifinals.  David Ross and Chris Bowen qualified for the PIAA Western Regional Individual Golf Championships by scoring among the top 24 golfers at the WPIAL Championships.  Chris Bowen qualified to compete in the PIAA Golf Championships, where he finished in 21st place, seven shots off the lead.  Christopher Bowen will golf at Point Park University.

Girls Tennis  The Team advanced to the Quarterfinals of the WPIAL Team Championships.  Abby McCormick and Carly Schoenstein were Runners-Up in the Section 5 Doubles Championship and qualified for the WPIAL Doubles Championship. Samantha Bruggeman and Chelsea Jones played in the Consolation Match at the Section Championships.  Junior Carly Schoenstein finished in Third Place at the WPIAL Section Singles Championship and advanced to the WPIAL Championships.

Boys Tennis  Section Champions for the first time in school history!  WPIAL Quarterfinalists.  Dante Rebelo and Collin Bandell qualified for the WPIAL Singles and Doubles Championships.  Dante Rebelo and Collin Bandell qualified for the Section 5 Singles and Doubles Tournament.

Girls Golf  The Team qualified for the WPIAL Team Championships and finished in Sixth Place.  Liz Creighton qualified to compete in the WPIAL Golf Championships.  Kristen Sauter will play golf at Youngstown State University.  Liz Creighton will play golf at the University of Hartford.

Girls Soccer  Section Champions for the first time in school history.  Qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs.  Brittany Boss and Colleen Poploski were named All-WPIAL.  Brittany Boss, Colleen Poploski, Katie Kelly, Maria Serafini, Claire LoPresti and Maria Touloumes were named to the All-Section Team.  Brittany Boss was named to the Post Gazette’s Girls Soccer All-Star Team.  Brittany Boss was named to the Post Gazette South Girls Soccer All-Star Team.  Brittany Boss and Colleen Poploski were named to The Almanac’s Elite Eleven Soccer All-Star Team. Claire LoPresti, Katie Kelly and Clarissa Bock were named Honorable Mentions.  Senior Brittany Boss was named a “Player to Watch” by the Post Gazette.  Brittany Boss will play soccer at St. Francis University.  Samantha Gribowicz and Katie Kelly will play soccer at Washington and Jefferson College.  Alyssa Larkin and Colleen Poploski will play soccer at Point Park University.

Girls Cross Country  Hillary Boxheimer finished in 14th Place at the WPIAL Championships and qualified to compete in the PIAA Championships.  The Team finished in Second Place at the Central Catholic Invitational. Hillary Boxheimer finished in Sixth Place and Amanda Ruschel finished in Tenth Place.  Sophomore Hillary Boxheimer finished in Sixth Place at the Red, White and Blue Classic.

Boys Cross Country  Ainesh Ravi qualified to compete in the PIAA Championships.

Girls  Advanced to the First Round of the PIAA Playoffs.  The Team advanced to the WPIAL Semifinals.  Danielle McNabb scored her career 1,000th point in the home game against Mt. Lebanon.  Candace Martino was named to the Section 4 All-Star Team.  Candace Martino was named to the Post Gazette’s Girls Basketball Quad A Fabulous Five Team.  Candace Martino was named to the Post Gazette South’s Girls Basketball Fabulous Five.  Candace Martino was named to The Almanac’s Elite Eleven Girls Basketball All-Star Team and Danielle McNabb was named to the Second Team.  Danielle McNabb was selected to play for the Quad A Team in the Roundball Classic.  The Tribune-Review gave the team a #2 pre-season ranking and named Candace Martino and Danielle McNabb as “Players to Watch.”  The Post-Gazette named Candace Martino and Danielle McNabb as “Players to Watch.”  Head Coach Jonna Burke was inducted into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.  Danielle McNabb will play basketball at the University of Rochester.

Boys Basketball  Steve Starkey and Jordan Westphal were selected to play in the Kenny Durrett All-Star Game.  Jordan Westphal was selected to play for the Quad A Team in the Roundball Classic.  Jordan Westphal will play basketball at Washington and Jefferson College.

Girls Volleyball  The JV Team won the Moon JV Tournament.

Wrestling  Adam Lazenga represented the WPIAL in the 285 weight class against the All-Stars at the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic.  Adam Lazenga finished in Third Place at the State Wrestling Championships. Dylan Mogan and Nick Bonaccorsi finished in Eighth Place.  Adam Lazenga won the 285 weight class at the Southwest Regional Championships and qualified for the State Championships. Also wrestling well at Regionals and advancing to States were Nick Bonaccorsi (Second at 160) and Dylan Mogan (Third at 125).  Dylan Mogan, Nick Bonaccorsi and Adam Lazenga won the Section 4 Championship in their weight classes. Phil Kail finished in second place. Rob Heuler, Martin Sams and Ben Nolan finished in third place. Nick Sabol finished in fourth. All of these wrestlers qualified to compete in the WPIAL Individual Championships.  The Team won the Consolation Match at the Section Championships.  Adam Lazenga was named to the Tribune-Review’s High School Wrestling All-Star Team.  Dylan Mogan, Phil Kail, Nick Bonaccorsi and Adam Lazenga were named to The Almanac’s Wrestling All-Star Team. Rob Heuler and Martin Sams were named Honorable Mentions.  The Team finished in Sixth Place at the Allegheny County Wrestling Tournament. Adam Lazenga won his weight class and Phil Kail finished in second. Rob Heuler was third and Nick Bonaccorsi was fourth.  The Team finished in Third Place at the Eastern Area Tournament. Adam Lazenga, Dylan Mogan and Nick Bonaccorsi were winners; Phil Kail finished in second; Martin Sams finished in third and Aaron Plopi finished in fourth.  Adam Lazenga was named the Post-Gazette Male High School Athlete of the Week on January 22.  Adam Lazenga was named WTAE-TV’s Athlete of the Week on January 28.

Girls Swimming  The Team finished in Third Place at the WPIAL Championships.  Leslee Keibler finished in Second at the WPIAL Championships in the 200 Freestyle and qualified for the State Swimming Championships as did Sara Lewandowski, Third in the 100 Freestyle; Emily Eiben, Fifth in the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke; Sarah Aronson in the 500 Freestyle; the 400 Meter Freestyle Relay Team, who finished in Third Place and the 200 Meter Medley Relay Team, who finished in Seventh Place.  At the WPIAL Championships, Sara Lewandowski finished in Fourth Place in the 50 Freestyle; Leslee Keibler finished in Fourth Place in the 500 Freestyle; and Sarah Aronson finished in Eighth Place in the 100 Butterfly.  Sarah Lewandowski, Leslee Keibler, Carianna Doyle, Erica Brado, Margo Drischler, Sarah Aronson, Mary Jo Bailey, Samantha Lynn, Shannon Zimmerman, Tessa Salicce, Emily Eiben, Mallory Mutschler, Taylor Mutschler and Aubrey Harkness qualified for the WPIAL Swimming Championships.  Carianna Doyle will swim at Ashland University.  Alyssa Hoffman will swim at Westminster College  Sara Lewandowski will swim at Drexel University.  Leslee Keibler and Sara Lewandowski were named The Almanac’s Swimming MVPs at the Premiere Performers Banquet.

Boys Swimming  Erik Brinkhoff finished in Third Place at the WPIAL Championships in the 50 Freestyle and qualified for the State Swimming Championships. He also finished Eighth in the 100 Backstroke.  Sam Harkness, Sean Hensler, David Thieshen, Thomas Bailey, Michael Scarpaci, Erik Brinkhoff, Dan Litwin, Dan Snyder and Zach Misak qualified for the WPIAL Swimming Championships.  Josh Sebrosky will swim at Penn State Behrend.

Girls Lacrosse  WPIAL Quarterfinalist  Lindsey Gelles will play lacrosse at Utica College.  Lara McMahon will play lacrosse at Kenyon College.  Anna Zigmond will play lacrosse at Slippery Rock University.

Boys Lacrosse  Taylor Hayes will play lacrosse at Thiel College.  Jonathan Macurak will play lacrosse at Seton Hill University  John Maloney will play lacrosse at Washington and Jefferson College.

Softball  Caitlin Brust was named All-Section.  Julie Kolodziej, Carly Schoenstein and Caitlin Brust were named to The Almanac’s Diamond Dozen Honorable Mention list.  Caitlin Brust will play softball at Franklin and Marshall University.  Karen Powers will play softball at the College of Charleston.  Paula Valdisera will play softball at Washington and Jefferson College.

Indoor Track  The Boys and Girls Indoor Track and Field Teams qualified for the TSTCA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Hillary Boxheimer, Amanda Ruschel, Kelsey Metheny and Hannah Saternos finished in Ninth Place in the 4x800 Meter Relay. Margaux Krahe finished in Ninth Place in Shot Put. Alex Wright, Anna Carnegie, Julie Kolodziej and Stevie Reilly broke a school record in the 4x200 Meter Relay, as did Shakeil Carter in the 200 Meter Dash.  Kelsey Metheny, Hannah Saternos, Maria Touloumes and Amanda Ruschel won the 3200 Relay at the TSTCA Championships.  Stevie Reilly, Anna Carnegie, Alexandra Wright, Julie Kolodziej, Shayla Gerity, Haley Schuetz, Hannah Saternos, Kelsey Metheny, Amanda Ruschel, Maria Touloumes, Hillary Boxheimer, Angela Baroffio, Margaux Krahe, Shakeil Carter and Ryan Sheatsley qualified for the Indoor State Track Championships.  Anna Carnegie, Julie Kolodziej, Hannah Saternos, Stevie Reilly, Kelsey Metheny, Audrey Miller Maria Touloumes, Ryan Sheatsley and Ainesh Ravi qualified for the Tri-State Indoor Track Championships.

Girls Track  Finished the season undefeated and won the Section Championship for the first time since 1999.  Qualified for the WPIAL Track and Field Championships.  The Girls 3200 meter relay team (Hillary Boxheimer, Amanda Ruschel, Maria Touloumes and Kelsey Metheny) finished in Third Place at the WPIAL Championships and qualified for States.  The Girls 400 meter relay team (Julie Kolodziej, Alexandra Wright, Stephanie Reilly and Anna Carnegie) finished in Fifth Place at the WPIAL Championships and qualified for States.  Hillary Boxheimer finished in Fifth Place in the 1600 meters at the WPIAL Championships.  Margaux Krahe finished in Sixth Place in the shot put at the WPIAL Championships.  Alexandra Hay finished in Eighth Place in the discus at the WPIAL Championships.  Finished in Second Place at the Pine Richland Invitational. The Girls 3200 meter relay team (Hillary Boxheimer, Kelsey Metheny, Amanda Ruschel and Hannah Saternos) set a new meet record.  Samantha Bruggeman will run track at Slippery Rock University.  Hannah Saternos will run track at the University of Toledo.

Boys Track  Shakeil Carter finished in Third Place in the 200 meters at the WPIAL Championships and qualified for States.  Shakeil Carter finished in Fifth Place in the 100 meters at the WPIAL Championships.  Shakeil Carter (100 meters and 200 meters), Nick Kwiatkoski (long jump); Bre Ford, Ryan Sheatsley, Shakeil Carter and Nick Kwiatkoski (400 meter relay) – Section Champions.  Shakeil Carter won the 100 and 200 meters at the Pine Richland Invitational and was named MVP.  Ainesh Ravi will run track at the University of Pennsylvania.  Taylor Walter will run track and cross country at Westminster College.  Erik Bonn will run track and cross country at Duquesne University.

Baseball  Anthony Girdano was named to the Section 3 All-Star Team.  Anthony Girdano was named to the Post Gazette South’s Baseball All Star Team.  Anthony Girdano was selected to play for the Quad A Team in the WPIAL Coaches Association’s All Star Game.  The Almanac named Anthony Girdano to its Baseball Diamond Dozen All-Star Team. David Pyles and Mike Lynn were named Honorable Mentions, and Ben Nolan was named a Player to Watch.  Anthony Girdano will play baseball at Muskingum College.  Anthony Girdano received the Edward Strall Scholarship.

Boys Volleyball  Jordan Westphal was named to the All-WPIAL Third Team All-Stars.  Greg Murrer and Jordan Westphal were named to the All-Section First Team.

Ice Hockey  The Team advanced to the Penguin Cup Quarterfinals.  Aaron Placke was named the February High School Hockey Player of the Month by the and honored during a Pens game.  Ken Loeffler, Aaron Placke and Tyler Shipley played in the PIHL All-Star Game.

Cheerleading  The JV Squad earned First Place and was named JV State Champions at the Pennsylvania Cheerleading and Dance State Championships. The squad also was named Grand Champions in the Junior High/JV Category.  The JV Squad earned an invitation to the 2010 National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, FL.  The JV Squad earned First Place at Charleroi’s Rally in the Valley. Kelsi Baxter earned First Place in the Varsity Jump Off event and Emily Swogger earned Third Place in the Varsity Tumble Off event.  The Varsity Squad earned a Second Place in the Home Pom and Xtreme Routine competitions and a Fifth Place in the Cheer competition at the UCA Camp at Slippery Rock. Kara Berestecky and Dee Weinheimer were named All-American Cheerleaders.  The JV Squad earned a First Place in the Home Pom and Xtreme Routine competitions at the UCA Camp at Slippery Rock. Audrey Moad was named an All-American Cheerleader.  The Freshman Squad earned a First Place in the Home Pom and Xtreme Routine competitions and a Second Place in the Cheer competition at the UCA Camp at Slippery Rock. Holly Brueggman and Michelle Spang were named All-American Cheerleaders.  Candace Corcoran will cheer at Slippery Rock University.  Jess Lindberg was named to the Dance Team at Clarion University.

Rifle  At the WPIAL Individual Championships, Jana Koch finished in 13th Place; Autumn Held finished 15th; Luke Robinson, 32nd and Grace Moody, 35th.

In-Line Hockey  The Varsity 2AAA Team won the PIRHL Championships.  The Varsity 2AA Team advanced to the Finals.  The JV2 Team qualified for the playoffs.  The Middle School 2AAA Team qualified for the playoffs.  The Elementary Team qualified for the playoffs.  Nick Barone and Andrew Topka were named to the Varsity 2AAA All-Star Team.  Jacob Glotzbach, Evan Niedermeyer and Joe Schmitt were named to the Varsity 2AA All-Star Team.  Ethan Rupprecht, David Lee and Ian Cooney were named to the JV All-Star Team.  Jake Salak, Matt Westphal and Jonathan Drozd were named to the Middle School All-Star Team.  Coach Dan Glotzbach was named to the Varsity 2AA All-Star Team.
